Remastering the Landscape - A Portfolio of Five Screenprints

A portfolio which draws upon the Holland shipping industry as a source. The artist completed over 80 drawings on a trip to Holland based upon visual information in the Dutch Landscape. The screenprints have the seductive intimacy of a pencil drawing with the unique layering and color of silkscreen. Each print is printed on Fabriano Hot Press Watercolor paper, 280lb., slightly warm off white.

K-9 A Portfolio of Nine Screenprints

The project takes 9 classic table and chair designs by Van der Rohe, Saarinen, and Platner as a point of departure. In this elegant portfolio of 9 prints, Ingram explores line and movement with seemingly effortless lines based upon these classic designs, which are still in production at Knoll.

Firsthand created a custom method of printing graphite through the screen to give these prints a delicacy equal a pencil drawing. Each piece in the portfolio is printed on a hand-torn lightweight paper, which has a slight greenish translucency that gives the graphite lines a shimmer and sheen. Portfolio will include 9 images and colophon detailing the creative process and artist's statement.

Friend to Sea and Soil is a book equating cartography and imagination. It was an experiment that yielded a variety of images that, at first, had no connection.

I am a doodler by nature. Give me a ball point pen, a piece of paper and I'm satisfied. I'll just start with a line and then add another. Paul Klee's famous quote about taking a line for a walk may be the best thing ever said about intuitive drawing. It was certainly a quote that was on my mind while I worked on this book, which includes 36 plates of my drawings and watercolors along with an essay about the concept.

From 2001 - 2009, I was the director of Flying Horse Editions, a nonprofit publisher of limited-edition prints, artist books, and art objects by internationally renowned artists. FHE is located in the University of Central Florida's Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando. FHE offers unique opportunities for artists, students, faculty, and collector-patrons.

During my time as director, the press published a variety of artists working in a range of styles. Over time, the quality of the publications and value of interacting with the artists cemented support from FHE collectors. This enabled a capital campaign that funded the building of a new production studio and gallery.

Below is a sampling of publications over that period.

When I receive a postcard that's hand addressed to me I still feel...well, special. As a reminder, something to stick on the fridge and not forget about, postcards are invaluable.

These five postcards are set to be released in Feb 2010. The are meant to be handed out at local and regional events as a reminder that the everyone is a part of the Portrait of America that is the census.

These two are for member exclusive events at the press. Only members received them and once I started sending them attendance skyrocketed.

A separate body of work that sprung from a dream I had about stacking rocks and began with this initial charcoal drawing. This work was an exploration of movement, gesture and implied form.

Eventually, it grew to include an exploration of color and line, and a mechanism to explore landscape in a non-traditional format.

Al Souza works with materials you cannot buy at the art supply store. He uses puzzles, newspapers, and other mass produced commercially printed materials to create densely layered abstract paintings. I love Al's concepts and his approach; He has a knack for making the plebeian magical.

When we initially talked about making a publication together he said, "I don't know about a print; I don't really draw or paint." I told him we had been running experiments with a laser cutter, trying to make plates and woodblocks with it. He had an idea for that.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/246009/IMG_5211.jpg" width="500" height="333" width_o="500" height_o="333" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/246009/IMG_5211_o.jpg" data-mid="1049726" border="0" align="left"/>

This piece has seven layers of maps featuring different views of Orlando, FL. Each layer has ovals cut into it. Al cut the ovals by hand into a mock up and I scanned each layer with his cut into the computer. Illustrator vector files were created from these scans. It was important that the ovals reflect the handmade nature of Al's work, so I spent a lot of time making sure the bumps, irregularities, and warbles he cut were in the edition we created. Once these Adobe Illustrator files were created, I used the laser cutter to burn each page in the edition of 55.

Not quite a book, not quite a print - This piece is a hybrid of the handmade married with technology.

In February 2010, I was invited to P.R.I.N.T. - The Print Institute of North Texas to collaborate with artist Jiha Moon on an edition of prints.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/504914/20232_10150096371710002_90900575001_11061778_1869638_n.jpg" width="670" height="670" width_o="720" height_o="720" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/504914/20232_10150096371710002_90900575001_11061778_1869638_n_o.jpg" data-mid="2301293" border="0" align="left"/>

Jiha and I had collaborated before on some prints (see below) and that previous experience allowed us to hit the ground running. Using art historical references taken from Asian art and Western art and blending them is something Jiha is especially deft at doing. She has an amazing ability at rendering form with line and watcher her paint with a lining brush is a true pleasure.

As a master printer, my role was to oversee the production of the edition, which was facilitated by P.R.I.N.T. director Rachel Biggerstaff, Associate Professor Andrew Decaen and the very hard working students currently enrolled as graduate students at the University of N. Texas.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/504914/20232_10150096315005002_90900575001_11061285_1992884_n.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="720" height_o="478" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/21105/504914/20232_10150096315005002_90900575001_11061285_1992884_n_o.jpg" data-mid="2301297" border="0" align="left"/>

After completing the screenprinting component of the edition, which was four colors, Jiha hand painted pac-men and butterflies, which were then cut out and applied to each print in the edition. The printing went so smoothly we had the time to print an alternate edition using a different color scheme.

The following prints were screenprints of completed at FHE, Day for Night and Lichtenstein's Peaches. These two prints also used the Chine Collé technique, only instead of smaller elements, each central shape based upon traditional Korean fans was printed on a Asian paper then adhered to the larger sheet of Western paper (Arches). Conceptually, I love the way the materials 'support' the imagery, which also blends Eastern and Western into a hybrid landscape of swirling iconography, symbols and linear playfulness.

Some images from the period between 1998 - 2000.
My art at the time was greatly influenced by Sigmar Polke, who just recently passed away. His exhibition of drawings at MoMA during the summer of 1999 left an indelible impression on me. It also provided me a way to think differently about using my own collection of 'stock imagery' by placing them in service to my own metaphors and concerns.

Some of these images were selected to appear in New American Paintings (No. 36).

After moving to Charlotte in the fall of 2009, I began a series of works, small in scale and quickly executed. People often see animals, amoebas, landscapes, spiders, and fauna in these works. My intention was never to create a recognizable image so much as to explore gesture, line, color and my own spontaneous choices.

People have also described them as whimsical, playful, and musical. Those descriptions are very pleasing to me because I feel similarly. I also think of them as mysterious, unknowable but familiar; and unpredictable. That's how they feel when I make them. .

All works Untitled - watercolor, India ink, acrylic, colored pencil, and oil paint. All images are 16x20 inches or smaller.

The discipline of restricting yourself to certain perimeters, whether it is scale or media, words or approach is a valuable discipline. It can lead you places that you didn't anticipate.
