Ik verbeelde telkens een vrijblijvend voorstel voor de stadsbewoners, de TRACKbezoekers en de kunstenaar in kwestie. Deze voorstellen zijn geen verbetering, maar eerder een aantekening of denkspoor van mijzelf dat voortkomt uit een fascinatie voor het geziene werk. As part of TRACK — an art exhibition through the city of Ghent (12 may until 16 sept 2012) — and for AmuseeVous I made four illustrated reviews based on a participating artwork. I visualized a proposal for the citizens, the TRACKvisitors and the artist. These proposals are no approvement, but a sort of note or reverie from myself, grown from a fascination for the artwork. Ik ging op zoek naar informatie over genealogie en liet mijn eigen kwartierstaat opstellen door mijn grootvader. Vervolgens verbond ik verwantschap met wantsen — een insectensoort die over de hele wereld voorkomt. Zonder te vertrekken van een concreet verhaal, bracht ik in Verwantschap mijn familie in kaart. Elk personage, elk familielid werd gevisualiseerd door een vereenvoudigde versie van het schild van een wants. Het geheel werd gepresenteerd in een houten kistje met daarin twee boekjes: tekst & figuren. Op die manier wou ik het pseudowetenschappelijke karakter van deze editie benadrukken. Door het samenbrengen van verschillende disciplines (genealogie en entomologie) ontstond zo een nieuwe invalshoek eigen aan mijn persoonlijke kijk op de wereld. Verwantschap (Blood-relationship) is a handmade and numbered edition (five copies) that I made as a school assignment. I went looking for information about genealogy and asked my own grandfather to make my pedigree chart.Thereafter I linked blood-relationship (verwantschap) with Heteroptera (wantsen) — an insect species spread over the whole world. Without starting from a lineair story, I tried to visualize my family by representing them through simplified drawings of the shields of Heteroptera. The result was presented in a wooden box containing two books: text & figures. As part of the project Dragende Muren — on designing caring hospital environments for children — I coworked on an animationfilm based on an Inuitstory. Rijsbrecht Verschaffel and Aniël Czekaj animated the drawings that I deliverd into a charming whole. De tekst is ontleend aan Daniil Charms: Ruslands grootste absurdistische schrijver. Vrouwen vallen een voor een uit nieuwsgierigheid naar buiten. Het verhaal kent een sterk ongerijmd en repetitief karakter hetgeen me uitdaagde om er voor te zorgen dat de beelden na verloop van tijd niet zouden vervelen. Dit boek is te koop. De naar buiten vallende vrouwen (The women who are falling outside) is a picture book that originated in the context of a school assignment. The text is borrowed from Daniil Charms: Russia's most important absurdistic writer. It tells the story of women who fall outside, one by one, out of curiosity. The story is very nonsensical and repetitive which challenged me to make sure the images wouldn't annoy after a while. In plaats van een aantal illustraties die ik in de loop van de tijd maakte op een rijtje te zetten en een productiejaar en een titel toe te voegen, besloot ik iets anders te doen. Verzamelen is een terugkerend thema in mijn werk. Ik koos acht verzamelingen die belangrijk zijn in mijn tekeningen -- huizen / mensen / dingen / bomen / bergen / insecten / vogels / handen. Elke verzameling wordt getoond in een apart schrift en deze acht schriften samen representeren mijn portfolio. In third year I had to make a portfolio as a school assignment. Instead of listing some of the illustrations I made and adding the production year and the title, I decided to do something else. Collecting is a recurring theme in my work. I chose eight different collections that are important in my drawings -- houses / people / things / trees / mountains / insects / birds / hands. De poging mislukte en van zijn reis werden dagboeknotities, logboeken en onontwikkelde filmrolletjes teruggevonden die ons helpen om de reis van de luchtballon te reconstrueren. De tekst die ik schreef, is gebaseerd op feiten, maar doet door haar opbouw en narratief karakter eerder aan als verzonnen. Toch dringt de werkelijkheid in sommige beelden akelig sterk door wanneer ik illustraties volledig baseer op foto’s. Deze grens tussen feit en fictie spreekt me erg aan. Als illustrator speel ik op deze manier de rol van de documentairemaker, de journalist die het verhaal van Salomon August Andrée onderzoekt en verbeeldt. The attempt failed and from his journey, journals, logbooks, and undeveloped filmrolls were found who help us to reconstruct the journey of the balloon. The text I wrote is based on facts but appears as fiction because of its narrative character. Still, reality slips through when I base illustrations on photographs. This boundary between fact and fiction interests me. As an illustrator, I can play the role of a documentary maker or a journalist who researchs and depicts the story of Salomon August Andrée. Bij elke vogel hoort een kort stukje tekst geschreven door Elvis Peeters en de taxonomische indeling van de vogel. Observations arose as an addition to Birds. I chose to not depict the birdwatches from the main character in Birds in the main picture book and designed a leporellobook which contains the eight different birds who are mentioned in the main story.
