“Free” is designed to change the perception of things around us, particularly reusable objects and edible food that’s been wasted in the trash. Once things are out of the context of a store and without attractive packaging, they are seen as useless. “Free” gives these things a new image, and inspire discourse about the value of everything around us.

Ongoing project...

<description>The New York exhibition for the $50 Campaign asked New Yorkers the same question I had asked the Ugandan kids, what would you buy with $50? In a city like New York and at an economic turning point as of right now, the question raised many thoughts on the value of money. The exhibition also gave people a chance to see all of the drawings and portraits in person, and build an emotional connection with the Ugandan kids.

Following the exhibition closing, I spent a week to deliver each drawing/portrait sold to the New Yorkers at their addresses. This allowed me to create a visual comparison to the kids in Uganda.

<description>Station is a full service high-end printing company. What's unique about them is that their space is a 1,300 sq ft studio located in the heart of Tribeca, NYC. (73 Franklin Street) To take full advantage of their amazing space and location, they wanted to rebrand themselves as a Printer/Gallery. That makes it very easy for anyone who have digital files of their works to put on an exhibition in Station. I brainstormed with Station on the idea of Print+Show. And redesigned their website from a technical and text heavy printer site to a contemporary gallery website.

<description>What would you buy with $50?
This was the question asked of more than 100 kids in Uganda, from rural villages to the sprawling capital city. The kids responded with drawings of what they would buy if they had $50. Drawings and portraits of the children are for sale through the campaign website for $50 each. All of the proceeds benefit the Circle of Peace School, a school that provides high quality education to these kids, many of whom are AIDS orphans.

"What would you buy with $50" is a question rarely asked of the kids I lived with in Uganda. It is rare because people tend to go to Uganda to give out things without ever asking what the kids would buy if they had the money. In Uganda, $50 can provide everyday expenses and education to a child for a whole year. In a child's mind, it can buy alligators, flight to New York City, banana tree, and many other things they have dreamed of. The drawings provide a way for them to express themselves, and also give them the opportunity to participate in helping themselves by raising money for their school.

The point of the campaign is not to buy the specific things the kids drew, but to help them realize what they want. A drawing of an iPod means more than just the material product. It symbolizes a better life. Through the education provided to them by the Circle of Peace School, the kids will have the opportunity to build a better life. One day they will be able to buy what they drew for themselves.

All 151 drawings and portraits are on www.50dollars.org

As of now, the campaign have raised close to $10,000 for the Peace School. Over 100,000 visitors visited the campaign site.
