The project Boys depicts an objectification, and voyeurism I experience with the subjects of my photographs: billboards, and advertisements. These documents are in the form of graphic, sometimes verging on surreal, photographs. My off-kilter images subvert the maleness that could so easily be used to compose the graphic elements that I find in and around the advertisements I photograph. The chiseled abs, and beautiful faces of the models are my American monuments. These “monuments” intrude into the frame of my photographs. There is a relationship between the materialistic consumerism and the sexual experience consumed by the person on the street or driving by a billboard in a car. One of the reasons I have something to contribute to the dialogue of female sexuality is because of my upbringing. I grew up predominantly with my father and brother and we went on a vacation to warm, middle class destinations down the east coast, Florida, and the Caribbean. At these places my dad, who always had his camera, would take snapshots of unsuspecting young women. Throughout the photographs from our 1998 trip to Orlando exist strange images of an unsuspecting sunbather, the butt of a roller-skater, or just some pretty woman in a crowd. There was something about the shameless way my dad looked at women that felt powerful to me and I wanted to have that gaze. An extension to my “Boys” project is “Twilight & Me”. Introducing myself into the images where I interact with cutouts of stars from teen magazines. These photographs begin to investigate how women develop ideas of sexuality and desire during adolescence. The world of sexually-charged imagery intended for an age group that is just beginning to comprehend themselves as sexual beings causes a tension. The range of bad boys to nice guys is explored in teen magazines through images that range from a guy in a leather jacket to a sweetheart reclining on the grass in the sun. In my photographs I bring these images into my personal spaces and interact with them. The off moments I have captured with myself and these little men describe the fantasy that magazines like Tiger Beat and Pop Star propagate.
