The Vancouver Design Nerds are a network of collaborating designers and artists who share a desire to engage in whimsical acts of urban transformation and other design opportunities. The diversity and inclusiveness of the group enriches the design process and propels discussion far beyond the prescribed parameters of a project, revealing opportunities and unanticipated, often surprising results.

Recently I redesigned our website: www.designnerds.org

Design Nerd Jams are our oxygen. Initiated to foster multidisciplinary collaboration between designers and artists of all persuasions, the Design Nerd Jams are a forum for creative people to discuss their projects and ideas. My role as communications lead is to design and distribute graphic invitations for these monthly events.

The Challenge Series is a seven chapter publication which tells the story of the planning, design and construction of Vancouver's Olympic Village. My role within this project was that of art director, working closely between the principal, the writers and the graphic designers to ensure cohesion between the written word and the images.

The intention was to document the positive sides to the story. many interviews with planners, architects, builders, etc. to really acknowledge the people that put a lot of energy and soul into delivering the project on time and under enormous pressure. time will tell how it evolves into a community.

Improving the process one chapter at a time. What's neat is that with a group of people who have never done such a thing together. So much so that we finally figured out right about at the 7th chapter!

A true collaboration - each person had a voice in the process and was able to speak up and give suggestions for improving the work flow.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_11.jpg" width="670" height="433" width_o="2048" height_o="1325" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_11_o.jpg" data-mid="12144620" border="0" align="left"/>

One key component of my role within the work flow was to create wireframes. Since each chapter was set to turn around each month - a lot had to happen concurrently.

Above is an example of one of the wireframes - this became the template for the writers and designers - to be able to start building their pieces from a common plan. it served many purposes but what i learned was the value of visual communication even within the planning and predesign phases.

What I loved even more was seeing what Mizu created from this template - striking the balance of their own expression and design aesthetic with the content rich material - a giant puzzle.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_13.jpg" width="670" height="433" width_o="2048" height_o="1325" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_13_o.jpg" data-mid="12144639" border="0" align="left"/>

Another aspect of my job was to translate chicken scratch sketches that Roger would draw to explain the various building technologies - heat pumps, net zero building systems, district energy systems, etc. I would take the first stab at it, revise with him and prepare the diagrams for Mizu to incorporate into the final product. Again, I am quite a minimalist when it comes to design so it was always really interesting and surprising to see the end result!

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_14.jpg" width="670" height="433" width_o="2048" height_o="1325" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/563257/sh-practivism-nov18_Page_14_o.jpg" data-mid="12144651" border="0" align="left"/>

And the result has been sweet.

Readership from 150 countries.

Translated in multiple languages

Gold, Visual Communication – Content Development & Editorial Category at the 2010 Design Exchange Awards of Excellence: The Challenge Series

Most Environmentally Progressive Printing Project in Canada, to Metropolitan Fine Printers at the Environmental Printing Awards: The Challenge Series

The potential and foundation now exists for further challenge series stories to be told.

Which is cool when sustainability initiatives become business models. the power of building a brand with that in mind - scalability - because really this is one challenge and we have a loong way to go in the world of sustainable buildings and communities.

Slow design is contextual so its definition changes depending on the scale and situation. To me it means taking the necessary time to consider as many facets around who and what the designed thing (object, system, experience) will effect over time. This includes the environment, the producers and the consumers, in the short run and long run. I am making an effort to expand the time frame in which I operate so looking at projects like the 10 000 year all mechanical clock designed by the Long Now Foundation. Extreme yes, but they are actually building the thing in order to talk about applied long term thinking.

A typical intended outcome of a slow design process is to effectively slow down the flow of materials and/or pace of life. Less consuming equals less waste. Careful planning equals less waste. Taking 2 extra minutes to crush the cans and bottles from mad max and bring them up the dock equals less waste. Slow design adds yet another layer on top of all the eco / sustainable design strategies I've been learning about through school, the green building world and my current job at Ci.

Slow implies a sensibility around the way we consume that is not about sacrifice but rather quality and pleasure. It also doesn't mean we have to walk every where and do every thing slowly but more about taking the necessary amount of time to understand what is often hidden behind the shiny surface and the allure of bigger better faster now.

