In January 2010, Spain took on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months. Spain was the ‘face and voice‘ of the EU; as part of its Presidency the Spanish Ministry of arts and Culture organised various artistic and cultural events throughout Spain.

For this brief, I was required to design a logotype, tagline, flyer, entryform and poster promoting one of these events; ‘Visión Futura‘ an international photgraphy competition for 3rd level students of the EU member states. An exhibition of selected entries were held in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao for the duration of the Spanish Presidency. My concept is based on construction and the role we play in shaping our own future. I used a ‘Cubist’ style approach to my solution after learning that Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim was inspired by Picasso’s ‘The Accordianist‘. The combination of geometric forms represent how we shape our future. We influence our future by our choices but it is not quite solid or set in stone. The future cannot be avoided, it is inevitable! We are constantly growing and learning because our ideas for the future are forever expanding. What do you see in the future - Build your picture!

Limerick city is constantly being altered and modified. Due to the current economic climate, it may not be changing the way we want it to. Recently, because of the amount of litter in Limerick, the city has recently been dubbed ‘Ireland’s Litter Blackspot’. On a personal note, litter has always annoyed me; not the fact that it exists (that is unavoidable) but the fact that so many people do not bother to take those extra few minutes to put it where it belongs.

I have documented and recorded how we behave when we think litter is of value to us, and more importantly, when we realise it is not. We never pick up a crisp packet off the street but we would be very quick to pick up money. A city mirrors its people and its people. Nowadays, when we are so conscious of our appearance, why are we not as conscious about the apperance of our city. As its residents, we are all responsible for moulding Limerick’s future. I have created a free local magazine informing people of the waste we do not recognize; the litter camouflaging Limerick's beauty.

For this brief, I was required to design a book cover for a new series of pocket-size poetry books that Penguin Books plan to launch. ‘The Rain’ is a metaphor for life & love. It is the key to happiness; an uncertain happiness. In my design, I have communicated the lust for Robert Creeley’s sexual desire. He longs to be distracted from his “final uneasiness” and set free from his persistant isolation. Creeley is looking for a quick remedy. Concentrating on the lust & passion within the poem, I focused on the sexual connection between two people, the passion, the flame, the fire/spark. The hot flame-like silouette (passion) will not be extinguished by the rain (life).

A secret shared. A humorous anecdote. A nod or a wink. A game analysed. A little gossip. The most popular thing in all Limerick pubs is conversation. It is an art. In public houses there is constant choreographed conversations, buzzing with recurring patterns and rhythm. Within each pub, there are ‘coded’ conversations which are utterly incomprehensible to anyone who is not a regular customer in that particular pub. Jokes, puns, teasing, wit, banter and back-chat are all essential ingredients of pub conversations.
In this typographic piece, I have illustrated the technique of ‘free-associations’ (this occurs when a word in one phrase causes a person to unknowingly associate that word with another phrase). I have demonstatrated how conversations are a network. The topic at the start of a conversation can be completely different to what is being conversed at the end. The phrase which begins a conversation, acts as a catalyst; allowing the colourful conversation to expand into a web of discussion.

Living in Limerick; the city has made quite an impression on me and has left me with many memories that will stay with me for some time. For this project, I was required to creatively express my impression of Limerick City through photography. I am constantly fascinated with all of Limerick's natives and the role they play in awakening the city. From Nature to Man I was curious to investigate and document what activities the local inhabitants are up to each morning. <img
For this brief I was required to design a title sequence for the Mexican film 'Amores Perros' (Love's a bitch) directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. My title sequence is based on the distinct relationship between the three main characters and their pet dogs. The dogs mirror each of their owners personalities and lifestyles. The silouettes represent the deception in the film, and the shattered glass is a symbol of their violent behaviour. My title sequence illustrates the aggression and broken lives of these characters.

'Documenting a fashion designer' was a collaboration project between 4th Yr Visual Communications students and 4th Yr Fashion students from the Limerick School of Art and Design. The Visual Communication Students were asked to create three conceptual photographs based on the Fashion Students previous collection. The photographs documented the designer's sketchbook, their collection and a portrait of the designer. This stunning collection by Anne-Marie Nelligan is inspired by the 2006 drama film ‘This is England’. Her work captures the essence of the ‘skinhead’ subculture that circulated among working class youths in the United Kingdom in the 1980’s. After researching ‘This is England’ and who Anne-Marie is as a designer, the skinhead culture and their surrounding environments became of particular interest to me. I have documented her collection playing on the themes of street-culture and the urban environment. In this project I have illustrated Anne-Marie’s ability to take a past subculture into the future while simultaneously portraying her very own unique style.

For this brief I was required to create a self-portrait using a photographic images. This piece of work demonstrates the importance of a designer's 'signature'. It visually represents my current status as a Visual Communicator. Our signature is a distinctive mark and characteristic that we create. People associate us with our name; it forms part of our identity. Our Names (as people) distinguish us from one another, and our style (as designers) visually separates us from one another. This piece is a portrayal of the importance of communicating who I am as a designer. It is a self-representation of my style of design, by which I am definitively recognizable and known.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitA.jpg" width="670" height="473" width_o="842" height_o="595" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitA_o.jpg" data-mid="1804537" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitD.jpg" width="670" height="473" width_o="842" height_o="595" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitD_o.jpg" data-mid="1804540" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitB.jpg" width="670" height="473" width_o="842" height_o="595" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitB_o.jpg" data-mid="1804538" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitC.jpg" width="670" height="473" width_o="842" height_o="595" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/30279/407531/Self_PosrtraitC_o.jpg" data-mid="1804539" border="0" align="left"/>
