Nothing Fancy is a ultimate minimalist wallet solution.

Nothing Fancy, the non-stitched minimalist wallet, is the first product in a range of everyday accessories reimagined for a contemporary lifestyle. The wallet has its origins in the classic image of the bundle of banknotes held together by a rubber band. The mission was to create a design with the minimal amount of materials, simplifying the object to its basic function.

Each wallet is created from a single piece of leather, requiring no stitching — shortening the time it takes to produce each one and saving on materials. The custom-made rubber bands make placing banknotes and credit cards into the pockets easy yet maintains the security of a traditional stitched wallet. The use of minimal material also reduces the thickness otherwise found in a traditional wallet. 

The same concept has been applied to an coins case, an iPhone holder and a passport holder for a range of contemporary versions of traditional accessories.

Chieh has worked with London design brand Hulger to instal a chandelier made from their new Baby Plumen light bulbs in The Changing Room, a former fitting room at Dezeen Super Store. And it was also part of the London Design Festival 2012. 

They designed modular honeycomb-shaped pieces made from one-sided metallic card to reflect the squiggle of light from each bulb. 

“We thought the organic shape of the bulbs would create really interesting resonances in a repeating, geometric, cellular structure, when the honeycomb surfaced as an idea,” says Nicolas Roope of Hulger.

The combination of the use of digital machinery and the craft-making process is visible throughout the process. Digital drawing plays an essential role in the planning stage due to the complexity of the structure. Laser cutting, which provides accuracy and neatness, is the main method of woodcutting. All the components are assembled by hand. Because of the heat of laser cutting, a natural burn on the wood surface is produced, some parts of the wood components are finished with hand-painted colour, and the others are sanded to reveal the original wood colour with a hint of burn at the joint. The paper craft inside is also folded and combined by hand. The challenge throughout the process was to maintain the balance between the accurate machinery contribution and the imperfect but humanly hand touch. Another intriguing part of this practice was to make the inexpensive material, such as MDF and paper, into objects that people would want to treasure and cherish through this careful and time-consuming making process.

Inspiration for ‘Urban Camper’ lighting objects was drawn from the symbolism associated with lanterns in the cultural of east and west, and how each has found a place in the heart of the other. On a broader level, they attempt to encapsulate the contrast and contradiction in building elaborate wood cages and delicate paper shades.

There is a fundamental difference between how the notion of a ‘lantern’ is perceived in these two cultures. In the orient, the lantern is generally conceived as a lightweight portable lighting devise consisting of wood or bamboo, and paper. When wood is used, it forms the inner structure, giving shape and strength, forming a skeleton onto which paper is fixed as a membrane; it protects the inner flame from winds while allowing enough illumination to fulfil the lantern’s purpose.  Images of occidental lanterns in the mind are of hard metal cages and cold glass, such as the gas lighting, which was first invented in England in 17th century, and industrial or marine lamps.

Moving beyond the different construction styles of the iconic lanterns of East and West, the original intention behind the creation of both is one and the same: to protect the light. Before the invention of electricity and the light bulb, the simplest and the most frequently used lighting might have been candles. But candles give only a weak light and have to be carefully protected from wind to prevent flickering or extinguishment. The lantern was the next logical step. ‘Urban Camper’ presents a homage to humanity’s taming fire for lighting, which can easily ignored by people in the modern world. The paper shades of these objects are made into diamond shapes, which is to illustrate the preciousness of lighting, and coloured in red and orange, so as to mimic the colour of fire. The wood structure provides the protection of the lighting, but unlike metal and steel, it gives a warm and natural sense to the objects.

Each lantern is made from wood and paper, which is widely used in oriental lantern, and their shape is derived from working lamp, industrial lamp, or marine lateen.

In September 2011, Chieh held an personal exhibition to showcase the 'Urban Camper' lighting objects, which was also a part of London Design Festival. This is the very first exhibition that curated and presented by Chieh himself. 

The exhibition represented a homage to lighting and the taming of fire as the cornerstone of humanity. It took place in The Rag Factory, a converted period factory building located in Shoreditch, east London. And the most interesting part of the exhibition is how the old factory space integrated with the industry-inspired modern lighting objects.

Some words from the exhibition:

Early in human prehistory, our ancestors’ ability to control fire led to the technological advances which brought us directly to where we stand today. In the ear of ever-changing technology, with our constant cycle of invention and obsolescence, it is hard to imagine a time when technological advancement moved at a slower pace and generation after generation read and gossiped, darned and contemplated by the soft, gently flickering light of a lantern.  

The invention of electricity and light bulb and all that has followed seems to have erased from our consciousness the warm and the preciousness of fire and light which gently lit human progress throughout the ages.

‘Urban Camper’ is a collection of lighting objects and installation present by designer/student Chieh-Ting Huang.  Aiming to create an urban camping experience, people can gather around the campfire and celebrate the beauty and the brightness that lighting brought to us.

British-ish took place at London’s prestigious Victoria &#38; Albert Museum during London Design Festival in September 2011. The show, curated by British fashion designer Giles Deacon, came together to celebrate some of the best new work of design graduates from London.

Giles Deacon selected designers whose humour, personality, innovation and skill marked them out from the crowd. Their works have been placed among existing exhibits in the V&#38;A’s British Galleries, and viewers had to find out those 'odd' objects like hidden treasures.

Some words from the exhibition:

University of the Arts London delivers some of the most innovative arts and design teaching in the UK and produces some of the country’s top designers, from fashion stylists to photo-journalists. This display is curated by Giles Deacon, and celebrates the best new work from recent graduates, presenting distinctive designs formed in the crucible of British design education.

Given the seismic changes taking place in university funding, one of the hot topics for design in 2011 has to be the future of design education. How much does London’s status as a design capital rest on its ability to attract raw talent and give it the opportunity to find its voice? This exhibition of work by graduates from the University of the Arts London, from ceramicists and graphic artists to fashion designers and photo-journalists, demonstrates how distinctive and innovative the output of this year’s generation of students is.

The title British-Ish reflects not just how London influences the world view of those foreign designers who come here to study, but how they are also continually absorbing and re-interpreting the cultural wealth they bring with them. Curated by former Central St Martins graduate and 2006’s British Designer of the Year Giles Deacon, British-Ish picks the best of the work created in the crucible of British design education, placing it alongside great design from the past in the British Galleries.

The 2012 Bright Young Things have certainly been busy. The group of fifteen UK-based emerging talents have been hand-picked by Selfridges from the worlds of fashion, art, design and food. As well as selling their collections in store and online, each Bright Young Thing has created their very own window masterpiece, exposing their extraordinary work to the one million people who walk past our windows each week. Selfridges.com caught up with some of the Bright Young Things to talk window art and being inspired.

One of the Duke Street store windows has showcased the work of seven designers from the University of the Arts London’s prestigious Future Map programme. The window display has been designed by StudioXAG, and it featured the white version of 'Urban Camper' lighting object, which was specially made for Selfridges. There have also been some pieces of limited edition lighting objects from 'Urban Camper' series for sale in the temporary in store shop.

Following the success of 2011’s ‘Bright Young Things’, the pioneering project by Selfridges to seek out and champion the most exciting young creators in the UK, January 2012 sees us re-launch the campaign on an even greater scale. The second Bright Young Things scheme features a total of fifteen UK-based emerging talents from the worlds of fashion, art and design and food. 

From 6 January 2012 until the end of February, each of the Bright Young Things will take over an Oxford Street or Duke Street window – their brief is solely to communicate the essence of their work. With one million people walking past the famous windows every week, the displays provide an incredible launch-pad for these fledgling designers to showcase their creations to the public.
