Many articles were written about the murder, and many TV programmes commented on the topic. Although only one version of this story was reported in the newspaper (limited by Xinhua Publishing House), a few alternate reports have surfaced on the internet, all claiming to tell the ‘truth’. All these things make me wonder: what, exactly, is the truth? I read an online article posted one year after Yao Jiaxin’s death, in which some new information had surfaced. I was inspired by this article to create a story, showing three different views of this dramatic incident. The first one is from news reports which can be found in every mainstream Chinese newspaper. The second one is from an interview by CCTV (China Central Television), which was broadcast after Yao’s death. The third one is a more public view, that of the article I had read which was spread widely online. For the story, I was inspired by Frank Miller and Charles Burns. I purposely made the characterization simplified as I thought the character himself was not that complicated; the story itself was only complicated by the people involved, who brought their own motives and opinions into the story, in turn creating many garbled theories for this one event.
