It can also mean “passing especially quickly into and out of existence.” In layman’s terms, we also define the homeless as transients. We look down upon them, scowl at their appearance and shuffle past them as they plead for loose change. But Golden Gate Park attracts a rather different group of individuals. The end of Haight Street at Stanyan is a haven for people from all over the world to convene for various reasons. Many are attracted to the dying hippie lifestyle the area has been known for since the sixties. Others exploit the area as a storefront to procure and sell various illegal paraphernalia. And still others just use the park as a resting place because they simply have nowhere else to go. What most of these individuals have in common is that they are always in transit. Always planning, always moving, always traveling. I have worked in the area for the last two years and have always been fascinated by the diversity of people I see on the street and I decided to investigate further and employ methods of documentation first explored by Richard Avedon in his “American West” series. Utilizing a white seamless background in the shade of the park, I reached out to people passing by and inquired about their past, their present, and their future. What I found was that almost everyone I met was from a different part of the country, and that most of them had traveled the majority of it before and were just passing through. 17:44:46 +0000 Bryan Banducci - Photography 3006832 This project began with the realization that I had never made much of an attempt to shoot portraits. I tried very hard to think of an idea that hadn’t really been done before, and I decided to shoot photos by asking my subjects: “How do you want to portray yourself?” What makes this idea interesting is that the person being photographed would tell me how they would want the photo to look, and most often photographer’s work in exactly the opposite way. It was up to me to shoot, develop and print the images as I saw fit, and the result is a series showcasing a part of the large and diverse group of individuals who I have come to call my friends since I moved to San Francisco.
