Old friend and long time collaborator Don Giulio Miglietta needed audio for an info animation he was working on with creative collaboration upstarts Bracket Creative. Armed with my Zoom H4N I raided the office, the street, a sewing machine and a poor innocent stationary cupboard. Here are the results.

And of course there's a happy ending! It's the Don!!

Crow's Nest from Robert Milne on Vimeo.
Sound design, Foley.

Well, I've known the fabulous Robert Milne since my days at Airside. His wit and talent are second to none. The animating superhero with an insatiable appetite for Marmite and cycling.

So when he asked me to provide the sound for his short film Crow's Nest I jumped at the chance. Bearing in mind the setting, subject and message it felt best to make the audio as subtle as possible. No music, no heavy sound design, just some dead flowers, some wet chamois leather and a grey day on Hampstead Heath with my trusty H4n.

Some good old fashioned foley!

Already receiving excellent reviews and doing the festival rounds during the summer 2013, Crow's Nest is that rare and beautiful beast, the quiet short that shouts louder than all the rest.

Mr & Mrs are a lovely bunch. They create and animate in so many ways you might see them as a home for every different style and technique. Paper, plasticine, power macs and pixels all live happily under the same roof.

They also love to do things for the sheer fun of it and this year the chose to create an animated christmas card. The know how much I like 'fun' so they asked me to provide the sound. And to sing!

So here it is and a very merry christmas to you all!

Sound Design, Foley, Final Mix

Siobhan Squire represents a fabulous roster of artists and designers. One of those is the wonderful Richard Hogg. Back in October they were commissioned to create an advert for Danish insurance company Alka.

I was asked to provide the sound and perform a final mix for broadcast. Using some of my favourite sound sources (kids toys, bubblegum, lighter) and recording specific location audio (car interior, automotive workshop) I wove the sound together in the jolly, light hearted manner that was intended. With the supplied music edited to fit (let's lose that middle eight) and the VO sent directly from Copenhagen, the final mix was done at the excellent Sounds And Sons.

All in all a nice project turned around in record time.

Jnr Astronaut - introduction from Crank Publishing Ltd on Vimeo.
Voice

Junior Astronaut is an app conceived, scripted and designed solely with the iPad in mind. Inspired by the legendary Kid's Space books of the 1950's and 60's it uses beautiful illustration, deep interactivity and creative story-telling to engage, entertain and educate a younger audience. Topics such as gravity, mass, weight and forces are applied to this perennially exciting, blockbusting and science-packed adventure.

And the lovely people at Crank Publishing needed a voice to guide the user through this fantastic, entertaining and informative ipad adventure.

The script itself was particularly large and the tone had to be informative without losing sight of the immense amounts of fun to be had. My brief was a blend of Horrible Histories with a slightly unhinged Scottish scientist. Not as tough as you might think. It was recorded over the period of two days with further editing, mastering and, of course, a well organised structure for the programmers at Crank to use.

All in all great fun that reminded me of the work I did for the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

Every day is indeed a school day.

Chivas Regal 25 from Rupert Ray on Vimeo.
Sound Design

The fabulous Rupert Ray were commissioned by Someone to create an interactive microsite for all Chivas employees to access a wealth of brand guidelines. Taking inspiration from the birthplace of Chivas Regal 25, 1920’s Manhattan has been brought to life with a 3D animated cityscape beautifully blending the mood of a Hugh Ferriss drawing with the buzz and energy of the modern city. The user seamlessly navigates around the city selecting bespoke content within 8 hotspots placed in key iconic locations.

I was asked to design the atmospheric audio for each of the eight hotspots, the transitions between them and a method of matching the visual movements with the audio.

For each hotspot I used four 30 second loops playing simultaneously with different emphasis on certain key positions relative to the hotspot. This and a four way crossfade matching the camera move completed a seamless audio environment.

When you see that 1920's trawler disappear as you pull away from the docks towards the theatre you'll hear it's horn drift away as the bustling sound of city life takes over.

A truly beautiful project that everyone involved can be proud of. Above is a short film about the making of this outstanding microsite.

Now where's my drink!

When ENSO approached me to work on the sound for a Greenpeace campaign about KFC I was only vaguely aware of exactly how this infamous, oh-so-cheap, shareholder loving colossus may have gained the attention of Greenpeace.

It was not as I first presumed. To make their product one of the cheapest possible KFC need to cut many corners.

And trees.

Yup, KFC are taking huge bites out of rainforests to ensure their packaging is as cheap (and throw away) as possible. ENSO hatched a plan inspired by the global Occupy movement to 'occupy' a collection of KFC promotional films. Appearing initially genuine it's only moments before the packaging 'revolts' and shines a light on the Colonels true state of affairs.

I worked on five 'occupied' films in total. To see them all in one place please click here. If you're there you can also join the conversation and sign up.

Some things shouldn't be that cheap!

Composition, Sound Design.

Boffins at the Royal Greenwich Observatory asked shy genius Richard Hogg and designer Anna Fidalgo to create a short animation explaining how scientists are able to measure the distance between stars using parallax, doppler and red shift. This is to compliment an exhibition at the RGO to coincide with the Transit Of Venus, happening this June 2012.

Along with first rate animators Kwok Fung Lamb, Robert Milne and Ross Philips, Dick and Henry Holland created the most simple, informative and entertaining four minutes ever.

I was asked to sound design, produce and compose a fitting piece of music. I chose a waltz. I love a waltz. The voiceover was from Head Astronomer Olivia Johnson recorded on her laptop in her office. All in all this was one of the most informative and enjoyable pieces I've worked on recently. If only school was like this.

The reaction to the film has been tremendous. Creative Review wrote a wonderful piece about the process and people involved in their blog. To see an instrumental version of this film, scroll down to the bottom.

Every day's a school day!

From the ashes of groundbreaking design company Airside comes the phoenix known as Airside Nippon. Based in the heart of Tokyo one of their first jobs was to create three 15 second musical films to help brand a new Japanese cable TV channel M-On.

I was asked by those talented peeps at Airside Jp to compose and sound design for the M-On project. What was needed was strong audio branding that would be instantly recognisable yet transferable across many styles. Using Airside Nippon's visual watercolour branding and clients broad musical outlook as reference I set to work. The results you can see here.

A big thanks to Henki, Hiromi and skype for making this happen.

Mens knitwear and groundbreaking fashion label Sibling commissioned film makers Sam Renwick and Thomas Bryant to make a short film. The film showcases Siblings AW 2012 Collection and was shown as part of London Fashion Week at Somerset House in London. The Sibling exhibit used 3 wide screen TV's tipped on their side to mimic visitors hour at a prison, with each inmate on each of the three screens.

I was asked to sound design for the exhibition. The brief : vaguely sinister, otherworldly and timeless with an overall dreamlike feel. And clearly a prison. Using everything from a ball of paper, soft synths to a sheet of steel, working on this project was a joy.
