Curator, Art Director (November 2011)

Material Arrangement is an exhibition and publication as part of the Goethe Satellite Vancouver @ 221A Artist Run Centre, presented in collaboration with OCW Magazine, Mindpirates, and Revised Projects.

Curated in partnership with Tracy Stefanucci.

"But to fully recuperate design from its second-class status under the thumb of content you must take another step. You must say that treatment is a kind of text itself, equal to, and as complex and referential as, traditional forms of content. The materiality of a designer’s method is his or her content and through those material/visual moves, a designer speaks." – Michael Rock,

Project Space is a book shop, publisher, programming space, and studio. As the possibilities inherent to digital space become increasingly infinite, the roles of physical and print spaces are being redefined. Project Space examines, challenges, and supports this redefinition process through a curated selection of publications, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and readings.

Full page photo and text in
Vancouver Review, Winter 2010/2011:

“Of all the things we may miss with the disappearance of the printed page as it yields to the Kindle, e-book or whatever electronic model the publishing world finally settles on, surely the custom bookmark has received little mention. Once found in fistfuls at bookstore counters over the last century, the bookmark now seems to exist mostly as a collector’s item or fetish object. In fact, last fall OCW Magazine had a show of custom bookmarks that, at the end of the day, served as art pieces, not unlike the trend some years back for people to frame their favourite vinyl record covers after CDs seemingly did the format in. But let’s remember what happened to vinyl records in recent years, and trust in the universe unfolding as it should.”</description>

Excerpt from Counterparts’ curatorial vision:

“The ‘counterparts’ theme was inspired by our choice to abandon a one-format-fits-all approach and publish the visual artwork and the literary work in separate booklets. This allowed us more influence on the ways in which readers would experience each discipline, as written and visual work privilege different types of interaction — reading versus looking.

The 8” x 10” booklet asserts the magazine as an object of art. The inner pages are printed on multi-coloured paper stocks, drawing attention to the paper itself. The page does not function simply to deliver the content, but instead becomes part of what is being viewed (the artwork) and actively shapes the viewers’ experience of looking. These colour pages were randomly pre-sorted by hand before printing, discarding the possibility of a “mistake” in favour of chance placement and the potential to discover a new interpretation of each work. This randomization allows each issue to facilitate a different experience of the artwork, which was chosen based on both artistic merit and the ability to withstand the intensity and vibrancy of this treatment.

The 5” x 8” booklet features the winners of OCW True Fiction Contest (Chris Urquhart and Will Johnson), as well as work by Adrick Brock, Anna Maxymiw, Jason Sunder, Leah Rae, and Paul Lionel Kitz. The design promotes engagement and ease of reading, using a small booklet format that lends itself to easier handling and portability, and simple typography and white space that invites the reader into an immersive experience.”
