Saw blades and rusty steel populated my studio, as vanitas on a still life. The pieces found their visual strength in the contrast between the delicate organic surfaces versus the sharp industrial edges. From them I created brooches that hung on the body like uncomfortable companions, burdens of a neglected past, that engaged a bittersweet relationship with the wearer, and the surrounding space. a very distinct fascination and devotion to costume jewelry. There is enough in each of these objects to impersonate a very particular character; and though they don't show as the most educated in taste, I collect these curious jewels that draw me in against my better judgement, as a male contemporary jeweler. Conflicted with this, I felt compelled at first to cover them, then to transfigure them. The masking became not about obfuscation, but to reveal more about their qualities, their function, instead. This process activated these jewels as sometimes comical, sometimes rebellious, but more true, more honest, than I ever though possible. My attempts to hide them only made them more revealing, personalizing and enhancing their original festive nature. What began as an attempt at validation, of conformity, became instead one of enlightenment and acceptance.
