Awarded Runner-Up "PALYNOPOLIS directs our attention towards the biosphere and the subtle eco-systems that play a direct role in the structure of our cities. By suggesting a series of beehive harvest units to be placed in the green belt around the Aker River, which runs north-south through Oslo, the authors want to show the importance of counter-acting the decline of biotopes in and around our cities today. PALYNOPOLIS distinguishes itself by its friendly form of activism and the use of animal-architecture to tell a story in the context of the Triennale. The authors could have chosen more problematic places in the urban fabric and thereby delivered the message more forcefully. The authors propose their Triennale exhibition as a first step for a new type of urban gardening, inviting the public to bring flowers and plants for pollination into these urban beehives along the Aker River in Oslo...The beekeepers in their white protective suits could be envisioned as shadows, urban ghosts, that follow any architectural event, perhaps even any project. That the former towers was designed less than ten years ago didn't seem to matter much. We felt this competition was yet another chance to address a matter we cared about: birds! We proposed to keep the towers, to replace perfectly good inspection towers was not a very sustainable move, and instead equip the towers with some soil at the bottom, a wooden rack for plants to grow along, and some bird houses behind it.
