Isn't it weird how certain dates align? We haven't been allowed back here in eleven years. She would've been seventeen, finishing Lycée. I always wonder what she would've gone on to do, what her passions would've been. My best guess would've been ornithologist, but how many of those are around? I remember she always used to draw that one bird, over and over. The same pose, same size, same expression. The only thing that changed were the locations. Do you remember what it was called? Umm, penguin, right? No, that's not it, but it definitely started with a "P." Oh, peacock! Right, the colorful one that barely flies. Yeah, definitely ornithology. She would've kept it alive. or maybe sculpting. She was completely obsessed with collecting garbage. I remember on her fourth birthday she insisted that we take her and her friends to the municipal landfill. It took us two days to get clearance, but it was totally worth it. I think my favorite memory is when she found that feather sticking out of a wet bag. She was so amazed that it was perfectly dry. Then i told her how they repel water and she immediately spit on it to make sure. Her smile, holding the feather while watching her spit trickle down sitting in this enormous pile of garbage; I never would've guessed that's how we'd spend her birthday, but she loved it. You're right, she always kept us guessing. What about you? She was two and half; started talking not too long before. she would ask questions until she had to stop to swallow and catch her breath, but this one time she caught me by surprise. I had to redirect the grid on the roof and i let her join. She was sitting down in the garden drawing on her arm with mud. She hadn't said anything all morning, so i decided to ask her what her favorite shape is. She said, "Don't be silly. Don't you know everything is a circle?" I hesitated and said, "Well, what about squares? They have corners" and without blinking she goes, "Corners stop things from moving, but everybody knows nothing stops moving. If you look closer, squares are baby circles." A personal project where I designed a poster to illustrate an original short story, "Corners Stop Things From Moving." Today is her birthday.
