Over the next two months I embarked upon an enlightening journey across West Africa. From my starting point in Morocco, down into the war torn province of Western Sahara, over the 40 degree desert sands of the Sahara, navigating the flood damaged route de l'espoir (the road of hope) Mauritania, into Mali where I traversed the Niger river aboard the General a Soumare, which led me to the people of the Dogon and then onto Burkina Faso "the land of honest men" before traversing the northern tip of Ghana to the southern coastal regions. LUFF was launched in 2004 as an initiative for the export and promotion of new British films and talent to the international marketplace. The winner receives a £10,000 cash prize and a unique broadcast commission to make four artworks for Channel 4’s acclaimed Three Minute Wonder. Presented by Film London and Channel 4, the 2010 Jarman Award was held on the 5th October at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Working with KentLyons on the award catalogue, I was responsible for researching photographic locations and then assisting the photographer during the shoot, setting up props and lighting. Tricolette also offers a community space where you can get together with other knitters. Tricolette required a contemporary brand and interior shop design. Working with KentLyons, I was involved in the early stages of the brand and identity work. I designed the chosen logotype and styling, which was then developed, expanded and translated into printed materials, online communications and the shops interior design. As the new crop of design students approached graduation this year, I initiated a self-initiated investigation and project examining the interaction between graduating design students and the design industry. I devised a series of questions asking industry professionals to offer a single piece of advice to this years design graduates. Then using Twitter I gathered invaluable insights from over 60 design professionals, including Eye Magazine, The UK Design Council, Erik Spiekermann, Bruce Mau Design, Emerge, HypeType, YCN and The Do Lectures. Having presented the second stage of the project at the 2010 Emerge exhibition, I am continuing to research and collect data, which I plan to formulate into a tangible output.
