FM Global’s Enterprise Learning department built a training facility for our field engineers (and eventually clients) to obtain hands-on experience on machinery and hazards that might be located at a client’s facility (i.e., boilers, fire pumps, sprinkler systems).

The first exhibit is a learning display, where field engineers will be shown different equipment they might see at a client’s facility. This display highlights each lab and serves as a storage unit, that was initially absent in the architecture’s plan. The second is a series of banners meant to inspire those who enter the facility. And lastly, the hexagon wall display with images of the instructor/student training that will be conducted in the labs.

In early 2011, I begin the creative and technical process of building an app, called Risk Essentials for FM Global. The project started with testing different resolution sizes and building templates for these sizes. Then tested adding multimedia content, such as videos, audio, slideshows and connecting web data (such as PDFs and twitter feeds) to an issue of Reason using the Adobe DPS software. Once an issue was approved, the app was uploaded to iTunes for the iPad (testing with mobile and Android is in the initial phase).

Also at this time, we set out to build a Reason magazine web site. Since our dot com cannot be expanded upon in it’s present form, we needed to create a site that reflected the standards of the dot com but would be a searchable database of articles and topics that our clients can always access. We hired an outside agency to build the site on the content manager, Drubile, and based the design on the magazine and my initial sketches. Once built, we worked on taking 5 years worth of content and populating the site.

Download the Risk Essentials app at itunes/risk essentials
View the Reason web site at fmglobalreason.com

We also create plenty of video for Reason which is played on the web and app (with other internal uses). For each video, I create a storyboard of the concept and explain how the visuals might work. A sample of a storyboard is shown above and below. The above storyboard is for "Portraits of Success" and is still in production for issue 2, 2013. This video is stark black and white with cuts of color footage from Superstorm Sandy with the addition of color infographics where script allows.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1174284/P01031_KMR_storyboard-1.jpg" width="670" height="512" width_o="2048" height_o="1566" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1174284/P01031_KMR_storyboard-1_o.jpg" data-mid="5730564"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The above storyboard is for a video introduction for a series about risk improvement. The client wanted something very low-tech, almost homemade. My inspiration was the Bob Dylan/Inxs videos of a person standing in front of the camera flipping through hand-drawn cards with the video title. On the last card, the actual video pops up to the screen.

The video was actually shot before an art director signed-on, so a few modifications were done to enhance the "homemade" aspect. Since the video was shot on green screen, a white board was placed behind the instructor for a classroom-feel and behind the white board is a video of our research campus, so it feels as if the instructor is in the actual facility explaining the piece of equipment to the class. The final video has the hand-written logo in the corner of the white board.

Below are stills from the introduction for the First Person Video Series. The introduction was created with Flash and carries over the brand from the First Person series in Reason Magazine.

		<description>Below is a brochure I conceptualized and design for FM Global's WorldReach capabilities. The brochure needed to be printed in seven different language without breaking the budget as well as convey the five different elements of our WorldReach program to those different countries. The idea then, is to use simple illustrations using our vibrant color palette to grab the readers attention and use all black text so only the black plate on press needed to be replaced for the different language.

This brochure won an In-HOWse design award from HOW Magazine.

		<description>For several years, I was art director of FM Global's annual report before I switched to Reason Magazine. The two annual report below are my favorites.

The first is the 2006 Annual Report which took me to Denmark, Brazil and Michigan, USA, to art directed the photography. The concept behind this year's annual was the expression, "The sum is greater then all its parts", meaning as a mutual company, we are nothing without our clients. We are definitely a team. The shorter pages you see of the full page photos are actually pull-outs, the "team" on one side and the product that we "protect" on the other. This annual won several awards, including In-HOWse design award from HOW Magazine.

Below is the last annual report I art directed and designed for 2009. I was pregnant at the time and was unable to travel to the photo shoots but was able to direct the photographers remotely.

With FM Global’s new LEED certified building in Johnston, RI, came a new project – to design a timeline exhibit for the expansive new lobby. The design team had a few restrictions – the lobby was still under construction and the only visuals were the blueprints and a few pieces of material for reference.

