<description>"Void" is an experimental process which looks into producing an oxymoron between colours and a visual story. Viewers will experience photographs which are intruded by solid coloured shapes. The placement of these solid shapes are placed selectively by grid systems to either balance or disrupt the composition of the photograph. The colours used for these solid shapes are chosen based on the anti-thesis of the photograph's overall mood.

The aim of this visual experiment is ultimately to evoke a strong and unusual emotional response from viewers.

<description>Shift is an array of machines shifting bits and bytes informed by simple and highly repetitive algorithms. 'Shift' pays attention to its environment through the ever-watchful eye of a built-in camera and responds to movement. Changes in state are expressed through audio and visual abstractions.

An algorithm is a process or a set of rules. Here, the algorithms are shaped by 8 persons.

Shift is a collaboration between Andreas Schlegel and SUSEJ.

<description>Universal Systems is a project handled by seven communication design degree students from Lasalle, College of the Arts. The focus of Universal Systems is a process-driven project that looks into the process of discovery, exploration and execution, where the process is eventually the outcome. Each member of the group is to engage in a single common activity throughout seven days, with a given theme and idea. The project undertakes the idea of chaos theory. Chaos theory hypothesizes that with enough observations, a pattern can be graphed out of any complicated event.

The daily task given to all members had simple rules: Firstly, use only an A4 canvas. Secondly, use only the paint brush. Thirdly, create as many, or as little, paint splatters on the canvas. Finally, spend only three minutes on each canvas a day. A total of forty-nine splatters were accumulated and assembled to form this poster. The final visual, which is an accumulation of all 49 painted works, supports the hypothesis of order amidst disorder. Individually the paintings are independant however when they are overlayed over one another it behaves as though it is part of a collective conscious.

- a barrage of images that creates a canopy of self-projected
  emotions with memory.

noun~
1. an exhibition of optical effects and illusions
2. a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or
    imagined
3. a scene that constantly changes
4. a bizarre or fantastic combination, collection, or assemblage

Phantasmagoria is a visual experiment that deals with memory as the key trigger for emotional response. The concept of this experiment is derived from a medical discovery.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology(MRI) provides dynamic scans of the human brain in action, revealing that when people visualize a specific thing, patterns of activation occur on the surface of their visual cortex, and these cortical patterns preserve most of the geometric properties of the object being imagined in the “mind’s eye”. That means to say, brain structures re-present the spatial properties of images in the world through a “mapping” function, clearly visible in functional MRIs, which documents the experiential reality of mental images by showing a “picture” forming through neuronal relays firing in the brain.

Phantasmagoria comprises of flashing images arranged frame by frame, then complied into a two hundred second video. The intention of the video is driven by the concept mentioned above. As this project takes a strong standpoint towards invoking emotional reaction by utilizing memory triggers, the concept of the "mind's eye" runs in line with that of this project. The video presentation flashes photographs of subject that induces a sense of nostalgia in continuous succession, made more effective with placement of flashing white frames to create an imprinting effect onto the eyes.

Everyone has a personal impression and emotional attachment to many different objects and events and these are personal experiences that cannot be replicated on a large-scale effect. Phantasmagoria aims to target these significant instances of personal and unique attachment. However, these "significant instances" are tiny and minute, almost negligible. For example, how we still remember the nostalgic sound of an antique transistor radio scanning through the frequencies. The difference between writing with a pencil and a pen. The smell of the sea, which usually relates to ideas like a vacation, a weekend at the beach, a cycling trip, there are infinite possibilities as to how one can relate an event to a subject or vice-versa.

The video is a highly delicate process that seeks to connect with all viewers, one at a time. This is the idea of catering to the masses of individuals.

A publication accompanies this video presentation.

<description>"Projecting senses" is an experimental process which looks into the basic use of emotions as a medium. Utilizing semiotics and memory, the sense of touch is projected onto the sight. Memorial experiences related to physical objects are usually tied to a physical experience from the body, visuals are created to trigger these memories to project that feeling onto viewers without the act of physical interaction with the subject.

