		<description>Diploma Project - BizTrack : Software Application for Execs on Handheld Device

Client - Symantec Software India Pvt. Ltd., Pune

This project titled “BizTrack” is about an application on a handheld device (iPad) for senior management executives of a corporate company like Symantec.

A senior executive of a company has multiple roles to play and is one of the busiest employees in the company. He has to handle multiple time zones, hundreds of employees, top customers, media and so on. He is responsible for creating, reviewing, reforming strategies that help grow his business. He is also responsible for the overall health of his business. He has to interact with numerous people. Above all this, he has to distinguish himself from his competitors and have a higher market share.

He is constantly on the move and hence is mobile most of the times. His primary mode of communication is his handheld device - phone/tablet. It is said that he ‘sleeps with his mobile’.

For all this, he gathers the necessary information through frequent interrogation with folks around him. The data is all available, in the system, but in different places, different databases, with people and within his mind. Thus he has to handle data through both sources - system and people. Every time he needs some information he has to ask one of the sub-ordinates to get it for him (There is a delay in getting real time information.). Then he connects the dots inside his head and creates a bigger picture for himself to finally take an informed decision. To help him in this herculean task, this app comes to the rescue. This app helps him by getting it all together, providing him the big, coherent picture. Thus it becomes more efficient decision making for him.

This project is the first of its kind in the company and understanding from ground level was necessary. It was an experiment, more like starting from a blank canvas as there was no specific output in mind.

The project began by user research phase, talking to the users, getting to know their work pattern, daily routine, their concerns and so on.

 After analyzing this data, certain patterns of what concerns them were emerging.

This helped us get our user stories in place which consisted of multiple use cases.

From these use cases, scenarios were identified to create work flows. Then began the conceptual explorations. The primary design concerns while exploring concepts were: time, mobility and criticality. The final concept took care of all three to optimum levels. It was then paper prototyped and detailed. Multiple iterations were made to refine it.

Once we finalized on this, hi-fidelity prototype was made. Constant evaluations were done at each stage.

Bringing Along a Context 

It is noticed that one of the least addressed problems in NID, Gandhinagar campus is that of disconnection among people staying on-campus to the outside world. Isolation from matters outside the frame of one’s boundaries is a threat to a harmonious existence and suppresses exchange of human expression. 
An existing established tool to bring this connection has been the newspaper. But the consumption of newspaper as an information source compared to other mediums such as the internet, television and the radio has been declining drastically over the years. This led us to target the factors affecting lower readership and initiate interactive means of enhancing readership and communal participation regarding societal and worldly issues, leading to creation of social networks where people share and debate over an issue after being sensitized to it through the interaction we designed using the newspaper as a tool.

Making Objects Talk

The main intention is to design interactions with the newspaper which should eventually allow the newspaper to talk to new users through interactions that took place with earlier users. Each individual interaction adds dynamism to the system. This understanding helped confirm a direction towards making objects talk to humans in an indirect cognitive fashion through a model based approach.

Newspaper Stand Design

We initially started off by making a regular single wooden newspaper stand to experiment on how people react to it and since our user’s reactions were positive, we decided to change the newspaper stand into a different model for further experimentation. Their curiosity encouraged us to change the style of newspaper display into a completely open kind. We found that opening the entire newspaper became an intimidating flood of information so we compromised on the number of pages by reducing it to eleven and used magnetic classroom softboards as a base. Although, much more efficient designs were thought of but could not be realised due to lack of material.

Explanation of the Process

We identified motivating and inhibiting factors that affect newspaper reading in general and then picked the most relevant ‘tag words’ that associated with the project’s purpose and listed them separately. We clustered the tags into categories and after several iterations we finally arrived at the following four categories that helped us proceed to the next step.
We made different prototypes by assigning certain target tags from the categories that we identified and while these prototypes were under user testing, we recorded the interactions through a web camera for later analysis. The process was iterative and based on the feedback we received. 

Model-based Approach

The goal in any model-based design approach is to describe system components within a modeling language that does not commit the designer early on either to a specific execution and interaction semantics or to specific implementation choices.
Central to all model-based design is an effective theory of model transformations. Design often involves the use of multiple models that represent different system views at different granularity levels. Usually, design proceeds neither strictly top-down, from the requirements to the implementation, nor strictly bottom-up, by integrating library components, but in a less directed fashion, by iterating model construction, analysis, and transformation. Model transformation must preserve essential properties and although some transformations can be automated for example a self height adjusting newspaper stand; for others, the designer must guide the model construction by understanding the language in which the feedback is being received. The process followed for this project is purely based on this model.

Preset Limitations for the Project

Limitations for the project included not to make the interactions me-centered but to encourage community participation and involvement as a whole. Comparison, competition and distinction between people were strictly not addressed throughout the project since our thoughts aligned to creation of lesser barriers and encourage collective knowledge sharing through this process. This approach opposes the notion of social networking sites on the web.

