The general plans were given to us, as well the location of such building and from there we would have to design this façade based on a profound thematic research and case study analysis. We decided to use polycarbonate panels as the base material for the specific purpose of allowing light entrance through the building but also for their characteristics of weight (4,5 kg / m2) and fire-resistance. They were articulated with aluminum ventilation dampers which are automated. Aluminum is also light, easy to use requires very little maintenance and is recyclable. The glass panes chosen were insulating glass with low-e coating for the best combination of thermal insulation, light transmission and neutral aesthetics. The area, currently only partially open / qualified used to serve as a summer house for the queen D. Maria I. The garden still retains some of the characteristics upon it was initially designed, such as a large french garden culminating in an element for retaining water known as “the cascata” and a few paths corresponding to the axes of agricultural division. There are also a few abandoned remaining structures that served as support buildings. For the beginning of this project it was very important to look closely at everything that existed in this large area and compare it with old plans, trying to understand what should be renewed, what should be reintroduced and what made sense no more. It was also essential the analysis of a larger area (running along the river and up north) to better contextualize this garden area in the landscape understanding the functions it needed to hold, in close relation with the nearby communities, the access systems and also a few important monuments and public buildings in the surrounding area (suh as Convento da Cartuxa and the national stadium). This entrance is elevated over this dome and the access is made through a long wooden stairway that distances itself from the tower into the path of arrival. This tower emerges from the idea of lifting the main program above the trees in order to allow for a clearer view of the sky and the surroundings. Besides serving as an hotel and observatory the volume of the tower constitutes an experience in itself: the organic shaped void in the interior of the tower creates a contrast with the pure forms of the exterior. This same void organizes a spiralling stairway that leads to the top where the observatory is located. This is a path of resistance, an experience that starts with the viewing of this void right before entering and ends after the climbing of this long long stairway. The initial one is a group stage where the main idea is to define the general morphology and typology of a collective housing plan, located just above the warehouses from the previous project shown here. It is a narrow garden site with an important street front to east. In this stage it was defined that this building(s) would continue both street fronts (east and west) to create a sense of continuity, although to east it is slightly put back to allow for a larger walkway and extra space for ground floor commerce. It creates an inside space, between the two buildings that will offer a small piazza at north and a large piazza in the centre and finally a small garden space at south. The site is also quite sloped so these piazze are on different levels. From this stage on we had to choose a section to develop, designing and organising small and large housing typologies. I chose to design the building on the east side. The basic idea is to stimulate social encounters but also to allow each person a personal space, enclosed, where they can be alone with their thoughts. The concept or reference here would be the alcove, or the thick wall as in vernacular archictecture. These houses or prototypes would also have to be arranged in a system (along with some storage modules); a system that was able to be reproduced easily and that could elevate the prototypes from the groundfloor to allow for more privacy. The location of the test site was the inbetween space of two warehouses in Ajuda, going from one street to the inside of an "empty urban block", with an average height difference of 6 meters. academic