Visual semiotics plays the part of signifying the signified and it is the basic tool for the designer. “Projecting senses” touches on one's memory to amplify these signified connotations.

The eventual choice of execution of this concept were the human feet. Reason being with their extensive visceral experiences with subjects with texture, which are often ignored, as opposed to the hands which are the primary tools to feel textures. Different textures which are often experienced by the human body are photographed then digitally applied to a pair of scandals. The following photographs shows the process and finished product.

The event of inexperience.

In the thesis "The Autopsy of Emotion", the issue of a lack of experience from memory is explored. Basically, in the event that one has had no experience of a triggered memory, he draws upon the "social memory bank" which provides a common perception of a memory that is bounded by cultural context. A personal experience over-rides the social memory, such that personal experiences are more significant.

It must not be mistaken that Projecting Senses is a replica of Kenya Hara's exhibition piece "geta" in Sensing Design. Different objectives drives these two design works into the finish product and they are independent of one another.

<description>This is a visual experiment that is a collaborative project between the autopsy of emotion and Locomotion, a project that has landscapes as a subject of focus.

Mnemonic is a way of experiencing temporality and emotion in experience captured only by memory.

Every visceral experience is a piece of memory that holds with it a feeling, emotion, or subject matter; They are unexampled and conditional. They are "significant instances" that are minute, almost negligible, but holds a figurative fascination aroused only by mental imagery.

The six sets of visuals capture significance amidst the mundane, each one independent on its own.

Nice to meet you.
This is an adaptation of common daily phrases that we present ourselves with to each other. The idea behind "Nice to meet you" is simple, yet significant as it is a landmark and emotional note when we meet someone new, or an acquaintance.

Did you hear that?
A common question we ask people around us without any hidden intention but out of pure curiosity. Often when attracted by a familiar or unique sound, we seek it out to identify it. It's often accompanied by the sensation of "It reminds me of something…"

Impromptu
Impromptu targets at random instances of reminiscence which are often unexplainable. To describe this is the best possible way, it is almost like experiencing a "Deja Vu" that is strangely familiar yet foreign at the same time.

Chair
A chair is plainly a chair. Yet again we do no pay attention to the sub-conscious effects that a chair can impose on us. For example, a chair is a symbol of authority and power in the courtroom and on a navy ship, but also a symbol of death in the context of an electric chair. The chair, likewise amongst many other things, can possess its own traits and character.

Tree
Everyone know his own tree. We often do not give directional instructions with trees as landmarks, that is because we each have a different perception. In this context. the tree is a representation of our own projection of emotional and temporal experience onto a single unique subject.

Texture
The sense of touch is a second natural instinct that humans depend on, it is responsible for a large amount of experiences that can be trigger by the other senses. One is often able to feel a texture by seeing it, because memory helps to fill in the missing gaps.

<description>Humans have always sought for the truth in all matters, quested for the beginning of every existence. In a way, it is almost impossible for a human being of intellect to be tamed without truth of his existence. We are unable to comprehend the fact that not everything has a beginning. This is a perception that is merely human intervention.

Perception may be the truth to the beholder; nonetheless, humans are bound to their natural instincts and their preferences. The series of six photos explores human nature, and how we try to seek comfort or security with our perception

These six photographs are originally black and white photos, which are digitally coloured, to reconstruct the colours as a human might perceive. Colours are not only bound to the physical realm, colours affect the mental state of human nature too. This series develops on this idea of human perception with colours, which in turn reflects human nature. Furthermore, the art direction of these photographs tries to avoid a point of interest or subject. Emphasizing on how exactly human nature it is, to find a point of attention, so that we can perceive it as a comfort zone.

I would like viewers to be immersed in these photographs, and whilst they explore the artificial colours and setting, they in turn, explore their own human nature.
