<description>In my design practice, I like to constantly experiment and re-think my approach. I bring a different visual vocabulary to each project. That's why settling on one color or message for my business cards was not going to work for me.

These mini-cards sport seven different back sides, featuring some fun copy, especially crafted for the project. The so-called "ancient proverbs" express some design truths including: Helvetica is better than chocolate, there can never be too much RAM, and white space makes the heart grow fonder.

These lovely bits of fun were printed by Moo UK on a thick 350gsm, sustainably sourced paper stock, with a smooth matte laminate.

<description>Nothing like a pen and paper (or graphic tablet and design software) to get the creative juices flowing before a new project.

Below are some illustrations I made in my free time using either Adobe Illustrator or Corel Painter. I try not to take too long on these and just experiment as a way of trying new things.

My goal with this project was to make potential students attracted to the program before the parents even had the chance to read the description.

I created this tri-fold brochure and a large banner that was used for community fairs, where the summer program was promoted. My inspiration came from children's toys, which are high in contrast and often use complementary colors.

<description>Macalester College ("Mac"), Saint Paul, MN

This project was born following a weekend retreat with the Men Can Stop Rape organization, arranged by the Macalester College office of student affairs. I wanted to try a positive take on a difficult subject, branding consent as a positive, even trendy, concept (yes, postmodernity is a trend at Mac). Initial funding and support were granted by the Health and Wellness center and the Student Affairs office.

These typographic shirts were handed out to anyone who signed a "dating pledge" during the all-campus student engagement fair. We got 169 signatures (student population: ~1800) and another batch of 200 shirts was later commissioned by a men's student organization. This makes for one t-shirt for every 4.5 students on campus.

I can't attest to changes to people's dating behavior but I sure get excited every time I see a student wearing this shirt! So far, the shirts continue to be a part of campus culture, with another batch arriving in fall 2011.

The shirt made an appearance in this Fall 2011 orientation video, now available on the college's official YouTube channel. See the shirt in action—among other campus t-shirts—at 0:42 seconds in the video below:

For Pangea's annual Alternate Visions Festival, I created two variations of a unique identity. One to promote the festival as a whole, and one to represent its main event.

Programs and posters were designed as mailing collateral, and the posters below appeared in community businesses and other events by Pangea and their collaborators. Finally, I created a spread layout for Pangea's annual program, which mirrored the festival's identity.

The illustrations are by Carolyn Anderson.

When Macalester College's first student-led action fund was born, I was invited to design the fund's identity and promotional materials. I sat down with two tall guys who talked and talked about their grueling fund-raising efforts. My job was to translate over a year of work into one symbol.

The Live It! council wanted something that embodied global citizenship, personal responsibility, big dreams, and sustainability. I came up with a dandelion. The council expected 12-15 grant proposals in their first year and got double the amount.

Each year, Pangea World Theater holds a fund-raising benefit. This time, they were looking for a program that could be used as an annual report and promotional piece after the event. The challenge was to use as much photography as possible, to showcase Pangea's vibrant array of multicultural events and to represent uniqueness while maintaining unity.