Knowing we were restricted to an area dictated by the architects, we created the idea of pillars and an exhibit within each pillar. We expanded each pillar height and width-wise because of the expansiveness of the lobby. We wanted visitors to walk in lobby and notice the exhibit while still preserving the open space of the lobby the architects had created. We used a muted pallet, using materials from the lobby, such as the wood, metal and glass. We also tested the readability of the text for people of different heights as well as the view of the artifacts. And lastly, all artifacts needs to be searched for, cataloged and described.

		<description>In 2010, I took over as art director of Reason, our client-facing magazine. The new managing editor and I decided to steer the “news” magazine into a thought-leadership piece with longer features and columns and a mix of conceptual illustrations and custom photography rather then using royalty-free stock.

Below, is just a sample of covers and layouts I have either designed or conceptualized and worked with a freelance designer or illustrator to see the concept through to print.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/sprinklerdisplay_2.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="1854" height_o="1384" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/sprinklerdisplay_2_o.jpg" data-mid="5244496"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

As an in-house design agency for FM Global, our clients are internal, from various departments throughout the company, although our audience or ultimate end-user is frequently external, i.e., the policyholder or general public.. In regards to this particular project, our Research department called on us to create inventive displays for the visitors’ area of our Research Campus, one of the most innovative research and testing centers in the world, to showcase our 175-year history of innovation. The driving force behind the project, which spanned just nine months from concept to installation, was a significant client event taking place at the Campus in celebration of our 175th anniversary. Although we had already created a historic timeline display several years earlier, an addition recently was put on the building and resulted in the need for changes to the display. While existing content could be repurposed, a new design was created, along with an idea for a display case to house 1,000 historic sprinklers from our collection. Several factors had to be addressed for this sprinkler display – first, how to secure each sprinkler, so there is no movement or theft; second, how to create a display that does not need a great amount of attention, i.e., dusting each sprinkler; and lastly, how to display these sprinklers to show the true progression in history of the sprinkler from 1880 to present, cataloging each for a to-be-developed companion brochure.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/full display.jpg" width="599" height="399" width_o="599" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/full display_o.jpg" data-mid="5657101"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/side display.jpg" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/side display_o.jpg" data-mid="5657100"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/sprinklers.jpg" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/sprinklers_o.jpg" data-mid="5657099"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/timeline_6.jpg" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/timeline_6_o.jpg" data-mid="5657097"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/timeline_cu1.jpg" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/timeline_cu1_o.jpg" data-mid="5657096"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/vistorsroom_8.jpg" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/87347/1091880/vistorsroom_8_o.jpg" data-mid="5657092"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Two concepts were created for the historic timeline display and the sprinkler display by the art director and were presented to several tiers of management. Several vendors were interviewed to obtain their perspectives on how to construct exhibits from the designs, especially the idea of “suspending” the 1,000 sprinklers in glass cubes. The final vendor, Orion RED, was chosen because it was the only vendor that could stay true to the designs.

The concept was to create industrial artwork for the expansive (and empty) lobby at the Research Campus. The sprinkler display is the “painting,” with a mosaic glass background and a plexiglass cube system to house each sprinkler. These cubes then were suspended by a custom-built metal grid system with a grip mechanism for each sprinkler, and the entire case was encompassed in glass with a thick wood frame. The historic timeline display is the “sculpture.” It’s “bones” mimic the metal grid system used in the sprinkler display; milestones are highlighted on silk-screened glass cubes and printed photos are suspended on the grid at different levels from the wall. Pops of the same color from the mosaic appear behind the suspended glass for a touch of color.

The last display can be seen in the large visitor's meeting room. A 16' x 50' wall now displays custom photography from each lab at the Research Campus – fire, hydraulic, natural hazards and electrical – as a preview of what visitors can expect on the tour of the facility. Five client quotes hang between the images describing their experience on the tour as well as the four icon signs for each lab that corresponds to a marketing brochure about the Campus.
