«Lighter than air in terms of plot and character, Indian Nocturne has the gravitational fields of a black hole when it comes to the portentous, the gnomic, the elliptical.» (A.E.Johnson, The New York Times Book Review)

Indian Nocturne is a well known book from italian writer Antonio Tabucchi, who recently died. This work is a «book in a book», its story is a research on nothing, a gradual loss of self in a one-way trip to India. I read it just in the last days before moving to Berlin, when I was «headed for the great Unknown» such as the characters of The Beach.
Designed during the Typografie Grundlagen course of professor Simone van Eldik at Universität der Künste, the brief was about reconsidering the book cover by using only hand made typography as unique graphic element.
The concept is a typeface which letters are small details of an unended three-dimensional squared (like a labirynth) spiral.

Null:Eins (zero to one) is a typeface originally designed for the cover of Diego De Silva book Did not understand nothing. Topics of this book are the void and full of the life of Vincenzo Malinconico a «half-divorced, half-unemployed, half-happy» lawyer whose agenda has no appointments but lots of self-reflections on small important things from everyday that turns the protagonist into a sort of accidental philosopher.
In order to visually transpose these main elements l wondered about a subtractive typography in which the negative and positive are both present and finally I discovered the sixty four symbols of chinese Ying Yang. Those signs have an immediate meaning and a concrete visual strenght, so that I chose to trace and readapt the original chinese drawings into a latin geometric alphabet.

Default Printing (stampa digitale in A1, bianco e nero)

«The climate change phenomenon has long been a controversial subject both in science, technology and society.
Even though there is a large scientific and mediatic consensus on the global warming issue, we can’t ignore other equally important positions of dissent.
The increasing availability of datasets and reports on global warming has contributed to the rising of public discussions and a growing desire for knowledge and involvement from individuals.
Every controversy is a complex system that should be observed considering the multiplicity of points of view, allowing different interpretations and decisions.

Is global warming an unprecedented phenomenon or is it a part of normal climatic variations? How much our society affects the climate change phenomenon?
Does global warming influence worldwide water distribution? What is the relation between climate change and diseases? Will small islands eventually disappear? What is going to be the effect on polar glaciers? Is it possible to feed all human beings without destroying our planet? These are a few questions that emerged from the analysis of official sources and the explorations of online debates, to which we applied information visualization tecniques in order to uncover possible directions for the climate change adaptation process.
We will learn to observe and understand complex issues that involve social discussion on scientific matters, then to communicate the result as visual artifacts. The aim of the studio is controversies mapping as a supportive tool to facilitate public participation.»

This is the hardest work ever, guys.
It has been developed into three phases:
1) System diagram [final output: poster > link];
2) Controversy report [60-pages report > link]
3) Visualizing controversies on climate change [video]

Introduction taken from our report:
«The controversy raised from the proposal behind the project of the “Cape Wind” wind farm has shown its characteristics in a large part of the American web information during the last ten years. The plan of 130 offshore wind turbins to be built in Nantacket Sound, has caused a large debate involving different parts of society, in particular from the local view of Massachussets population, to the wide communications of the national communication networks.
The analysis is interested in understanding the dynamics of this event, paying attenction to the components of the “struggle”, the formations creating from the frame, their main issues and reasons, starting from a critical reading of selected documents and going on exploring the data availability on the web, helped by some digital tools like, Alchemy, Gephi and others.
Collecting and revisualizing these data results has permitted to think about and discover the way how different sources of information deal with different problems according to their position inside the debate.»

Some of the visualizations I made during the six months lab below.
