Thu Thiem, or District 2, is an area of HCMC. When you google 'Thu Thiem' you get images of the new development that is happening in this part of the city:

As in almost all stories of redevelopment, there's a back-story.

Houses being torn down, land being cleared, families having to move out of the area to make space for newly developed properties. 

The following images aim to tell this back-story, looking at a family who's been living in the same house for more than a 100 years. They have almost no neighbours left, just rubble and empty spaces around them. This is their story:

		<description>For me, photography is as much about the process as it is about the end product. I'm very curious, and I've found that with a camera in hand I get access to people's lives and their homes. And people trust me.

In 2010 I did a project where I photographed performance artists in their homes;   The Artist's Body . 
I invaded their very personal and private spaces.

Now I am exploring the opposite vulnerability and inviting people into my home. Young Hearts is my newest project in connection with the CJSA : Cape Jewish Seniors Association. I'm documenting the stories of these seniors by inviting them to my house, helping them up the stairs, sitting with them in my lounge, and finally, I open up my studio, which happens to be my bedroom, and take their portraits in a space that's very intimate to me. I use pure natural light, and no digital manipulation. Like the process, I aim for images that are raw, honest and vulnerable.

Freda was born to a Lithuanian mother and a Latvian father who met as orphans in Johannesburg. She met Marian about 4 years ago, and now they’re engaged. He was born in Romania, and came to South Africa in 1967. ‘My life significantly changed when I was 19,’ says Freda. ‘I had a brother who was mentally ill, and he tried to strangle me. I realised that life could change at any given moment, and decided not to miss out on anything.’ Consequently Freda seized every opportunity, and in 2001, she belonged to a total of 67 different clubs and groups. In 2001 the Tygertalk published an article on her: ‘She has won a prize for eating 40 bananas in 10 minutes, and also for dancing on a very small table. But that was in her hey-day.’ Now Freda still spends her time attending different groups and meetings, and she will soon be playing the role of a sangoma in a theatre production in Goodwood. She is fluent in French, Hebrew, Afrikaans and Yiddish. Marian loves Freda, and when he is not kosher-stamping meat at an abatoir in Malmesbury, he loves to spend his time with Freda.

		<description>Meet the family Haberland. 

They live in Neukölln, Berlin, and I met them in when I went to a Jazz concert in their living room. 

A family who share their house with others, open their living room to jazz concerts and film screenings and  have an indoor swing for play-times. Their genuine hospitality and desire to live creatively in community interested me, so I asked if I can take some family portraits of them.

		<description>This project is part of a series looking at identity. The inspiration comes from a very well-known essay written by Octavio Paz, Máscaras Mexicanas. Here follows an extract from this essay:

The gesticulator resorts to a mask, and the rest of us wish to pass unnoticed. In either case we hide our true selves, and sometimes deny them. I remember the afternoon I heard a noise in the room next to mine, and asked loudly: 'Who is in there?' I was answered by the voice of a servant who had recently come to us from her village: 'No one, señor. It's me.'

This project was taken on the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico, and was a creative and performative exercise where I asked people to pose with this mask. Surprisingly a lot of them said yes, while others insisted on a picture without the mask. Here's the results:

		<description>Our streets are home to some of the most interesting and beautiful things. We often walk these familiar streets, unaware of what passes us by. 

I spent 4 days shooting in one street in Guadalajara, Mexico; to capture the essence of this street, the people, the happenings and objects that enter and escape our visual memories.

		<description>The colourful decorations, old chairs and interesting characters I find in these barber shops fascinate me.

These barber shops are liminal spaces. They stand between the public and the private. They host moments of intimacy and privacy, in a public space, but within the limits of the shops it is totally acceptable.

This is a series on los peluquerías, the mexican barber shops; showing how the subjects relate to their personal environment, focusing on the intimate moments you find between strangers.