The thesis paper and defence presentation may be downloaded at breavo.com.

The diagram below is a graphical representation of the hair pin design process that identifies three key phases of a project and offers critical questions to ask during each phase. The initial phase (planning) involves looking ahead to the intended outcome, while nearing that outcome (making, maintaining) involves looking back to the supporting research and early motivation. The orange dashed lines signify the shifting of gears. Undulating black lines signify variations along the same general course. This diagram can act as a tool for gauging momentum and the distribution of time within a project’s timeframe. The function of the hairpin turn is to illustrate feedback loops from initial state (Plan) to desired state (Do / Experiment and Make) using the design process to “turn” research and collaboration into a product output with potential for long term relevance (Maintain). The very fact the process now extends beyond the desired state to enduring state(s) is an important aspect of the slow design method is indebted to the Eternally Yours Foundation.

The diagram below helps to locate slow design in the context of production (y-axis) and making (x-axis). Starting at the bottom left quadrant with the majority of mass produced goods, dealing with high volume, high capital investment and therefore high risk. Moving toward the top right quadrant quantity decreases as does capital investment thus allowing space for creative experimentation and exploration. It is here where slow design is anchored, taking up space, acting as a counterbalance to fast mass production.

Connecting with the natural environment is an experience significant to the well being of both the individual as well as the community. Sustainable tourism is one of the most rapidly growing markets confirming that people will go to great measures to ensure a pleasurable and satisfying experience in the natural environment. What makes these travels meaningful is a contrast from the everyday; a physical, intellectual, and spiritual stimulation. There is also a particularly strong desire to capture those moments whether it is for sharing with others, creating a personal history or creative expression. However, current recording devices do not take into consideration the apparent need for the technology to reflect visually dominant thought patterns. Another common frustration with capturing our travel experiences is the number of devices one needs, as well as the time and energy it takes to manage the content. These insights, often overlooked by producers, can lead to the products' premature end life which then contributes to the accumulating e-waste world wide.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/264539/greener_gadgets_01.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/264539/greener_gadgets_01_o.jpg" data-mid="1134979" border="0" align="left"/>

evo is a personal recording device which can be worn as a pendant or pocket watch. An intuitive interface provides contextual information: location, direction, time, atmospheric pressure. It also captures still and moving pictures with audio and is designed to take with you on your travels. A GPS receiver enables the recorded files to be referenced with geographic information so, not only is the information valuable at the time of experience, but opens up wonderful possibilities for re-experiencing the personal media in a dynamic map based software environment upon return.

The pull string energy harvester which connects to the recorder enables autonomy and self reliance; an application ideal for use on remote camping trips and other adventurous situations where conventional power sources are not accessible.

An understanding and consideration other wide range of environments and activities within those plays a key role in determining manufacturing processes and technological components:

- formed anodized aluminium casing was chosen for its light weight, protective and scratch resistant qualities
- a series of 'O' rings seals the two shells together ensuring water resistance and offering soft tactile qualities
- a CMOS photosensor combines the image quality of CCD technology with compact size, adaptability and energy efficiency
- a polyled (polymer light emitting diode) display offers high brightness, high contrast, and a fast response time suitable for displaying video
- minimal moving parts for longevity and durability

SIDEWALK MEDALLIONS

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/all-700-04jan08.jpg" width="670" height="211" width_o="700" height_o="221" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/all-700-04jan08_o.jpg" data-mid="1070499" border="0" align="left"/>

