Traced mono prints on mulberry paper

While we are primarily concerned with recording a hidden heritage, we are also interested in a reinterpretation of art history from our new awareness as women. Once consciousnesses have been raised, we cannot use language in the same way. -- Elsa Honig Fine

		<description>she is to keep silent

#1-4 - ink, velum &#38; water based ink

These drawings depict chairs that are visual representations of the discomfort I felt as an adolescent. Physically, these chairs were too small, too short and made for the right–handed. I was hunched over and twisted with hips pinched and lady–like legs closed. The posture required to contain myself in this chair parallels a defensive state of mind that I developed emotionally to help myself cope.

Psychological studies show that yellow can create feelings of frustration and anger. While it is considered a cheerful color, people are more likely to lose their tempers in yellow rooms. I am interested in creating psychological portraits of spaces that substitute objects, like furniture or communion trays, for figures. These images are often drawn from my personal history, but I use implied motion and distortion to produce the sense that these objects do not function and to generate emotional context.

#5-7 - silkscreen prints

This piece is meant to overwhelm and burden the viewer as the public judges them for participating in or witnessing such a disrespectful act.

<description>Epilogue: a closing speech in a play, often delivered after the completion of the main action

The culmination of my MFA career has resulted in Epilogue, a 36’ long accordion fold book that chronologically documents my experience with religion. The book features black and white images of young women cropped from various religious settings, all wearing varying expressions of disapproval or fear on their faces. Swashes of color are strategically placed to cover their mouths and limit their speech. A mixture of hand-drawn calligraphy and digital type showcases misogynistic biblical texts, personal conversations, and definitions.

<description>I replicate elements of the biblical literature that was part of my childhood religious education and create an environment that suggest the subtle indoctrination made possible by written dogma. I want the viewer to pass through the space only barely sensing the presence of text on the walls. The subtle nature of the texts and its abstractions both highlights its power and subverts it.

		<description>War on Women

**Accepted into the Hearts &#38; Hands Exhibition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln**

In War on Women, I have compiled phrases repeated about women from a variety of sources into book format. The smudged and blurry text continuously visible, even after turning multiple pages, is meant to reference a routine degradation of women and how these damaging opinions are ingrained into our society.

Over thousands of years, men have created and maintained an enclosure of institutionalized oppression to fortify their dominations of women by using many institutions and values as vehicles of oppression, e.g. marriages, family, sexual intercourse, love, religion, prostitution, women are the victims of this oppression. -- Ti-Grace Atkinson

		<description>Subjugation

I create narrative prints that refer to biblical texts and religious dogma. By using repetition and distortion, I recontextualize imagery of women in seemingly harmless situations.

Women’s sanity was saved by bringing these hidden experiences into the open, naming them, and turning our rage into positive action to reduce and heal violence. -- Gloria Steinem

Traced monoprints of female fans at the height of Beatlemania. I am intrigued with the way devotion and fanaticism can also look demonic and terrifying.
