This year's Pictoplasma theme, doomsday, inspired the trailer for the world’s largest festival of contemporary character culture to tell a story around a Macy's Day parade full of twisted characters. Far from the gloom and doom which usually goes along end of day stories, our creatures invade a vacant city and make it their own.

The initial idea was to do the whole movie in 3d and to render everything directly out of the view port. Over time we decided to draw over those basic renders and to layer the images to get some parallax in the final movie.
It was my job to define the overall style of the film by drawing all the backgrounds, define the light situation and build the shader and render setup for the creatures.

The main challenge in this project was to marry the real shot footage of the past contests with our 3D characters and to interpret the location itself in a graphic constructivism style.

		<description>role: technical direction, story, story board, previz
studio: sehsucht berlin

Sehsucht Berlin was pitching this project for one of the 2012 MTV ident spots that should communicate the warmth of a hug.

I developed a story of a big monster that lives deep in the woods. This was the idea the client chose in the end. I was also happy about the opportunity to do the final storyboard and previz.
Production wise my main job was to supervise the team of animators and 3d artists technically and to find a way how everyone could work in the same scene at the same time. Furthermore I was responsible for creating the forrest itself, shading the characters and lighting and rendering everything in the end.

Here are some styleframes I did for the environment (inital character design by Christian Zschunke). With those two frames I tried to express the intended progress from a coldish mystic beginning with a shy character to a super happy and warm end that truly supports the idea of a warm hug.

&#60;img src="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/108540/2805964/111201_forrestbuddies_environemt_happy02.jpg" width="670" height="298" width_o="1400" height_o="622" src_o="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/108540/2805964/111201_forrestbuddies_environemt_happy02_o.jpg" data-mid="26729869"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

		<description>Some character studies I did based on the great concepts from www.creaturebox.com. I really tried to focus on the facial expressions as I didn't do that before in a project. Also I tried to tell a little story which always makes a slide show of images nicer to look at and understand. I rendered the images in Zbrush 4R2 with some of the new rendering features and painted some details over.

The goal in this project was to bring a finished print campaign to motion. What made the print campaign special was the wood cut technique the original artist used and we had to imitate.

I mainly worked on the shots at the beginning of the spot where you see the car the first time, the whole ocean sequence with the ships and the sequence where the man gets shot from the back. I used a mix of "real" footage we shot (with the camera) in the basement and drew over frame by frame and 3d animations for the ship sequence and the rocks where the foot steps into the image at the end.

		<description>role: technical direction, art direction
studio: sehsucht berlin

MTV asked Sehsucht Berlin to do a 20 sec spot that communicates a close and caring feeling. It was pretty much up to us to decide what we gonna do. We saw this spot as a great opportunity to dive into the field of character animation and decided to do a movie about a mother earth like character and her children.

Our CD Mate Steinforth did some great character concepts and it was my job to bring those character concepts to life and to figure out how huge hairy characters look like. So me and Helge Kiehl (lead compositor) spent a lot of time in look development. In the end I did the modeling of the characters, the hair and shaders, the lighting and I was responsible to render everything in an affordable amount of time.
