I guess, subconsciously I have always been interesting in film making since childhood. There wasn’t much to do as a kid, besides going off with my friends on a bike adventure into the wilderness. Back in the day, our local theatre used to play one movie a night, and it would be months before we got a new release. If I was lucky, my dad would sneak me in to a film I was way too young to see.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/me2test_7.jpg" border="0" width="300" height="444" width_o="300" height_o="444" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/me2test_7_o.jpg" align="left" />
After studying Media Production at university, and getting absolutely nowhere career-wise, I decided to go directly to the source of movie making. I enrolled on a film maker’s workshop in Los Angeles (NYFA, Universal Studios).

I learned more in the three months there, than the whole three years at Uni. Much more! I had a 16mm film camera in my hands every day. I think it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

After my stint in LaLaLand, I breezed into an job working as a Final Cut Pro editor. I didn't even know what fcp was, but because of my previous experience, lucky I found it easy to adapt, self taught myself on the job! Urk!

Due to the small scale of the operation I was working at, there was no chance of moving up the chain, or any operation to learn more, or work with big-time professionals.

I felt like I was wasting my time working for such a small company for peanuts. If I was working in London, I sure it would have been a different story. There always room for opportunity in the big smoke.

But as the case would have it, I was giving over the best years of my twenties, and burning the candle at both ends working for someone else who had little interest in encouraging my growth beyond edit-monkey. I literally had no time to do any of my own projects.

I grew tired of editing other people’s projects, most of them a far cry from ‘professional’ standards. I felt I needed to make a film and get the ball rolling on my career, instead of building someone else's pyramid. I wasn't even getting paid regularly. What was I thinking?!

As luck would have it, I secured a commission for a one minute short, funded by NFM (Northern Film and Media). “5 Bricks High”. The 1st and last commission I ever received.

On completion, ‘Northern Film and Media’ showcased it on their website ...and that was the end of that! The film was filed away at the bottom of a drawer.

About 6 months later, my dad called me up and told me about the BAFTA 60 Seconds of Fame Awards. The theme was 'UNITE' - I'll be honest my film was nothing to do with 'unite', but I thought, “What the heck, I’ve got nothing to lose, if it comes up I'll say the kids are 'united' in play”.

A few forum people tried to kick up a stink saying it wasn't anything to do with 'unite'. As long as people got to see my film, I didn't care. - It was interesting to see how many complete strangers *cough* defended my film from all the mystery naysayers

Before I knew it, my film was making the waves:

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/awards_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="79" width_o="1024" height_o="136" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/awards_o.jpg" align="left" />
The Virgin Media Awards was a considerable achievement for me. Because of that, my film was in the cinema in over 212+ cinemas across the UK for a year.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/vmsa_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="412" width_o="640" height_o="440" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/vmsa_o.jpg" align="left" />

I made '5 Bricks High' on my own (more or less), with the help of only few good friends to support me. I still have little experience in a large crew, which makes me feel like a bit of a glorified armchair critic. I’m still desperately trying to carve a name out as a director, and I have a bunch of new ideas for shorts. But it’s hard to do on your own, especially in the oppressive neighbourhood I'm currently stuck in.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/oli_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="274" width_o="640" height_o="293" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/775145/oli_o.jpg" align="left" />
In 2011 I’m going to try and move back to London (or another large city) and get my career back on track. London has always been the big elephant in the room. Hopefully by the time I get there, I’ll be armed to the teeth with more films and much needed experience… So stay Tuned!”

A Rock & a Hard Place (2002)

Writer | Director | Editor | Camera: Steve Brunton

Inspired, in part, by the photographs of Clement Cooper:
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/Presence_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="401" width_o="2048" height_o="1369" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/Presence_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/presence2_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="404" width_o="2048" height_o="1380" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/presence2_o.jpg" align="left" /> My NYFA end or term project
(Brief background): I had more problems with this shoot than I care to mention. We used very dodgy WW2 16mm film cameras with poor focus. We was told, "The eye is stupid, don't trust it", so we had to measure the eye line with tape etc. But the long shots were disappointingly blurry. I killed myself drafting out the lighting plans too!
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/R-H lighing map_600.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="449" width_o="2048" height_o="1535" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/65231/772887/R-H lighing map_o.jpg" align="left" />
Also, I couldn't afford full negative film, so I used the same stock that we were taught with (B&W reversal film), which developed as a positive reel, which we would then cut (using the original).

I was also told to under expose the film by 2-stops, to compensate for the development process... needless to say, the film came out 2-stops underexposed, ARGH! But besides that, I was quite happy with the outcome :)

NESTA: Simon Warner (2005)

Simon Warner:
"My NESTA Fellowship ran from 2006 - 2008. This was a research project investigating links between early photography, popular visual culture and the history of ideas, and equipping me to present my findings in a variety of ways.

At the heart of the research was a desire to link up the different manifestations of early mass visual culture: peep show, panorama, diorama, magic lantern, silhouette and photograph that can claim a common origin in scenography and that all press towards the eventual discovery of cinema."
