About four years ago I went on a trip through Europe with a few changes of clothes and a Canon 30D. I visited 13 countries and took some 1,200 photos. I posted my favorites on a blog so friends and family could see what I was seeing. These are handful of favorites from the favorites.

I've never been much in the way of fashion. My closet has a handful of tees and a couple pairs of jeans. Chelsea Eager, however, has an entire online boutique. She needed a handful of shots to show off her holiday line--things to wear to holiday parties. So we had a party, waited until everyone left, and shot in the wake.

I've always felt that black and white digital photography is kind of a farse. I have a handful of vintage cameras on which I shoot B&W film and then process in my kitchen, which is as much of a challenge as it is an artform. With digital, pulling the saturation to 0 does little more than add borrowed nostalgia. However, sometimes the colors do say too much, and some nostalgia needs to be borrowed.

Peter Barbee is the mastermind behind the band Among Savages. His debut, The Wanderings of an Illustrative Mind, feels kind of like falling endlessly, which I imagine feels exactly the same as floating. So how do you portray that in a photo? You get a twelve pack of High Life and make the subject jump backwards off a chair until there isn't any beer left.

For some reason, hanging out with Madi makes me feel like I'm in the 80's. It might have something to do with all the Paula Abdul that ends up on the radio or it could just be her amazing leather jacket. Either way, nothing says 80's more to me than the bloom effect. So we used a handful of Kodak Carousel slide projectors and a strobe pointed pretty much straight at the camera. The light leaks and lens flares did the rest.

I don't mind being the kid with a camera always draped around his shoulder--the guy anyone who happens to be an actual photographer looks at and thinks, "great, another hipster with a DSLR." My favorite photos are always the ones I didn't expect to take. This is an ongoing collection of unapologetically being that guy.
