is a way of knowing in the world.

Today, many people recognize the power of design thinking
to identify challenges and frame opportunities
+
to manage complex systems and clarify ambiguous situations
+
to generate new approaches when and where innovation is necessary
+
to create deeper understanding of people and their needs
+
to shape meaningful experiences that uplift all of us
=
We believe in the power of design thinking
to effect positive changes in all kinds of communities be it a company,
a civic organization, a team, a neighborhood or a population.

Jeanne Liedka, Executive Director of the Batten Institute, University of Virginia Darden School of Business states, “The most fundamental difference between [design and science] is that design thinking deals primarily with what does not yet exist; while scientists deal with explaining what is. That scientists discover the laws that govern today’s reality, while designers invent a different future is a common theme. Thus, while both methods of thinking are hypothesis-driven, the design hypothesis differs from the scientific hypothesis.”

is a way of being in the world.
Design leadership is about bringing people together to question the status quo.
+
Design leadership is about guiding a process to improve the way things happen.
+
Design leadership is about facilitating others to design their own futures.
=
Design leaders support people to effect positive changes in all kinds of communities be it a company, a civic organization, a team, a neighborhood or a population.

In describing a new breed of designers as 'metadesigners' Richard Farson writes, "Metadesigners stand at the threshold of leadership, capable of achieving a new level of influence on the nature of design and on the society it affects. They appropriately belong in high councils of corporations and government, making policy-level contributions. As our global crises mount, metadesigners may be among our most valuable leaders."

Harold Nelson, President of Advanced Design Institute states, “Design is a process of creative thinking and innovative action. Leadership based on systems thinking and design action is thus about how people are caused to stand together through an intentional process of creativity and innovation.”

is a way of finding questions + creating solutions
through exploration + action.
In an interview filmed for his 1969 Paris exhibition Qu'est—ce que le Design?
{What is Design?} at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Charles Eames was asked
What are the boundaries of design?
His famous response was
What are the boundaries of problems?
Exploring and engaging these boundaries is an activity of

We think that design research can be a form of action research.*
