		<description>Proposal
Using a given list of 125 typefaces, create a taxonomical specimen book. Include a cover page, introduction, a brief description of each category and letters which exemplify it.

Response
I chose the taxonomy of weather forecasts. In a sense, typefaces are to a piece of design what weather forecasts are to a day. They change everything – how you feel, how you look at it, your attitude toward it, etc. Also the play on words “typecast” was too good to pass up.

		<description>Proposal
Using a given text, create four layouts which display the text in a hierarchical manner, i.e. make apparent the order in which the information should be read apparent. With each layout, add more variation in type size, color and variation of typeface. Minimal images may be used in final layout.

Response
By using shapes and colors as backdrops, the text becomes more or less important. I played with that idea. Obviously, the choice of typeface became increasingly important, as some call more attention to themselves than others.

<description>Proposal From a list of “action words” choose ones which speak to you. Display the word in it’s described action, while maintaining legibility and clarity. Use only black &#38; white.

Response The word “fragmentation” shown with pieces fragmenting off as though suddenly, in suspension. This was a revision of a similarly styled previous piece, per the request of my professor. As usual, she was right.

<description>Proposal From a list of “action words” choose ones which speak to you. Display the word in it’s described action, while maintaining legibility and clarity. Use only black &#38; white.

Response The word “division”, shown dividing into smaller parts. I was thinking of division in a microbiological sense. However, my professor felt this style was more suitable to the word “fragmentation.” See next for the revision.

		<description>Proposal
Using a given text, create 5 different layouts, using a single typesize, typeface and black &#38; white only. With each layout, allow the type to become more experimental and less legible.

Response
Using a text on Johannes Gutenberg, I looked at the ways in which square columns increase legibility for readers, while more unexpected shaped blocks of text will be seen as an “image” and not something to be read.
