		<description>The Machine is an exploration that attempts to combine the interests of 4 designers into one seeing machine. The result is a hodgepodge of different effects that gave us all a plethora of things to consider when designing a multimedia interactive installation project.

We wanted to create a narrative around a singular event that is captured in the "frame" we have constructed. One moment is represented in three different ways: through the sound, the motor you can see an interact with on the outside that draws you in, and the peepholes in the sides of the box that allow you to peek into the inner workings. When you enter the room of the this prototype, the first thing you notice is the really loud sound. It envelops you, making you realize you are in the machine's space.

The sound of the machine This was created from the sound a lawnmower starting up by layering all of the sounds on top of each other.

This first visual entry point is the motor on the outside. This is essentially a zoetrope running on a servo. The iSight camera can be used to point at it, and this influences the visuals being projected on the interior of the box that others can view through the peepholes. The external zoetrope is element that draws you in, igniting your curiosity even further about what might be going on inside, or what this strange object does.

The Motor

The following images show the various visual effects that exist on the outside and the inside. The fifth image shows the chaotic contraption of mirrors we used on the inside to reflect the projected imagery back out through the peepholes.

Once you've been drawn in by the motor, you will look closer, looking in several different peepholes and either being surprised by seeing your own eye reflected back at you, seeing the imagery of the motor back on the inside, or seeing a sequence of animations that represent the phenomenological event at the molecular level.

The Machine (various views from outside)

Looking through the peepholes

The changing light

One peephole for 30 seconds

A happy accident. One of us pointed the iSight camera a the laptop screen at some point and made an interesting discovery. It would be interesting to incorporate a larger, more deliberate screen on the outside of the machine that allows for this interaction as well.

Since this truly a prototype that is meant to lead to a more refined project, it is difficult to give it a larger context at the moment. For future iterations, I would like to develop a clearer hierarchy of the parts, and definitely use materials that more deliberately relate to the theme. For example, if I were to decide that this should look like a foreign object that just sort of landed wherever it is you are encountering it or was transported to the gallery from wherever it fell, I would use materials that are not obviously plywood and canvas. The materials should be something not easily identifiable or at least less common. I would have liked to put the "motor" on the inside of the box so that you can crawl in partially to catch a glimpse of it like the previous iteration I worked on with Mike in which we constructed a long tunnel and put a zoetrope at the end of it that was meant to be mostly hidden so you couldn't quite tell what it was. I also really would like to refine the narrative experience so that there are true surprises throughout the exploration of the foreign object. Realizing something has been captured and you are looking at, but then suddenly noticing that it is actually capturing you and you are inside it is an exciting interaction that I would like to explore more, though it is quite difficult to design in a short period of time because of the scale required.

Earlier Experiments: Centripetal/Centrifugal
(in collaboration with Mike Manalo)

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/p_00751.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/p_00751_o.jpg" data-mid="6509585"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/2.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/2_o.jpg" data-mid="6509569"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/DSC00216.JPG" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/4819/1339711/DSC00216_o.JPG" data-mid="6509570"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The above images show the smaller zoetrope we were initially experimenting with during the workshop led by Irene Kotlarz in which she suggested we work with light, shadow, and moving parts. We were trying to create an experience in which you enter a space (the tunnel), as you are pulled in by the centripetal force the spinning object is creating. The larger projection created from the small spinning object would create an opposing centrifugal force and be projected externally for the viewers outside to see. We took some of these ideas and integrated them into the larger project. The external spinning "motor" is the centripetal force that draws you in and the centrifugal force is captured on the inside of the box, only to be seen using the peepholes.

The Machine was built in collaboration with Buddy Bojorquez, Michael Manalo, and Salvador Orara.
