		<description>The gdcshow.com blog contains show creation ideas and research since 2006 when I started it as a replacement to the growing amount of sketchbooks we were using and finding it a challenge to share the contents of. This is a planning area for the annual BA Graphics shows at Chelsea and It has become a focal point for the discussion of new and old ideas in design and as an educational tool. The site usually site usually remains dormant from August-December each year but also acts as a searchable archive.

		<description>From 1985 I was in my late teens and designing sketchbook graffiti, at the time when the art was still being defined. I took a journey from typography to abstraction and from Futura 2000 and Syd Mead to Ellsworth Kelly. Airbrushing and marker pens slid into early computer graphics and a need to translate my shapes into the new computer packages of the time such as Illustrator '88 and the early versions of Photoshop.

The title of this exhibition is taken from a poem by actor and writer Dudley Sutton - a lament for the physically demanding work of the art handlers at the Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain). Prior to Sutton’s poem, the musician and artist George Melly had altered the words to the popular 1926 music hall song “Don’t Have Any More Mrs Moore”, and whilst there is a comedic aspect here, the underlying narrative remains that Henry Moore was an artist whose fame had surpassed the professional art world and entered popular consciousness.

Moore (1896-1986) has had a long-standing and important relationship with Chelsea School of Art, first as Head of Sculpture from 1932-9, and latterly through the School’s acquisition of his sculpture Two Piece Reclining Figure 1 1959. The internationally renowned library and Special Collections at Chelsea (now called Chelsea College of Art and Design) contain original photographs of Moore installing the sculpture at the new Manresa Road site in 1964, plus detailed documentation leading to the purchase of the sculpture, minutes from meetings, a small unsigned sketch, unattributed but possibly by Moore, from 1963 and even plans for a motorised revolving plinth!

This said, the centrepiece of Chelsea College of Art and Design’s Henry Moore archive is the bronze sculpture Two Piece Reclining Figure No.1, 1959, consisting of two abstracted forms, later attached to a large steel disc. The sculptor wrote of their objectivity; "Once these two parts become separated, you don't expect a naturalistic figure; therefore you can justifiably make it like a landscape or rock"

The sculpture itself is well travelled, moving from Manresa Road to the Tate Gallery in 1968, the Royal Academy in 1988, and further afield to the Jeu de Paume, Paris in 1996. During Chelsea College of Art and Design’s transition to Millbank the sculpture resided at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and finally returned to the college in 2010. The bronze elements of Two Piece Reclining Figure 1 1959 will be shown in CHELSEA space on it's wooden transport pallets complete with straps and blankets - a work in transit. This is a prelude to the sculpture being permanently sited in Chelsea's McGregor Courtyard on Atterbury Street opposite Tate Britain's west lawn.

The archive includes photographs of the work being installed, removed, and returned, and presents unique documentation of changeable art handler fashion - from flat cap to hard hat and tweed jacket to high-visibility vest. Through these materials, accompanied by a text by Natasha de Samarkandi, CHELSEA space explores not only of the life of the sculpture but also those who encountered it and aided this journey.

		<description>I have been involved with scenographic design since my MA at Central Saint Martin's College of Art &#38; Design in 1999 and in some previous projects to that with Montage Theatre and others. Digital Scenography is something I thought I coined in 2000 when the term was repeated in the Evening Standard reviewing a show I had designed, but I've since found another reference made beforehand in the states, so it must have been in the air! Scenography for me covers art direction for time-based media and performance and the designed movement of objects in a space be they a people or animated shapes or elements arranged in a film frame. It has links to the idea of Total Theatre where all elements are considered equally important - movement, visuals, music, text. This cuts against the traditional theatrical form where the text and the writer hold the most importance.

Selected Projects..

Figments is a collaborative work bringing together digital panoramic photography, image manipulation and performance. A series of seven images in which figments of urban life and a working forest collide. The viewer, surrounded by 360 degrees scenarios, with a cast of five actors, is invited to interact.

This work by Judy Gordon and David Barnett emerged from their residency in King’s Wood and at Kent Institute of Art and Design. It was commissioned by Stour Valley Arts as part of their international contemporary art programme. Each image is a response to different aspects of life in King’s Wood that the artists experienced during their six-month residency, This site-specific work was developed through visits, staying overnight, walking through the forest, recording conversations and making images in different seasons using digital photographs, video and sound.

As part of a related project called Forest Flicks, I projected the panoramas onto back projection material filling the windows of the main entrance to the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury with Judy Gordon interacting with them live.

Group Installation at Konservatorium Musikschule Zürich (Zurich Conservatory Music School) - light beam projected onto a metal tray with water then onto a screen. Music and voice is played through a large speaker underneath the tray cusing the water to react in varying Chladni patterns also causing the beam to change shape.

The Struggle of Utopia, a digital performance carried out in several public street venues in Brockley and Deptford with Judy Gordon, originally for an artist residency with Lighthouse in Brighton and later for Deptford X in London. This dealt with the original announcement of the Olympic games coming to London and a rye look at social regeneration.

		<description>This video installation was first shown at the Lethaby 2 Gallery: Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, Southampton Row in July 2000. 
The animation loop was projected onto a 5 metre wide screen inside the large dark gallery space.

The performers were given a 2 hour physical theatre workshop by Judy Gordon which included group-work exercises and games. These were filmed from overhead and the the positions of their heads were tracked in Puffin's Commotion software. The resulting data for head rotation and x,y was used to drive vector graphic shapes which replaced the filmed footage and took on the performers characteristics and conveying the thought and intention behind movement that the viewer can detect as 'human'. 

The principle behind the design was that after observing the public in groups from overhead, the head movements were more unconciously made whereas the body movements were usually less expressive or more planned in their use. By capturing the instinctive twitches and direction changes of the head, performances could be captured and translated to animation.

Also presented as part of this piece was a section featuring drawing over the filmed performers live with a graphics tablet which was re-recorded as a composite of the two elements.

This kind of 2d motion capture works on identifying and tracking visible points that move through shots such as the leaf points in this example below. It's now also possible to take the camera off the tripod and track the background as well. These movies are from the original tests in 1999/2000:

Montage Theatre’s first major production. Part choreographed, part improvised, this highly visual piece involves the interaction of live digital art, dance, video, music, sound and song. From tender remembrance to frustration, fantasy and oppression, Lightlines follows a woman’s struggle to find her place in a modern world.

"...Occasionally one comes across something which confirms ones missionary belief in the potential of digital arts, and the Montage show was one such memorable occasion. " Tim Cornish, Media Officer, South East Arts.

Performed nationally in 1999: Wandsworth Arts Festival, BAC; New Works Festival ‘99, Phoenix Arts Centre, Leicester; Chichester Festival Fringe; FIELD 22, Fabrica, Brighton; At the Interface, Chisenhale Dance Space, London;
Age Concern Fund Raising Event invited by Counsellor Bob Harris, London;
The Lewisham Theatre Studio, London; Volcano Film Festival, The Oval House Theatre, London 

Since then the research for this performance has been used as a teaching tool for many workshops using digital media and group work. These include Penn State University, Chelsea College of Art &#38; Design and various nationally funded arts schemes and residencies. 

Most recently, (see movie excerpt below) as Part of the Eden programme linking Chelsea College of Art &#38; Design with Japanese stationary company Kokuyo - researching the possibilities of drawing.
