Architectural Growth Systems

Installation Coordinator: Filipa Valente
Installation design: Filipa Valente in collaboration with Adam Holloway and João Bravo da Costa
Fabrication Lab: FabLab EDP
Construction team: AAVSLX (David Guerra, Rodrigo Henriques, Simão Botelho, Samuel Sardinha, Oda Bergli, Robert Bogard, Filipa Valente, Adam Holloway)

SYSGRA is an installation piece which is inspired by structural systems of growth that exist in nature and can be translated into the built world. The piece is a prototypal experimentation on structural and articulation systems. Built as part of module 5 of the AA Visiting School Lisbon, the project consists of digitally fabricated piece at the Palácio Sinel de Cordes in Lisbon (Headquarters of Trienal de Arquitectura Lisbon).

The project takes inspiration from natural growth structural systems to create a elegant response to the beautiful main salon at Palácio Sinel de Cordes. The piece resulted from a series of experiments in l-systems, bracing systems and combines a fan-like structural articulation with a solid elegant base.
The piece creates a break in the circulation of the room and optical illusion effects as you travel through and around it.
The chrome finish enables a play of reflection which is emphasized by the strong beautiful light of Lisbon and the reflective floor surface of the room.

The installation was developed as the practical component of the AA Visiting School Lisbon and was produced using digital fabrication techniques such as CNC milling and laser cutting.

From April 2nd to April 12th 2013, the first ever AAVSLX occurred in Lisbon, with its base at the headquarters of the Trienal de Arquitectura in Palacio Sinel de Cordes.
As part of the AAVSLX team I designed and coordinated the module 5 Installation of the visiting school program.

The installation module is conceived as the practical component of the visiting school course, where the students are able to apply the knowledge they have aquired in the first days in a physical built installation prototype.

For the installation a large CNC machine was used at the FabLab EDP fabrication space in Lisbon.

The installation was then painted and assembled at the Trienal de Arquitectura headquarters, in time for the students final open studio presentations!

AAVSLX Team : João Bravo da Costa (Director), Filipa Valente ( Installation Coordinator), Adam Holloway (Digital module), Pedro Soares Neves (Urban Research)

AAVSLX Students: Samuel Sardinha, Oda Bergli, Robert I. Bogard, Rodrigo Henriques, Simão Botelho and David Guerra

[EN] During the months of the Festas, Lisbon becomes a sea of decoration and happy strong colors, The decorations cover squares, facades, windows, restaurants and many other places around the city.
The proposal 'Ondas em Cor' aims to reinterpret and recreate this ritual of decoration inside the spaces of public transport of Lisbon, giving the travelers the opportunity to experience the spirit of party and fun that is happening all over town.
The proposal's concept articulates tubes of different diameters, cutting them in varying lengths and creating elegant curving surfaces resulting from their repetition and rotation. These tube 'fans' create an elegant and unique surface that resembles also the rhythm of colorful waves.

The blooms are up at 516 Arts gallery in Albuquerque! If you happen to pass by New Mexico go and visit them!

Liminoid Bloom*s is an artificial interactive ecology that mediates the space between the gallery/exhibition and the environment of the city of Albuquerque. A responsive and performative ecology that alters the face of the public art space and the way we interact and play with it.

The Bloom*s react to an environment sensor placed outside the gallery which monitors sound, light variations and CO2 concentration. Visitors to the gallery are also able to overwrite the Bloom*s base behavior with their presence.

Commissioned for the The Eighteenth International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012 Albuquerque. The installation will be on display at the Main Exhibition 'Machine Wilderness' from September 20th 2012 until January 6th 2013 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012 represents the opportunity to approach urban public space use in a new kind of way, when cultural and social happenings will bring people together and into the fabric of the city. The history and tradition of the city creates a beautiful background to this opportunity.

Media - Urban - Scape*s creates hubs of choreographies between users of the public space of Guimarães and programmed performances or cultural events. The project creates a new typology for the city, where performance becomes part of the urban dwelling.
The proposal consists of a piece of urban furniture that transforms or is transformed according to time and circumstances to become inhabitable and manipulated by the urban inhabitant and performers.

Collaboration with Artist Sebastian Peschiera .

Los Angeles, the Hybrid City, a collection of fragments of multiple faces, cultures and beliefs. The city continuously patches itself back into multiple configurations and feels. While travelling through the city you become part of this patchwork as you move. LAX airport is the window into these fragments, removed from the ‘real’ urban realm, an opportunity to peer into the real-time moving city and its lights, sounds and speed.

The project gives the users and LAX layover passengers an immersive experience of the real-time moving city outside while simultaneously encouraging them to engage in a game of control of the interface of viewing. Live video streams and sounds from changing locations around Los Angeles are manipulated and mixed by users and affect the configuration of the space and its feel.
Fragmented moments in the city come together and begin to build the space, its silhouettes and noises becoming hybridized into surface, light and sound. The Hybrid City is reconstructed in the airport lounge and gives users a glimpse into intimate individual moments of urban life in LA. User experiences are unique and reflect different approaches and moods and the interface is reconstructed through these relationships creating invisible moving links between the city and the airport’s waiting lounges.

The project uses techniques of projection mapping and visual programming software (max/MSP/Jitter) to adapt to the space and shape of the screen while simultaneously responding to users who enter the space. A kinect camera is used to track user's movement and skeleton points in space.
