Lin'guage - Cultural Integration through Language Learning, is a system that allows migrant people to better integrate into the local culture through effective self-directed language learning; providing learners with all the material, support and feedback they need to learn every day.

<img src="http://payload163.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/5564745/app-in-hand_900.jpg" width="800" height="600" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload163.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/5564745/app-in-hand_o.jpg" data-mid="29996727"  border="0" align="left"/>

Lin'guage optimizes learning for busy people who may have moved countries to study, work, vacation or other.

Through innovative, short, and locally relevant daily challenges to learners, lin'guage strives to push learners into meaningful interactions in the target language with locals. It also leverages tried and true pedagogical methodology and the unique qualities of each language to serve a personalized learning experience.

48 hour project. The UID Cookie Box gives you a cookie when you tweet to it. That's all it does.

That's just delightful. -Bill Buxton, Microsoft Interaction Guru
It was born out of a two-day project in collaboration with Tellart. A second iteration was then produced during the following week.

We made sure it is:
-Delicious
-Socially engaging
-Cubical

It is based off the following design constraints:
-Connect something to the internet.
-Allow users to leave with something tangible.

The UID Cookie Box currently stands at the entrance of the Umeå Institute of Design and feeds cookies to passerbys who tweet to it.

The premise is simple: when at the box, send a tweet to a specific hashtag, get a cookie.
But we don't have infinite cookies! That's right. Users can only request cookies every 5 minutes. Otherwise they are met with a flashing red light from the box.

<img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5403_900.jpg" width="800" height="533" width_o="800" height_o="533" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5403_o.jpg" data-mid="22662614"  border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5406_900.jpg" width="800" height="533" width_o="800" height_o="533" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5406_o.jpg" data-mid="22662616"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5455_900.jpg" width="800" height="533" width_o="800" height_o="533" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/4293443/_MG_5455_o.jpg" data-mid="22662777"  border="0" align="left"/>
In order to prevent cookies from falling to the floor, we also installed a light-gate at the mouth of the box that prevents more cookies getting pushed out if one is already present.

The cookie box works with a node.js server/client reading from the Twitter streamin API and a Firmata-loaded Arduino. All the code used for this project is available on my Github.

This project was fulfilled by having the Interaction Design students take turns at addressing various forms of media and portraying, in turn, four other students.
The media are:
Written portrait (history)
Documentary photograph (moment in time)
Poster design (perspective of an individual over time)
Motion graphic (real time)
For further information about the process, a mini-site dedicated to this project is available .

Below is an excerpt of the text I wrote about Linus Persson
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/linusText_900.png" width="800" height="359" width_o="800" height_o="359" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/linusText_o.png" data-mid="8397715"  border="0" align="left"/>

I chose this photo of Harry Clayton Cook because it shows his capacity for personal growth and willingness to start anew.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/clayton_photo_800_900.jpg" width="800" height="534" width_o="800" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/clayton_photo_800_o.jpg" data-mid="8397781"  border="0" align="left"/>

This is the poster I made about Miguel Peres. I made it to show the complexity of Miguel as an individual. The graphics represent this.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/miguel_poster_800_900.jpg" width="800" height="1131" width_o="800" height_o="1131" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1707770/miguel_poster_800_o.jpg" data-mid="8399109" border="0" align="left"/>

This auto-poetic motion graphic about Lynn Bui is highly inspired by the previous pieces of graphics that were created about her.

The XAone graphical design proposal is part of a collaborative project between FixturLaser AB and Semcon.
The product at hand is the XAPro industrial shaft alignment tool. The task consisted of using User-Centered Design in order to redesign the graphical user interface of the XAPro device as well as the interaction flow. The research phase was conducted as a group and individual design proposals were thereafter submitted individually.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/research_900.jpg" width="800" height="400" width_o="800" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/research_o.jpg" data-mid="8376580" border="0" align="left"/>

We gathered insights from a number users of the product. It was important that we had people who already knew how to use the product as well as some who had never before seen it.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/watchingUsers_900.jpg" width="800" height="500" width_o="800" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/watchingUsers_o.jpg" data-mid="8378769" border="0" align="left"/>

Several ideas were laid out based on the insights and workflows that we generated. Defining the target users helped very much in refining the results of this step.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/designProcess_900.jpg" width="800" height="520" width_o="800" height_o="520" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/designProcess_o.jpg" data-mid="8380176" border="0" align="left"/>

The final proposal was in the form of an iPad application. It was a good form factor considering the target users and improvements we wanted to bring to the platform. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/finalProposal_900.jpg" width="800" height="523" width_o="800" height_o="523" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1698617/finalProposal_o.jpg" data-mid="8381343" border="0" align="left"/>
Here is a short video showing how the proposal could look in action.

ALAM is a design concept for an alarm clock and a collaboration between the Masters of Interaction Design and Masters of Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design, Sweden. The brief was to redesign an everyday object with added focus on the sound and light aspects of product design. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1693797/Alam_Presentation_final.pdf-pages.9_900.jpg" width="800" height="470" width_o="800" height_o="470" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1693797/Alam_Presentation_final.pdf-pages.9_o.jpg" data-mid="8321300" border="0" align="left"/>
Two wakeup themes were designed as a proof-of-concept as to what users would be woken to.
Beach Sea Theme by Alexis Morin Symphony Theme by Alexis Morin

Using some footage of team members as actors, we put together a short video on how ALAM can be beneficial to a user's sleep.

A physical model was constructed from milled high-density foam, vacuum formed polyeurethane, 3D printed bezels and laser-cut decal templates. It uses an Arduino board and 6 LEDs to simulate what the actual product would look like if it were working.

service design, people, rehabilitation, ethnography

The premise of this project was to envision ways of improving existing neuro-rehabilitation as a service. This design aims to help patients take control of themselves with the aid of seamlessly integrated technology.

The research phase was lead using ethnographic techniques at two rehabilitation centres. Many interviews were conducted as well as co-creation workshops.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/research_cocreation_900.jpg" width="800" height="600" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/research_cocreation_o.jpg" data-mid="8307583" border="0" align="left"/>

Once we felt we knew enough about rehabilitation, we set out to represent the rehab process in a simple way. This was followed by several idea-generating workshops.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/ideation_900.jpg" width="800" height="375" width_o="800" height_o="375" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/ideation_o.jpg" data-mid="8307585"  border="0" align="left"/>

It was important for us to create a brand associated with the service as to create a stronger link for patients between the various rehabilitation channels.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/branding_900.png" width="800" height="500" width_o="800" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/branding_o.png" data-mid="8315518" border="0" align="left"/>

In order to truly bring the service to life, a short film was shot using storytelling techniques. We also built physical mock-ups to give viewers a better idea of what some aspects of the service could look like.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/video_900.jpg" width="800" height="475" width_o="800" height_o="475" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/125647/1643861/video_o.jpg" data-mid="8316601" border="0" align="left"/>

Watch this video to better understand how Känna works.

Here is a video created telling the story of a patient using the service.

In August 2011, Känna was chosen as a special mention as a part of the Mindtrek 2011 design challenge. The full press release is available here.

You are most welcome to read the full Känna report and view the service blueprint and map.
