		<description>An installation developed using user-centred methods for a new fine-art high school in Malmö, Sweden.

From a broad brief to "visualize and emphasize that new things are happening with the development of New Malmö Latin School", the installation was developed in collaboration with the target group, to arrive at a set of visually abstract forms that follow visitors, inquisitive and welcoming, providing a moment of surprise and enjoyment at the entrance of the information centre for the new school. To prototype and produce the installation we used Arduino and Processing, and created the physical constructions using Illustrator and a laser cutter.

The initial development of ideas was collaborative, as was the building of prototypes and the creation of the initial computer vision application. I was responsable for the construction of the final result.

Developed and produced with Clara Leivas

Images from the final result. Renovations are underway in the building, hence the unfinished wall.

This video shows the preliminary behaviour of the final installation. This behaviour and appearance are based on observations made in previous iterations.
When the final code is completed, the heads will turn to face each other when the visitor is still, or has left the room. In this video, there is a placeholder for that behaviour, where the heads turn straight ahead, looking forwards.

Design Process

We met with Nya Malmo Latin School to identify their goals. We observed our target group, interviewed relevant authorities, and began generating ideas. For the purposes of our thesis, we focused on using proximity as input, and motion as feedback.

We then realized some of these ideas in prototypes, investigating how the target group reacted in relation to different types of servo-based motion.

The second prototype took parts of the most liked prototypes and refined them. With three interchangeable heads we could test the effect of the visual appearance. It also tested the technical aspects of the installation, namely our Processing based computer vision tracking solution.

		<description>Plant Project is an installation comprised of a rectangle of plants inhabited by a virtual entity.

Closely arranged, the plants create a dense grid of foliage. To each plant is attached an eccentric rotating mass motor, connected in a matrix to a microcontroller based control circuit, making the movement of each plant individually addressable.

An application employing computer vision allows viewers to interact with this virtual entity, which reacts to viewers movement and proximity by travelling away from their position. The location of this virtual entity, when in motion, is displayed as motion in the rectangle of plants.

Approaching the plants, the viewer triggers trails of motion travelling away from their location. Additional movement in close proximity to the plants triggers further sequences of motion, as if the grid were full of life.

Plant Project is an experiment in embodying an algorithm, giving it a physicality that can only exist in the mind of the viewer. An investigation in stimulating imagination, in creating a canvas onto which one's associations and assumptions of nature can be projected.

		<description>A project created at FABRICA during Aaron Siegel's three day workshop "Making visible the invisible: data in art and design".

The concept was to visualize how much we move while sitting at a desk. Inspired by recent reports on the the dangers of sedentary life, we wanted to see just how little we move while doing computer-based work.
We used a Processing sketch running frame differencing, capture the results every 10 seconds for 30 minutes per subject. These images were then combined in Photoshop to produce a complete record of all motion the subject created during that time period.

The final images document various types of desk-based work.

This project was initated as a collaboration with Jamin Pirna (sound) and Ofelia Jarl Ortega (dance).
Inspired by the Marginalia project. Some performances have used a modified version of James Georges's ofxSlitScan
The project has been performed at
Soiree Contact (Montreal)
Inkonst with sound artist James Brewster (Sweden)
Skåneskonstförening (Sweden)

		<description>Final work for a course in Light Installation. I wanted to play with the restrictive qualities of light, while retaining a playful element.
The viewer is tracked by an IR camera; the IR lamps show on the video, yet cast light invisible to the human eye. Image processing is done through Processing , which then sends DMX signals to the lamps through a DMX shield on an Arduino.

		<description>Whailing is a voice controlled where the player guides a lost whale through the ocean, eating swedish treats and avoiding enemies.
The concept was was developed collaboratively. My main role in production my role was programming, as well as playtesting. Made with Clara Leivas, Jamin Pirna, Pontus Persson, Valentina Walli, Rebecca Abel Green.

Design Process

The idea grew out of multiple brainstorming sessions where we talked about long distance whale communication and recounted stories of the worlds loneliest whale.

The project brief included the criteria that the game should use a novel form of interaction (ie no mouse, joystick, etc), and we felt voice was an area that would be both fun and challenging.

In the first playtest, users sang into a microphone, which processed their voice with underwater sound effects. The 'game engine' (Clara) would listen to their pitch and move the whale accordingly.
If the whale crashed into an obstacle, it would fall off the board, giving clear feedback to the user. This setup allowed us to test a wide variety of gameplay ideas and scenarios.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/61984/1151460/image01.png" width="670" height="375" width_o="1238" height_o="694" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/61984/1151460/image01_o.png" data-mid="9482066"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Testing a smaller field of view
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/61984/1151460/image00.png" width="670" height="363" width_o="1248" height_o="678" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/61984/1151460/image00_o.png" data-mid="9482053"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

In the second interation we built a digital prototype, which allowed us to further test the game dynamics, obstacle size, and voice control code.
