		<description>Beneath the Surface
Jupiter, Lightning and Invisible Lights @ Pasadena Museum Of California Art
Video shot and edited by Jeremy Eichenbaum
*uploaded by NASAJuno on Jan 20, 2012

Dan Goods, Visual Strategist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, created this installation which consists of a large cloud that hides infrared lights. Infrared light is invisible to the naked eye, but is visible to many cell phone cameras. Just as the Juno mission uses special detectors to peer through the clouds of Jupiter and reveal the depths of its storms, you can "see" lightning storms underneath this dynamic surface.

The cloud is created using regular tap water which is turned into a very dry mist by ultrasonic misters. The tiny ceramic discs vibrate so fast that they vaporize that water. Small computer controlled fans blow the fog around the room. In addition, computer-controlled infrared security camera lights are synched to the sounds of thunder and lightning.

Find out more about Juno at http://missionjuno.swri.edu and http://www.nasa.gov/juno.
Beneath the Surface will travel to museums around the country.

Special thanks to Justin Gier (technology development), Jeremy Eichenbaum (video and editing), and Trenton McElhinney (music).

The Mini Mangler is a real time video controller for signal interference. This repurposed video enhancer allows a user to switch on and off interference, as well as use a knob in conjunction with a kill switch to dial in precise glitches. This proto-demo video demonstrates not only the Mini Mangler's ability to create mega fun, but its capability of transporting a user into the the realm of screen and in-between.

		<description>Non-Road-Roads
From the road often travelled.

The physical infrastructure of travel provides departure points not only to different destinations, but to liminal spaces and non places. Roads, freeways, bridges, and other features of the built environment allow for travelers to move through space while mentally navigating elsewhere. When I’m driving, I typically tune out the passing environment, navigate in a mental auto pilot type mode, and allow my motor skills to guide me while I think about other things.

The freeway system in Los Angeles enable this type of departure. It is a communal transitional space. The individual lanes provide potential for temporary neighboring and momentary alignment of travel. Despite travelers arrival and departure times our sequential movement unifies us temporarily until we break and redirect our direction.

<description>.gif It Up! // Gifting the Gift of .gif
Collaborative project with Tanner Teale and Katie Miyakie

We enjoyed the trajectory of our system of .gif very much. Not because of its natural ability to facilitate interaction with a live photo and video set up, but because we were able to have our system evolve into a conceptually sound piece. It started out with an ip cam at my desk and the toggling back and fourth between the two most recent images captured by the camera to make live .gifs and ended up with us exploring ideas of how people can share ideas to create a collective consciousness.

From a technical stand point I was interested in how our system evolved and utilized photography and video through a designed provocation. This created an interesting photo/video language that questioned the role of audience and practitioner. Starting by toggling back and fourth between images we developed an engaging process where the computer was assigned an active role to unify user's collective decisions.

What are the benefits to having a human control a system and what are the benefits of surrendering control to a computer? What are the disadvantages and what gets lost when the computer takes over? By using a processing sketch we were able to achieve what we set out for conceptually, but by losing the human aspect the user's interactions changed and became more controlled.

This is a project I would like to take further by using the affordance of the processing sketch, but also figure out how to reincorporate the human aspect. Overall, I am satisfied with the way this project evolved and progressed because how we developed a specific language for it, a unique piece of software to control the systems environment, and the interesting use of photography and video used simultaneously to create a new mode of .giffing.

Open Source .gif platform
tannerteale.com/gesturalidentityfinder/

We designed our system to live online as an open source project. Some of our hope which we didn't really follow up on were to see how the internet community would respond to our giffing system once it was back online.

		<description>Cult of the Conundrums
Abstract associations and our narrative assumptions

The abstract symbols we associate with have potential to reveal great deals about our psychological makeup. What if people were categorized not by race, sex, religion, or financial standing, but on their attraction to abstractions?!

The Cult of Conundrums is an organization of freethinkers that identify not with conformity, but absurdity. We set out to question the way things are and re-categorize them in ways they can and might be. Currently we are looking for those who believe in freewill and freedom of thought. Is the Cult of Conundrums right for you?

Our scripted text contains an .xml file which consists of a hierarchical structure of the relationships, metaphysical associations, and characteristics of the original members. A .csv that breaks down members characteristics and properties. A symbol transcriber and a collection of prophecies that have come to past.

The mind maze is the only true rite of passage. In this controlled environment of simulacra you must find your way to the one true end in order to distinguish your own line of life. This is the final stage to becoming a true believer. Transcend the maze and...

The symbols of the conundrums also stands as an abstraction for language. When translated through this processing sketch the could be histories of individual members are revealed.

		<description>Photo Automaton
A useless photo network

Photography studios are networked environments that allow for control and flexibility while photographing an array of subject matter. With time released capture, scripted audible responses, and different modes of visual sensing such as smile and motion detection, the relationship between photographer, studio, and subject is changing. Photo Automaton is a studio that inverts these relationships in order to investigate what an over-programmed photo system would be like and how it would affect behavior in a headshot/portrait context.  By trying to script how people behave in such a space, I was interested in seeing what would emerge by interfering with photographer’s instinctual behavior and letting the system determine the image.

In order to develop this overly programmed system, I designed the Photo Automaton to be used for multiple ways of capturing images without the photographer’s sensibility and skill sets. The stool reacts to pressure when seated on in order to capture an image. With an accelerometer attached to the photographer's wrist the raising and lowering of his/her hand, indicates the light pattern, as well as triggering the shutter release. If one’s hand is in proper photo taking position it will trigger another image to be taken. Audible responses are triggered when shutter is released and the photographer’s hand is lowered.

With this project I was trying to understand how technology and networked systems are part of a physical and spatial interface for image making. As a photographer, my relationship to subject is mediated by the equipment I’m using, but with Photo Automaton the relationship is altered and instead of the photographer controlling the equipment, the equipment controls itself. As a result the photographer has to react to the system.

This model was an experimental design with strengths and weaknesses. My intention was to question the role of automated photography. It is difficult to tell what the system was doing as a whole, because the actions and prompts were inconclusive. If I were to revisit this project again in the future I would define the role of the system more clearly and see how the mediating factor of an actual photographer could work within these parameters.
