Fobis are a creative group of characters that support children through anxieties and concerns surrounding the darkness of bedtime. It is well documented that children are easily led to believe that darkness brings fear, usually in the form of monsters under beds, behind curtains and falling through dreams. For young children, these fears are very real and exist, very much so in their psyche. It is crucial that children have fears acknowledged and at no point ought adults dismiss them as unreal or as not scary.

As a textile designer and craft maker, my work ranges from ceramics, book making, natural dyeing for fashion prints to illustration with textiles. I love to learn anything new and build upon what I know, so I find being able to work over a wide range of media extremely exciting and fulfilling.

My work is greatly influenced by natural forms, colours and patterns, taking great care to consider ethical, environmental and sustainable issues. I plan to keep working within Leeds and continue to make and sell my work.

Over the last 9 months I have also been involved with The Young Curators Project, a curatorial exploration inspired by Artist Room’s, in association with Leeds Art Gallery. A group of us on VisCom have been working hard to plan, curate and promote our exhibition, A Series of Artworks Carefully Arranged, as a response to the Damien Hirst show opening on 15th July.

My position has been a significant coordinators role, managing curation and also responsible for administration, contact and documentation of the project. The exhibition is open to the public at Leeds Art Gallery from 30th June till 30th October.

		<description>
Looking at my work over the last 3 years it's clear to see that I have explored different aspects of art during my time at this institution. After my final major project it is clear that I am an Art Director.

My Final Major Project has been based around the subject of Panopticism, which has consisted of 3 different shoots on the topics of, how you are expected to behave, being controlled, and how you behave under unknown surveillance. I have also worked on improving my lighting skills and being more creative with my shoots.

My style of photography is creative, I like to bring a different theme to each shoot, this particular shoot was part of how we are expected to behave, I chose the 1950’s and created a series of 3 images to show how women had to be glamorous whilst doing the housework etc.

After my degree I plan to go travelling to explore art direction and develop my portfolio.

<description>I feel that my practice as a Visual Communicator cannot be described in a short word or phrase, as my work is actualised through a wide variety of different media. Throughout my three years as a Visual Communication student, I have had the opportunity to work on illustration, design and film projects (film being my favourite discipline to work in) but it was at the end of my second year when I was introduced to the idea of event/project management and curation through a variety of different work placements.

Throughout my third year and my Final Major Project I have continued to work on a diverse selection of projects, improving my working knowledge of the varying aspects of Visual Communication, always with a thought to the collective future of these skills and techniques. Where others may view this as being ‘unfocused’ on a single discipline, I see this as preparing me more toward a career in the creative industries; having worked in the different disciplines, I feel that I can be more understanding of what is possible, and thus can lend my skills more toward the direction or administration of a project; a position in which I thrive. Following my studies, I intend to employ these skills to secure employment in the creative industries in Leeds.

<description>Throughout the previous years of the course my work always had a more graphic design element to it; it was largely typography based and my projects were self-fulfilling. However whilst working on my dissertation over the summer of my second year, I realised that I enjoyed working in museums so strongly that I wished to pursue a career within these institutions. I began my third year carrying out volunteer based projects focused on both the education and curation sides of exhibitions. These volunteer projects have allowed me to interact with people ‘behind the scenes’ of museums and galleries but also with their visitors.

As a result my Final Major Project is very much audience based; as an art student I find myself interested in the aspects beyond education that draw people to museums and galleries. My FMP was split between two ideas; one focused on looking at visitor interaction and their interpretation of exhibitions through both in-depth research and social experiments, alongside a second project which focused on education activities and interactives within these institutions.

Upon finishing my degree I intend to continue with volunteer roles and aim to undertake an internship within a museum. I plan to continue with my education by completing a long distance learning master’s degree in Museum Studies.

My jewellery brand is growing, below are some images from my second series. Also, a recent project saw me design a brooch narrative, again surrounding the ideas of women in society. See below...

<description>I am predominantly a maker of 3D sculpture. Most recently I explored the concepts of Mexican tradition to produce skulls made from plaster and wood that were used as in-store visuals, and sold, in Jeffrey West in the Victoria Quarter. I’m also an illustrator and have undertaken various briefs for clients, as well as recently gaining the position of Gallery and Marketing Assistant at an independent gallery in Headingley. A large proportion of my final year has been dedicated to my role as coordinator and co-curator of an exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery that is running in conjunction with the Damien Hirst Artist Rooms exhibit. As part of this I am also coordinating and working alongside a team of creatives to produce interactive artworks for the event. I continue to spend much of my time in the casting and ceramics studios, and am currently producing earthenware baby head sculptures to be exhibited in Jeffrey West in June.

After graduation I will continue to work within galleries, as well as producing 3D work for exhibitions both locally and abroad. I’ll also be collaborating with another Visual Communication student with the aim of starting up various new projects within the city that create opportunities for contemporary artists, such as opening spaces that facilitate and exhibit young talent within Leeds. I intend to do an MA in either Fine Art or Contemporary Curation within the next 5 years.

<description>Whilst on Vis Com my work has covered many elements of film; art direction, cinematography, directing, editing, writing, pre- production and production. I’ve made animations, documentaries, music videos, art pieces, surrealist shorts, and installations inspired by pop-culture classics. The conceptual and critical element of my work has always been a high priority.

I have also taken to using my film skills to have a positive impact on the community through volunteering at a grass roots organisation making films for community projects and the council. I am hoping to volunteer at LeedsTV in order to continue to support the local community, art and music scene.

I am currently working as the Director of Photography on a short film written by ex vis commer Jon Hinds about snuff films, after which I will embark on a placement at Warp Films. My long-term goal is to be a Cinematographer, Claudio Miranda, Henning Bendtsen and John Alcott are heavy influences.

<description>During my time on the course I have developed a more mature and professional approach to graphic design. Feeling comfortable designing and presenting work has allowed me to tackle briefs in different ways. I have also been given the freedom to continue learning the many aspects of typography which have become the centre point for most of my designs.

My love of graphic design is driven by the aesthetic appeal and commercial application of the discipline. The design I produce is mostly print with aspects of digital and web based work. My Final Major Project has allowed me to pursue print techniques such as letterpress and screen printing, as well as digital work including coding and interactive design. This variety has made me a very dynamic and versatile graphic designer, and I can now apply my style to many different areas of work.

As a practicing freelance designer I continue to take on live briefs from clients such as Universal records and local businesses. This in turn continues to extend my knowledge and theory on graphic design.