Testing &#38; Evaluation

In order to arrive at daily conclusions and to raise further questions, we tested each prototype against six keywords as quoted by the author of the book ‘Design of Everyday Things’- Don Norman. They are visibility, affordances, mapping, feedback, constraints and consistency. This method gave way to ask numerous questions that were to be answered at every iteration. We made it a point to address all the questions at every step.

Introduction
This design project is about research methods and ethnography. It was in collaboration with IBM India Research Labs (IRL) under their Open Collaborative Research (OCR) program. Students from the disciplines of New Media Design and Strategic Design Management were grouped into teams of four and sent to various parts of the country for the project’s primary purpose of conducting an ethnographic field study.

Why Ethnography?
Most research is Positivist in nature. However, the Positivist stream of research has its limitations especially when the objective of the research is to understand meanings that human beings actively construct of the world through and in their interaction with it. These meanings and or “truths” influence human behaviour and interaction. A Phenomenological approach and its associated methods could be seen as a more relevant and useful way of discovering and conceptualizing group and or individual meanings which includes a rigorous process of experience, observation, documentation and reflection.

The Research Brief
Studying communication processes for persons of age group 20-45 from rural india with respect to cell phones.

The Location and the Community 
Our team was sent to Amrawati, a city in Maharashtra. We were assigned ‘Newspaper Vendors’ as our focus group to conduct ethnographic research.

The Project Brief
To understand how communication works in the community of Newspaper Vendors and the role of mobile communication in their daily lives.

The Methodology
Long Interviews and Participant Observations were the fundamental instruments used in this research. Each team had two native speakers a.k.a. insiders who could interact with the locals and two outsiders who could give a third-party perspective. I was one of the native speakers. The language of communication was Marathi. Everyday observations were noted in field book in the forms of sketches, descriptions, quotes, scenarios etc.

Long Interviews
The process uses a reference interview guide that is drafted keeping in mind the research brief. An interview is attempted by the local person who represents the community after building a thorough rapport with the community in context. The interviews are recorded into a device and then transcribed. A method of verbal coding is followed at which point, categories of attributes are arrived at with supporting evidence from the transcribed document.

We conducted long interviews of 8 willing respondents. 

Participant Observations
Participant observations are detailed descriptions of the setting being observed. This includes a narrative of the setting, the characters, the front-stage and back-stage activities and the inferences of the researcher.

Our team together collected a total of 47 participant observations by the end of the research project.

This project was done as a part of IIJS Signature, Goa 2010. The brief was to create an interactive and dynamic art installation for the cafeteria space of the exhibition.

The initial idea floated around a concept of engaging the visitors with an interactive table while they were spending some quality time at the cafeteria. So we replaced the coffee tables with four interactive multi-touch tables. One of the tables was designed so that people could view the last year’s exhibition photos and the other three were based on the concept of human-object interaction. The reason for introducing an interactive table at the cafeteria was to provide the guests an experience of the Goan environment with some subtle animations as well as an opportunity for them to mingle with one another.

The table was equipped with multi-user interactive animations which were designed based on the theory of response-stimuli system. It was an intelligent system which was able to distinguish between the natural hand gestures and objects like ipod, mobile phone, coffee cup etc, and thus responded accordingly to generate visually pleasing animations. The theme of the exhibition was celebrating Goa. So taking inspiration from the goan beaches, we choose water ripples as one of the visuals for the table.

The project comprised mainly of three major segments. First was the designing of the interface through which people interact with the table, the second challenge was achieving it technically and finally the design of the form, colour and placement of the table.

The method of FTIR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) was used for running the photo application on one of the tables and the other three tables worked on the principle of Front Diffusion Illumination. For both the tables, CCV (Community Core Vision) received the blob coordinate data from the web cam feed and later, sent to Adobe Flash to generate the graphics via TUIO protocol.

This is a academic design project on experimental animation with the theme of “What does Hinglish look like?”

Experimental animation films do not represent a defined field of production. They are made by professional, semi-professional and non-professional filmmakers for a variety of reasons, most of which originate in their enthusiasm for the medium itself and their desire to develop some technical or artistic aspect of it. This film is created using light as the medium, and explores light painting/painting with light.

Hinglish is pervading, strengthening and emerging as the most comfortable and natural mode of communication amongst the Indian youth. It is a highly dynamic new language and a vibrant hybrid of Hindi and English languages.

There are different patterns seen in the usage of Hinglish, some of which are listed below – 

Hindi in English/Hindilizing English: Indians frequently inject words from Indian languages, in our case - Hindi, into English. Eg. Tomorrow is the “puja” day.

English in Hindi/Anglicizing Hindi: Using English words in Hindi statements. Eg. Apko “check” bhej diya hai.

Indian English: Using the grammar of hindi, Indians literally translate it to English using its grammar. I only told her to do that.

Hinglish songs: Some Bollywood songs also make use of Hinglish lyrics. Eg. “my name is anthony gonsalves main duniya mein akela hoon”
