The actual sculpture is a functional, albeit goofy, 10 foot tall red surfboard shaped like a bowling pin. The piece travels around various beaches and is meant to poke fun at Kelly Slater, who last year in essence bowled a strike by becoming the ASP world champion for the tenth time. For those of you not getting the bowling reference, you get a strike by knocking down all ten bowling pins.

The bowling pin’s iconic shape despite obvious scale manipulation and even when used as a surfboard is difficult to overcome. Based on the title to Robert Irwin’s biography and the Paul Valery quote “Seeing is forgetting the name of the thing that one sees” the photographs break down the icon, developing discrete views which expose the shape of the pin in all it’s inherent sexuality.

This piece explores containment: what’s kept in, covered, protected and what’s kept out. Robert Frost deals with this concept in the poem, Mending Walls when he muses that before erecting a fence “I’d ask to know what I was walling in or walling out…” My very delicate skirt is made from rusted barbed wire which originally protected a Chevron Refinery. It has been converted into antebellum finery. My fascination with barbed wire comes from my background as an architect and natural interest in building materials. The antebellum was a period in which women of all races were contained and controlled by those in power. The clothing of the era belies that situation by cloaking women in a semblance of civility.

The 10’ x 3’-9” pin shaped surf board entitled If Slater Bowled is 8x larger than life and is an homage to legendary 9 time winner of the ASP (The Association of Surfing Professionals) World Championship, Kelly Slater. He is widely acknowledged as the greatest surfer in history. Careers in a modern post-industrialized world have a continuum of existence with few markers to note progress or accomplishment along the way. Sports satisfy the vicarious need to experience closure. Like Paul Bunyan, we know who Slater competed against and how he won against all odds. The piece, If Slater Bowled explores the nature of modern myths, heroes and stereotypes and our culture’s relationship with both. It’s clear that Kelly Slater’s prowess is not in bowling however as his website describes “his burning competitive spirit…ambition and charisma” are characteristics that most likely would have taken him to the top in whatever he attempted, even bowling.
