In 2011, my company, Orlin Culture Shop, was given its very first illustration commission through Angry Bear! AB wanted a company Christmas card which would serve as a fun way of saying "Merry Christmas" as well as a styleboard for the Angry Bear site launching early 2012.

I was really pleased how this one came out, especially since the style requested was a modern take on the WPA posters (something I love).

Here's a sneak peak at how it came together. Because the assignment was wide open, I provided sketches of some basic ideas and directions to serve as a discussion point.

With the sketches in front of us, the idea surfaced to create a scenic WPA style card. I did this quick concept in color to see how easy it would be to pull off the look. Once it got to this point, there were no questions as to whether or not it would work.

I had the good fortune of working with FreshInk Yearbooks through Angry Bear™. FreshInk was unique in that they provided students with the option to fully customize the yearbooks that would immortalize their school days. To distinguish FreshInk from its larger, cookie-cutter competitors, we opted to design a fun pop-up book style site, complete with movable walls, baby chicks, and quirky interactive elements.

I had the priviledge of illustrating an image for my friend Justin's blog. The blog centers around his son so Justin asked for anything with a bear image. Once I got going with it, it turned into this!

Be sure to check out the full size image here:

Detail shot:

These were the 3 comps I presented Justin, asking him to select his favorite to be turned into the final image. He chose well!

This was the first comp I did. I had an idea to have this lush forest setting growing on top of the actual blog content. Took about 2-3 hours to knock this one out.

Next I thought I'd try a more intimate forest setting, with slightly less fantasy based trees and foliage. I liked the lighting on this one, but it didn't do what the first image did conceptually. 2-3 hours for this one as well.

This was my last attempt - a manipulation of the 2nd image to form a cave scene. I liked how it came out, but again, not as strong as the direction we ended up going with. This one was about 2 hours.

Occasionally I find myself free to do non-profit work, though my free time seems to have vanished like a fart in the wind these days. Anyway, one of the projects I had the good fortune to work on was designing album covers for my friend and Pastor, Erik Lindeen.

I really enjoyed making the "mosaic" type treatment. Type always relaxes me.

While working at Netdevil, I had the great opportunity to work on Fortune, a Diablo-style flash game that you could play in your browser! So when they came to me and asked for logo and design work for a fantasy MMO, I was thrilled.

The logo was the most fun to work on because I love creating hefty bad-ass crests. And using golden dragons and skull axes in a logo can only mean success.

This was my first pass at the logo. The only 3d element I had to work with was the black axe. Everything else I made in photoshop for proof of concept.

Once the concept was approved, I enlisted the services of our team's great 3d modeler, Wooyang Kim

Website comps that came with the stipulation that the design be executed in Wordpress. ...ok.

The first MMO I worked on as a graphic designer at Netdevil (R.I.P.) was Jumpgate Evolution. The game graphics were great and the assets coming out of the concept art team were phenomenal. Their graphic design presence needed some reworking though - and that's where I came in.

Many of the assets I used on these designs and keyvisuals were taken directly from JGE's concept art team. Nothing beats working with great assets!!!

Designs for a video trailer page showcasing the first look at gameplay for JGE.

Designs for a "faction takeover" page for JGE's website.

A Keyvisual using a combination of in-game assets as well as elements taken from concept art - remixed and painted over.

A composite image I did for a trifold wraparound visual for the JGE Collectors Box.

Floor banners for the many conventions where nerdery I enjoy is not only socially acceptable, its encouraged! Artwork for this banner was provided by an outside agency.

UI Elements for the installer screen. I loved working on these.

Here are a series of layouts I did for an artbook for JGE that will never see the light of day. Too bad - they had some stunning artwork that would have been fun to show off.
