The face is a mirror to our intimate being. The face is an entrance to personal stories.’ To this young artist, every wrinkle tells a story and has profound significance. ‘In precisely that significance lies the beauty of age’ according to Adele. ‘We live in a society in which we have become somewhat fearful of old age, we hide our elderly instead of embracing them with the knowledge that they gathered during their lives. I propose a different point of view. “When an old man dies, a library burns down” (African saying). The paintings preserve the happy balance between a lively and a lifeless state. Adele captures a distinct moment from the daily routine and extracts it from its normal context, showing it as an abnormality. Like poetry does, almost. Usage of light is very important in Adele’s work, hence the distinct presence of it. It opens up the painting as well as our imagination. The fading light connects with the subject as if they are bound to each other: light, life and time merge as a natural co-existence. And ultimately, there is the theme of age itself. The faces fades in the light, as does life into nothingness.
