The rain garden was used to invoke this history with the use of planted rows of native North Carolina flowers and grasses. Ditch irrigation techniques were the inspiration for a water conveyance structure that also provides seating for the residents. Water is released from user-controlled cisterns, which is then conveyed through the seating structure and finally through the runnels that provide irrigation for the rain garden. A better understanding of the importance of green infrastructure is achieved by allowing the user to play a role in the stormwater cycle. Two user-controled cisterns collect over 10,000 gallons of stormwater every year and are connected to the courtyard seating that contains runnels feeding the adjacent rain gardens. The cistern educates the user about the benefits of green infrastructure and the large amount of runoff from buildings and impervious surfaces. Photovoltaic moisture meter LEDs inserted into the soil of the site’s rain gardens give insight into a normally invisible part of the water cycle. The instrumentation educates the public about infiltration and ground water storage while simultaneously providing interest for the nighttime landscape. Only after a storm event occurs and the soil becomes saturated do the LEDs come to life. With the help of GIS data, our group conducted a site analysis by creating an overlay of various site constraints, like the level of forest development, slope, a riparian buffer, soils, and disturbed land. This constraints overlay helped our team determine the optimal areas for site development, conservation, and preservation. · Site design promotes mental and physical health with preserved forest in sight-lines of patients’ rooms, exercise trails and community and meditation gardens · Preservation of a riparian buffer and a parking lot with 25% green space and integrated green infrastructure promote environmental health Each team member focused on a particular portion of the site for further design refinement and the creation of a grading study. My area focused on a stormwater plan for the parking lot of the wellness center. Slightly curved bioswales bring rows of water-filtering green space into the parking area while creating pleasant site lines.