The proposed sidewalk medallions explore and envision the relationship between the ecological heritage (prolific estuary, hunting and trade route for Coast Salish People) and the industrial heritage of SEFC, and the reintegration of the indigenous flora and fauna back into the landscape. A visual synthesis of ideas, the medallions offer a semi-literal, iconic chronology of the past uses of the SEFC site. Matching neighbourhood character with appropriate ecological taxonomies, an abstracted industrial icon occupies the centre core, ecological imagery surrounds the core and the outer rim employs text to locate pedestrians to the specific neighbourhood (Works Yard, Ship Yard, Rail Yard), alternating between name and a friendly sustainability axiom: tread lightly, look up, keep it
growing.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/railyard-1-1 relief_670.png" width="670" height="670" width_o="2048" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/railyard-1-1 relief_o.png" data-mid="1062470" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/shipyard-1-1 relief_670.png" width="670" height="670" width_o="2048" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/shipyard-1-1 relief_o.png" data-mid="1062496" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/worksyard-1-1 relief_670.png" width="670" height="670" width_o="2048" height_o="2048" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/worksyard-1-1 relief_o.png" data-mid="1062501" border="0" align="left"/>

BC HYDRO VISTA LIDS – EXPLORING THE SPATIAL HISTORY OF SEFC

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/Lid4-perspective.png" width="670" height="425" width_o="1397" height_o="887" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22115/248563/Lid4-perspective_o.png" data-mid="1070496" border="0" align="left"/>

These large blank ʻcanvasesʼ on the ground will portray a continual narrative across the public realm of the SEFC private lands that pulls pedestrians through the site, opening their eyes to the very rich and complex histories (spatial, cultural, ecological, etc.) of the area. Of particular interest is how the shorelines of False Creek have evolved from the original undulating lines, to very hard right-angled industrial use, to the present day in which we see a balance of hard and soft angles.

THEMES

Each lid has a general theme that can be tied to aspects of sustainability, and connects three voices from different eras, specific to SEFC, Mount Pleasant and early Vancouver. Themes include: Day to night, Bird migrations, Local fares, Friendship, Curiosity, Sea, Mountains, Conservation, Lost Creeks, Simplicity, Ecological diversity.

Each lid contains four content layers: 1. base map, 2. text, 3. objects and 4. animal tracks. These were carefully selected to work together based on the common themes of each lid. Each layer, superimposed onto the base map, plays with different scales of representation. A sense of depth is created through subtle relief that differentiates these content layers.

MAPS

Each lid begins with a textured base map that includes SEFC at a unique scale, both in the physical and temporal sense. They employ conventional top-down/birds-eye projection such that each lid integrates itself perceptually into the physical space of the site. Designed to be approachable from all directions ensures that the surface art can be viewed from any orientation, and remains coherent regardless of the viewersʼ direction of approach. The maps ought to be oriented to correspond with true compass directions on each Lid. This further anchors the art within the ground of its geographic context.

TEXT

The text used in each lid contains three distinct but personal voices from three distinct eras. The first is my own, taken from spontaneous journal entries, specific to the False Creek developments and personal experiences. The second voice is of Reuben Hamilton, an early pioneer to Mount Pleasant and an obsessive historian who frequently wrote letters to Major JS Matthews – Vancouverʼs first archivist – recounting his memories of trout streams, working conditions and the impossibilities of documenting Vancouverʼs developments. The book from which the text is sourced was published by Vancouver Archives and is called: Mount Pleasant Early Days: Memories of Reuben Hamilton Pioneer 1890 (!957). The third voice is that of Pauline Johnson-Tekahionwake, daughter of Mohawk Chief, George Johnson. Pauline Johnson was notable for her poems and performances that celebrated her aboriginal heritage on the late 19th Century. The excerpts taken from her book Legends of Vancouver (1911) recount stories of Chief Joe Capilano of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish).

To reflect the more private back-lane siting of these pieces, very personal and somewhat idiosyncratic voices were intentionally selected. This could also be seen as appeal to the public art plan's recommended strategy of crossing boundaries: the use of these texts crosses the boundary from personal, private experiences to the monumentality of public art; it also crosses the boundary between the ephemerality of fleeting sentiments and the relative permanence of public sculpture.

OBJECTS AND TRACKS

The objects and animal tracks represent an archeology of SEFCʼs layered past – through relief work, the non-present makes present in physical tangible sense – addition and subtraction at life size scale. These include:

• Imprints of fossils, plants, animal tracks, human foot prints as sunken-relief, and;
• Tools and other industrial artifacts as bas-relief
