CYM3D is an interactive 2D/3D visual environment designed to accompany live audio performance. CYM3D is based on a 3D iteration of CYM: Choose Your Method, and explores the placement and movement of 2D forms in a 3D environment.

CYM3D is fully coded in Processing.

<description>Urban Prototyping is an initiative exploring how participatory design, art, and technology can improve cities. Each UP Festival uses its own strategy to uniquely address that city’s specific circumstances – soliciting, testing, and deploying digital and physical projects with high potential for impact.

UP: San Francisco 2012 was the first UP Festival in the United States, a design and technology festival focusing on replicable digital and physical urban interventions that explore new possibilities in public space. All 23 projects produced were open source, publicly documented, and replicable in any city in the world.

Creative Currency is an initiative bringing together leading developers and designers with national experts in social finance, local currencies, crowdfunding, sharing platforms, and other leaders of the new economy to envision, prototype, and deploy innovative solutions that reimagine our systems of exchange from the ground up.

Focusing on San Francisco’s Mid-Market District, the initiative will answer pressing questions, such as: How can financial data empower low-income residents? How can local currencies support local businesses and community organizations? How can sharing platforms be tailored to fit the needs of under-served communities? How can tools like crowdfunding and microcredit be put to work for social service organizations and individuals alike?

As always, my goal is to do everything possible to combine the benefits of rapid collaborative prototyping with the need for sustainable, impactful, community-driven projects. In this case, the program model (below) emerged as an evolution of our past experience at GAFFTA bringing together the creative community and local community to create digital urban experiments.

The project is a first-of-its-kind partnership between GAFFTA, Hub Bay Area, The San Francisco Mayor's Office of Civic Innovation, and American Express. These partnerships have allowed the project to bridge communities interested in technology, social enterprise, community development, civic issues, and the new economy in an unprecedented way.

		<description>Designer / Cartographer

Mapentines are a series of greeting cards featuring open spatial datasets from cities around the world. I designed the first set for my family and friends for Valentine's Day 2012, including dozens of cardstock cards as well as a large, laser-etched wooden panel featuring the same design. The aim of the project is to showcase the beauty of spatial data itself and connect people with geography in a new context.

The cards are available on Etsy for purchase, and can be given any time of the year.

Hack.d was the inaugural hackathon hosted by the Stanford d.school. The aim was to build creative technical solutions to bring Design Thinking to the World. The event brought together a diverse network of developers, designers, makers, and the broader d.school community to prototype and explore new ways to make the d.school's unparalleled library of teaching content accessible to the world. The weekend represented one of the first times (ever) that an educational institution had completely opened up its website code to be re-imagined by its constituents.

I helped lead the strategic organization of the event, including advising teams throughout the weekend, designing and copywriting event materials, and working closely with d.school leadership to develop the weekend program and path forward to ensure sustainability and impact of projects.

Summer of Smart was a four-month urban innovation initiative designed to explore new ways government and citizens could work directly together to address civic issues.

Coinciding with San Francisco's 2011 mayoral race, the series kicked off with SFOpen11, the first-ever mayoral debate devoted exclusively to technology and open government. Over the following three months, in my role at GAFFTA I led the organization of three civic hackathons around specific topic areas, bringing together subject matter experts from a variety of fields with talented developers and designers to prototype new solutions in under 48 hours. Collectively, the events attracted over 500 attendees, produced 10,000 man-hours of civic engagement, and launched 23 new projects.

The initiative's closing event, a mayoral debate at the Commonwealth Club where the winning teams showcased their work, represented the first time in political history that citizen-sourced ideas were publicly presented to candidates in the course of an election.

I wrote a summary piece on Four Ways Summer of Smart Has Reinvented Civic Hackathons, published by OpenSource.com.

This project was a design for a full-page advertisement in the print edition of Politico supporting the passage of legislation to allow individual citizens to become investors in small businesses through crowdfunding. The ad would have been distributed to Politico's core Washington, DC readership, including thousands of legislative staffers and lobbyists on Capitol Hill. The project was supported by the American Sustainable Business Council and the Sustainable Economies Law Center, among others. Most importantly, the publication of the ad was to be itself crowdfunded by Loudsauce, a platform which enables citizens to join together to purchase print and digital advertising space for social causes.

Unfortuntately, the campaign did not reach its funding goal; fortunately, one month later the legislation in question did indeed pass both houses of Congress, and was signed into law by President Obama on April 5, 2012.

		<description>Collaborating Artist / Cartographer

United States of San Francisco: Together We Are the City was a multimedia exhibit in the three-story Spiral Gallery of the Children's Creativity Museum (formerly Zeum) in San Francisco. The exhibit was the outcome of a months-long exploration process which challenged local teens to create artwork that told a story and answered a real-world problem: How can we strengthen neighborhood connections in San Francisco?

The exhibition demonstrated that while there are differences among each neighborhood, there are also common threads that serve as powerful connections.
Guided by professional artists, designers, and architects, the teens applied design thinking principles including field research, ideation and prototyping to create representations of the distinct neighborhoods in which they reside. After visiting nearly every district in the city - as divided into ten "states" - they produced several series of photographs, collages, iconography, posters, and other reflections on their experiences.

As a Collaborating Artist on the project, I designed a series of large-scale vinyl maps which served to tie the exhibit together and demonstrate the connections across different neighborhoods highlighted by the teens' creative process. I also worked with the youth directly on field trips and workshops, contributed to the creative direction of the exhibit, and assisted with the final installation in the space.

Co-Founder / Information Designer

Occupy Design is an ongoing project aimed at building visual tools to support the Occupy movement. The project has an emphasis on physical infographic signage and iconography, with the idea that clear, well-designed quantitative information is a more effective argumentative and educational tool than simple talking points and slogans seen on traditional protest signage. The project includes an open designer toolkit so that anyone worldwide can create, share, and print designs using a common visual identity.

I brought the idea for the project to a "white-hat" (building useful tools, not doing malicious hacking) hackathon in support of the movement in October 2011. From there I was fortunate to work with an incredible team of collaborators and produce and launch the site and seed designs by the end of the weekend. Within a week, we had several 20 square-foot infographic vinyl banners hanging in Zucotti Park.

The project was featured on GOOD, Mashable, Huffington Post, Grist, and a host of other international media and design outlets, and has received hundreds of international design submissions since launching.

		<description>Artist / Coder / Musician

Tanager is an interactive visual environment exploring movement, color, shape, and depth - named for the bird species of the same name.

I used Tanager to create a music video (below) for my father's birthday in 2011, accompanying an instrumental guitar piece I wrote and recorded for the same occasion. After recording and editing the song, I played the music back and "choreographed" the visuals in real-time, which allowed me to respond to specific components of the music in the visual environment.

Tanager is fully coded in Processing, with some final editing of the below video done in Adobe Premiere Pro. You can play with the project yourself and generate your own visuals below.

Controls:
(1) Decrease speed + size
(2) Reset default speed + size
(3) Increase speed + size
(B) Toggle black/white background
(F) Fixed vs. mouse-controlled
(H) Shape mode: Bird/arc, circle, square, line segment
(M) Run-mode: Linear vs. radial
(N) Fade mode: clear-opaque or opaque-clear
(P) Pause
