Initially, the blood type tester will require clinical testing, before it can be included in plaster kits and NHS locations. The second phase of development is to include the tester within the UK driving application, with blood type added to the driving license. The third phase of development applies the mechanism of function to other blood tests. Eventually, it is hoped the technology can be used globally for low cost simple blood testing devices.

<img src="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/10/330231/4826397/Needle_roll_905.jpg" width="905" height="484" width_o="2000" height_o="1071" src_o="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/10/330231/4826397/Needle_roll_o.jpg" data-mid="25909825" border="0" align="left"/>
Again, the needle device will require validation through clinical trials. The needle is then developed for an appropriate scale of manufacture, and is included on each blood bag. The final phase investigates whether aspects of the needle could be applied outside the sphere of blood donation.

<img src="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/10/330231/4826397/Trolley_roll_905.jpg" width="905" height="419" width_o="2000" height_o="928" src_o="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/10/330231/4826397/Trolley_roll_o.jpg" data-mid="25909821" border="0" align="left"/>
The first phase of development for the trolley is optimising the trolley for batch manufacture and assembly. Initially, ten pop up units of ten trolleys will be created, for donations in very visible locations. The third phase of development sees all mobile units upgraded to the trolley unit. Finally, the trolley donation unit could be sold as a franchise to international blood services, to improve blood safety globally.

Haemobility re-imagines mobile blood donation and addresses the need for wider participation within our growing and ageing population. Through Haemobility, greater awareness of blood donation, enhanced donor experience and increased safety of Donor Carer tasks are achieved.

A simple and intuitive low-cost testing device, available in first aid kits and sent with official application forms, reveals blood type (1). Haemobility increases the visibility of the blood donation process in daily life with blood stocks shown in visual media (2) and through the dispersal of new hyper-mobile blood donation units (3), each designed to deliver ten donations per day.

The system utilises completely online sign-up (4), while the units allow for donations to take place in diverse locations, while making Donor Carer tasks easier and safer, and enhancing donor experience (5). The new safer needle carrier design is less intimidating and reduces the chance of needlestick injuries for carers (5). Donors are given feedback about their blood destination, validating their donation (6,7).

By delivering an enhanced experience and innovative equipment, Haemobility encourages increased participation within a larger, more diverse pool of lifetime donors.

Needle fear is one of the two main reasons for not donating, while there were 180 needlestick injuries in NHSBT in 2011.

The new needle guard allows the makes the needle look less intimidating to donors, while shielding the needle when not in use. The needleguard is more comfortable on the arm, eliminates rotation of the needle and reduces pain during donation.

The guard has been designed to be used completely one-handed, potentially proposing a new standard in the design of needles. The guard is very tactile and ergonomically fit to the ritual of use. Tactility increases the chance of finding the vein (reducing pain and anxiety for donors); while a cantilever snap lug mechanism ensures only one use, with a safe and secure lock on the needle. The combination of one-handed operation and a locking mechanism reduce the occurrence of needlestick, saving NHSBT costly injury claims.

The new hypermobile blood donation allows donations to take place in a much more diverse range of locations than before.

A mobile unit takes 10 people an hour to set up, while material handling is the highest occurrence of injury in NHSBT. Having experienced mobile units, they are very basic and lack human-centred input for both donors and carers, while being hidden away in church and school halls.

The trolley makes the mobile unit truly mobile once more, eliminating material handling completely. A unit (10 trolleys) can be set-up/taken down in less than ten minutes, allowing more time to be spent on donations during a session. Since the trolley is very mobile, a much larger range of locations can be used, while the process can become much more visible in daily life, again encouraging increased participation.

Germ harbouring/transmission has been minimised through design, while the trolley is completely ambidextrous: allowing donations from either side. The trolley contains all the equipment necessary for 10 donations. In use, adjustable chairs allow an ergonomic fit for donors, while the trolley maintains an acceptable working height for carers. These innovations make donor carers’ job both safer and easier.

The armrest connection has been designed for comfort and to distract donors. Since the unit is hypermobile, it can be seen by the general public in their daily life, further increasing awareness.

A simple and intuitive low cost blood type tester, that reveals ABO blood type.

Awareness of the blood service is crucial to encourage new registered donors. A blood type tester accessed in a range of ways empowers users with blood type, and with knowledge of local supply and demand, participation is encouraged.

Current blood type testers do not clearly indicate blood type, while requiring a complex multi-stage ritual of use.

Our blood type tester clearly indicates written ABO blood type, using micro-printed antigens and a single-stage mechanism, making the device much more intuitive for users to use and interpret their results. The tester could be delivered with official document applications (such as the driving license application), serendipitously in plasters and at NHS contact points.

Once the finger is pricked, squeezing the pipette first moistens the antigen reaction side, and then the pressure difference draws blood to the reaction side. Once revealed, all the blood is retained within the device.

The form has been designed to be ergonomic in the hand and sympathetic to the ritual of use.

Awarded Social Impact Student Notable Prize in Core 77 Awards 2013.

Haemobility is a project showcasing innovations in the future mobile blood donation service in the UK. The project aims to increase participation in blood donation, while revolutionising the mobile blood donation experience for people.

The three main project outcomes are a simple and intuitive blood type tester, a hypermobile blood donation trolley and a new needle device.

The project has been conducted over three months by four postgraduate students from Innovation Design Engineering, a joint Masters between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London.

Throughout the project, the team has conducted extensive primary and secondary research.

We have experienced the whole process, donating blood in both mobile and permanent units, allowing us to gain design insights along the way.

We have also talked to a wide range of stakeholders, including donor carers, first-time and regular donors, NHSBT staff, blood specialists, public health experts and transfusion recipients.

The large body of research conducted has not only proved insightful and informed the project at every stage, but has ensured that the outcome remains human-focussed.
