BRIEF

Create a campaign that is less about preaching the nutritional value of particular foods but instead focuses on motivating children and adults to take part in regular physical activity. Your idea will need to change behavior. It will need to get people excited about exercising.

SOLUTION

Our solution was a campaign that delivers heart rate monitor bands to families and individuals, with the aim of making exercise fun. The idea was to stay away from simply delivering information, as this has been a method that has been largely unsuccessful in the past. Instead we encouraged group activity to tackle the barriers that people who don't regularly exercise possess.

Collaboration with Kate Harrison and Dan Ulf-Hansen

BRIEF

A competition brief set by Penguin publishers to design a new book cover that is imaginative, original and well executed for The Big Sleep.

SOLUTION

The design originates for the ideas of complexity, misdirection and pursuit seen throughout Philip Marlowe’s investigation.

To visualise this a maze was constructed, then manipulated by hand using folds, to produce a three dimensional object that uses shadow and depth to further emphasise the narrative. Typographically the design was kept simple and appropriate by use of layout and a grotesk typeface. The title design was designed to be subtle and blended into the maze itself, the use of colour and manipulation achieve this.

BRIEF

A competition brief from YCN to create a piece of communication that promotes triumph’s bra fitting service.

SOLUTION

Originating from the tag line 'fits like a glove' the campaign uses studio photography as a means to visualise the idea. The hands are used to convey the support, modesty and seduction that Triumph offers in its ranges. The treatment of the visuals work to provide a contemporary and fresh identity that reflects the modern materials and production methods Triumph use.

BRIEF

To visualise part of a persons life to communicate something of interest about them.

SOLUTION

A series of double sided prints are used as a means to visualise the 'hidden' life of Marie Stopes. One side of the prints documents some of her greatest achievements, the other shows the more controversial and lesser known side of her character. Studio photography is used to illustrate these, exploring metaphor as she did in her writing. The pieces viewed as a whole act to both inform and challenge the viewer.

BRIEF

A competition brief from YCN to make the graze brand more distinctive and desirable.

SOLUTION

The design moves away from the conventional visual language related to ‘natural’ branding- such as leaves, plants , etc. It instead uses geometric forms to convey the fresh, contemporary product and the online nature of the company. A wax seal is used for its connotations making each Graze box become a unique, precious object.

The graze box itself is a very intimate experience so with the direct mail I wanted to instead have a shared one. Upon receiving a cracker one is invited to call a friend over, making the experience more fun.

BRIEF

A competition brief set by Puffin publishers to design a new book covers that is imaginative, original and well executed.

SOLUTION

Taking forward the concepts of transition and decay I used a leaf as the focal point of the design. In the lower regions are a series of illustrations featuring elements used in the tales. I used sans-serif typefaces to break away from the archetypal letterforms, using instead the imagery to suggest the dark undertones.

BRIEF

Having been given a random object we were asked to research its function, material properties, etc. Then to visualise this using no written copy in an A3 poster.

SOLUTION

The object I was given was an old drill bit used to clean rust from metallic surfaces. Photography was to show these example surfaces and linear elements to describe its function and the internal parts movement.

BRIEF

To create three editorial illustrations to be used in a
printed instance of the short story Spring Time by Rennie Sparks. They should illustrate themes, elements or actions of the content and to convey our individual interpretations.

SOLUTION

Interested in the idea of magnification used in the story I used electron microscope images as the basis of my illustrations. Using parasitic organisms and collage to build a large mass of crawling forms. The second and third illustrations reflect story events and are visually treated in the same way. Coloured backgrounds were made by using bleach over inks. The theme of entrapment and constriction is visualised by using lines.

		<description>'In The Bag' Publication
BRIEF

We were asked to design two double page spreads
based on a modernist and postmodernist typeface. As
well as reflecting the aesthetics of the typeface in the
design, it also had to include a detailed written analysis.
The most successful designs would make it onto the
online publication 'In The Bag' to be showcased.

SOLUTION

Schiller Antiqua

This design had to reflect modernist principles yet show
the subtle, quirky nature of the typeface Schiller Antiqua.
Using an accent colour to move the eye around the
design it also highlights examples of letterform design
written about in the copy.

Tribbon

Whilst exploiting Postmodern aesthetics, as it was a
written article, I wanted the copy to still be legible. The
typeface makes use of layers in its construction so I
used this in the design also. Shapes featuring
abstracted letterforms were also used and played
against the flowing lines behind them.
