Twitter and the tweet serve as the new media equivalents to the telephone pole and posted fliers, allowing for the digitization of information posted in the neighborhood through tweets. A hashtag system allows for the aggregation of tweets to a virtual telephone pole -- a vertically oriented website that generated virtual fliers from an RSS feed. Fliers persist online for however long Twitter’s servers allow them to. WWWickenden addresses the persistence of materiality in an increasingly immaterial urban landscape. As a digitization project, WWWickenden succeeds in countering the mortality of information. But as a preservation project, it also raises questions pertaining to new media’s ability to preserve both the integrity of information and a sense of pastness. Although vertically oriented, the virtual telephone pole creates a panoramic view of historical time. Past and present commingle on the surface.
