My client, Beacon Hill Press knew this was going to have to have a long shelf-life so it needed to be timeless. I used the Nazarene archival photo of their "Pilot Point gathering" photographed in 1908, and expanded it for the front and back cover. Working with resolution was the toughest challenge. For the titling I used a vintage street banner typeface, hand-placed each letter, then ran it through a photocopier about 50 times to achieve its graininess.

Poster design and illustration and collateral marketing for the regional production. The client wanted the actual actors portrayed in the poster and I was unable to fly in for the photo shoot. So I was able to direct the shoot via Skype.

Psalmist's Cry is the latest book and media packaging from The House Studio. The content is written by psalms expert, Walter Brueggemann in which he addresses how culture tells us all problems are solvable while masking symptoms and calling the mask a cure. He points to 'psalms of lament' as a core initiative for the book.

Through the initial research, I found that a common Greek definition for the word 'psalm' is, "to be sung to with a harp". So from there I photographed a harp in order to represent the psalms in a beautiful but also imperfect place of lament. The book packaging, cover and interior images show the harp as an icon in places with cracks, holes, on the street, and in less-then-settling environments.

How We Got Our Bible / Book Design & Photography

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2109/324655/how-cover-adjusted.jpg" border="0" width="386" height="598" width_o="386" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2109/324655/how-cover-adjusted_o.jpg" align="left" />
While beginning this cover, I couldn't help but chuckle at the very literal title. Designer, Logan Garrett and I teamed up to design and photograph this book about the more famous book's origin, development and canonization.

The Bible itself is made up of 66 books, from Genesis to Revelation. So the cover presents an inperfect grid of 66 books. We assembled Bibles, hymnals and scripture commentaries and hand-placed each of them to form a larger representation. Many of the books intentionally vary in color, age, translation and size. To photograph we used a scissor-lift crane to achieve a bird's-eye vantage point.

See video of me on the scissorlift!

Forgotten People is an all-in-one package for local and global Christian mission and social justice resources.

The project emphasis is on the forgotten people of the world, specifically the people of Poqomchi'
(Poh-kohm-chee) in Guatemala. Resources include guidebooks, audio cd, video dvd, posters, and planner.

The client requested only a few things: modern, minimal, and sustainable packaging. From that point I decided to refrain from photography and allow the design to rest on three colors, simple typography, and abstract artwork. I painted a variety of abstract illustrations conveying 'lost and abandoned people'. For the packaging, only recyclable stock and ink was used and the only plastic used was the discs and the disc holders.

Project direction, illustration, branding, website design, packaging: Brandon Hill
Production: Recyclable matte stock with spot UV coating on artwork on box and disc digipak.

Designer, Arthur Cherry and I teamed up to brand The House Studio. The client is a non-traditional publishing company based out of a restored house in Midtown Kansas City. Their immedate needs included logo design, letterhead, custom business cards, coaster cards, mugs, and guitar picks.

The logo typography was designed to be clean and aligned while the "h icon" resembles a chair, reflecting fun, change, and personality. Multiple version of the icon were created using color and patterns for various use on book spines, promotional pieces, twitter accounts, etc.

After branding was complete, I photographed their staff for corporate portraits and aimed to reflect their youth, personality and brand.

The macro concept was to only use original photography, and for all of them to be unrelated. This then required the icon series to be unified in its symbolic style and typeface, so that it bonded the photography into a family.

Each symbol icon and photo represent the content of each phase of the Barefoot Training pack. Each were photographed with various lens and light setups, studio and outdoor.

By utilizing a dual image of a lighthouse and book, our branding strategy made way for a simple icon that works well on a large and small scale. Multiple test samples were created until we found a solution that was by and large equally recognizable as both images.
