		<description>I have a strong passion about creating typefaces, and typography. Throughout my work I like to manipulate type and make it somewhat unique.

Body

Typeface created as part of my D&#38;AD Body Shop packaging entry.

The idea was to create a modern, sleak, and organic typeface, which reflected the Body Shop brand

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/BodyShopType_500.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="353" width_o="1191" height_o="842" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/BodyShopType_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Diamond Sans

As part of my honours year journey, I wanted to create a typeface which was a remix of an existing typeface. The initial typefaces started as Gill Sans. As an exercise the characters were experimented with and shapes were introduced within the typeface, starting off with circles, squares and finally diamonds. Experimentation with the shapes and structures of each individual character occurred, building up several different variables of each letter.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/GillDiamond5_500.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="353" width_o="1191" height_o="842" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/GillDiamond5_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Wonderland

The concept behind the typeface was to complement the simple structure of the book as well as retaining a magazine quality. Much of the inspiration came from Dazed &#38; Confused as they have interesting title type, which differs from issue to issue.

A basic letter set was created and then experimented with in simple grid form, keeping each letters with the same dimensions, except ones such as M and W. With an initial set of letters constructed, features were added on certain letters and experimented with to give the typeface an interested quality, which can be seen in the S and K.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/Magazine4_500.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="353" width_o="1191" height_o="842" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/Magazine4_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/Magazine6_500.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="353" width_o="1191" height_o="842" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/Magazine6_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

UniStenc

For my reverse graffiti project, a stencil typeface was required. If all the sections of the characters joined together, the counter of characters would fall out when the stencil was created. Because of the nature of the project, the typeface needed to feel very chunky and modern, so that the message seemed contemporary and stood out.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/stencil1_500.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="353" width_o="1191" height_o="842" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/73252/1260335/stencil1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Relic

The concept for this typeface was also to create a typeface which was somewhat unique. This was acheived by stripping back the alphabet so that individual letters didn’t retain the characters they were meant to have, giving an abstract feel to them. This exercise was inspired by the Runic alphabet, and tests and experimentations began to emerge from simplifying the letterforms.

This created a typeface, which is somewhat unique, compared to the shapes of the tradition alphabet and at the same time is also readable and sits together as a full set. The final typeface looks very different when each character is separated, but still reads together as a whole typeface.

		<description>As part of my Honours project we had to create work for external markers to come in and have a feel for what we were doing, and to allow people around our building to have a small preview of our ideas of what our degree show will showcase.

My main self initiated brief is:

“My honours project will be focussing on the theme of ‘Is Sameness Overrated?’, inspired by past work of Stefan Saigmeister. Through exploring this theme I will look at different ideas which work within this theme. Through research and development, I will look at different mediums and formats which would allow me to portray my findings and my final work. I will be looking at work which is both ‘same’ as well as ‘different’, and looking into design history and what has come before, and what may come in the future. I will also look at different artists who have also identified this theme, and their work they have produced.”

The idea behind the peice was to mix the Sameness, grid structure, 1m x 1m scale, and push pins, with difference, rough textured board and imperfect push pins.

It also allowed me to push myself away from the sameness of approach that I would normally do, of something printed

(and if anyone is curious, there’s just short of 4000 push pins)
