<description>SELFPORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG WOMAN

Selfportrait of the Artist as a Young Woman explores the concept of presence of the artist using
the practice of performance based art and audio visual installation.
My work wants seeks to connect the viewer with the artistic state of mind of the woman artist during the creative process by focusing on the symbolic action of writing on my own projected selfportrait until it will be no longer visible. The title was inspired by a semi-autobiographical novel by James Joyce "The portrait of the artist as a young man" (1916), which tells of the awakening of intellectual, philosophical and religious young Stephen Dedalus who begins to rebel against conventions and Irish Catholicism among which he grew up. The audio visual installation, which is the result of the performance, is the synthesis of this intimate moment in which doubts, fragility, rebellion and self criticism are shared without fear with the viewer.
The sound broadcasted outside the big gallery has a strong narrative function.
The action of writing guiding freely into the written-words that cover the slow-motion
selfportrait.

N U - CLEAR

Untitled from Giulia Scarantino on Vimeo.

The aim of this work is to explore the concept of art as a link with the real world and the social context remixing something that already exist to create a new work, with a new identity and function.

The shots were taken just a few miles from Latina, my town in Italy, where there's a nuclear power station still escapes radioactive slag in the area.
For this reasons, there's an abnormal increase in cancer cases in this area.
It is out of use at the moment but thanks to the nuclear strategy that the executive Berlusconi has already launched several months ago, the power station will be restored.
This work, doesn't want to tell if the national politic evolution's plan could become more dangerous for the ambient or not (because it's obvious) but simply generate any question about it in each of us.
The audio-track is remixed by me in synch with the video-clips and sometimes pitched in relation with the saturated acid colors I choose for the images.
The sound source comes from a noise-artist called Riotslug, probably Australian but nobody seems to be sure about it, discovered surfing on a Rome based net promotion&#38;distribution label called Selva Elettrica.
The idea is to communicate the dangerous activity of this place, even if it appears static, abandoned and fixed. "nu - clear" is related to the mission of the works itself to make visible the dismissed and forgotten, and create a "nu" consciousness.

IMPERFECT MEMORIES AND IMPERFECT THOUGHTS

This composition is inspired by the book Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.
An intimate, introspective book exploring the world of feelings such as loneliness, unconditional love and pure suffering.
This piece was conceived as a guide, a soundscape that accompanies the reading of this statement complying through the concepts of repetition, fading and insight, a trip in the warmth of a memory and its subsequent fading:
"Clutching these faded, fading, imperfect memories to my breast, I go on writing this book with all the desperate intensity of a starving man sucking on bones.
This is the only way I know to keep my promise to Naoko. Once, long ago, when I was still young, when the memories were far more vivid than they are now, I often tried to write about her. But I couldn't produce a line. I knew that if that first line would come, the rest would pour itself onto the page, but I could never make it happen. Everything was too sharp and clear, so that I could never tell where to start - the way a map that shows too much can sometimes be useless.
Now, though, I realize that all I can place in the imperfect vessel of writing are imperfect memories and imperfect thoughts." (1)
What certainly interested me most in this project was the idea of sound as a stream of consciousness, so indefinite and uncertain as it was my process of composition during the recording of the piece.
The mystical element is clearly explicit. The creation of the piece and the performative act are a symbol of a direct connection between unconscious, instrument and words.
These words, even if taken out of the novel's context, will assume a new identity, then it doesn't matter whether the users don't know the author of the book or if don't know the novel's synopsis. The words are like sounds that will be positioned anywhere within the soundscape.
I thought that it could be more interesting to retain an intimate atmosphere as the concept required implicitly. The space is always part of the art-work, even if it is a sound piece.
The space is a mental space, the space of our memories, which remind us some emotion, somewhere in our mind.
Although the creative act has a strong element of improvisation, this composition, however, has a structural symmetry, a regular pattern with little variations of sound that sometimes create an interesting imbalance. The hypnotic mood of the piece is an excuse to get away from the real world and immerse themselves in the imaginary, taking inspiration from memory with nostalgia:
"I'll come to see you again," I said. "And what is the other wish?"
"I want you always to remember me. Will you remember that I existed, and that I stood next to you here like this?"
"Always," I said. "I'll always remember."
She walked on without speaking. The autumn light filtering through the branches danced over the shoulders of her jacket. A dog barked again, closer than before. Naoko climbed a small mound, walked out of the forest and hurried down a gentle slope. I followed two or three
steps behind. "Come over here," I called towards her back. "The well might be around here somewhere." (2)
