Zwaan Pintmedia kalender 2012: Natuurlijk inspirerend.

		<description>J.H. Moesman

The Utrecht surrealist J.H. Moesman (1909-1988) is not only known for a small, high-quality catalog of paintings, drawings and essays on modern art, he also made a self-designed font: the Petronius.

Moesman, who was also a gifted calligrapher, liked written letters more than printed letters. The Petronius has the look of a calligraphic letter. For the design of Petronius - the name is a tribute to Gaius Petronius Arbiter, a Roman author who lived in the 1st century AD and to whom the picaresque novel Satyricon is  attributed - Moesman studied The Golden type of William Morris (1834-1896) . Morris based his letter on a printed Renaissance letter by the of Italian Nicolas Jenson (ca.1420-1480). For the Petronius Moesman made a roman, italic, and a narrow one and a set of initials.

The Petronius has said, according to recently emerged information from printer and typographer Bavo van Rossum, never to been put into production, and therefore a lead type was never made. Those who go to antiquarian bookshops can find a type specimen: the book "On angel feet" from 1975, in very limited editions published by Brumes Blondes. Publisher Laurens van Krevelen was not only kind to lend us a mint copy of the booklet available, but also to bring us into contact with the heirs Moesman and arrange an exclusive license for use of the letter by the Utrecht Poet Guild (UPG). From that moment it went fast: the type specimen was scanned at high quality by a specialist of the Utrecht University.

Autobahn has currently finished the digitization of the Roman Petronius to a font that can be ued on any computer. But it was a difficult process. We faced the problem that even the highest-quality scan of the type specimen 'On angel feet "still leaves too much room for interpretation, because the typespecimen is printed on open structured paper. There are now five copies of the typespecimen in our possesion. We layed the scans over each other so we got the most accurate interpretation of the letterform. And even this was too much guessing. But luckily there was a cleaner version of the type specimen provided by Bavo van Rossum. Digitizing is therefore comes largely down to restoring the typeface.

This special approach to the project was noticed by Dutch television makers at the NPS and they already came to film Autobahn for an item in the new cultural program of Dutch poet Abdelkader Benali. The program aires in the spring of 2010.

The purpose

Ultimately, our desire is to return to the Petronius to the public domein. This could be done through a reprint in facsimile of the original type specimen, followed by a new type specimen with new poems from the Utrecht Poets Guild typeset in the new Petronius. Also, a brief history of the letter should be written with contributions from all those who played a role in the history of the letter, such as Bavo van Rossum, Laurens van Krevelen and perhaps daughter Remke Moesman. For this publication, should appear sometime in 2010, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and the Meermanno Museum in The Hague will be approached with the question to organize an exposition on Moesman and his love for calligraphy and typefaces.

Rescently the city poet of Utrecht, Ingmar Heytze, presented the 'terms of office poem' to the Utrecht city council. This poem is the first publication in the new Petronius.

Purcase

The Petronius will become available for purchase in a short while. More information is avaliable at the Autobahn website www.autobahn.nl.

<description>From early November to late December 2009 Ship of Fools Gallery (den Haag) organized the typographic exhibition Don't Believe The Type.

Ship of Fools invited 44 Flavors, Alina Günter, Trochut Alex, Alex Purdy, Andy Rementer, Chris Piascik, Daan Knirim, Hansje for Halem, Janno Hahn, Job Wouters, Jonathan Looman, Lennard Schuurmans, Luca Barcellona, Marta Cerdà Alimbau, Martijn Sandberg , Michiel Schuurman, Mieke Gerritzen, Pedro Vilas-Boas, Rogier Wieland, Nice Stay, Trapped in Suburbia, Underware, Yomar Augusto and Autobahn to vissually respond to the title Do not Believe The Type..

Autobahn made a series of ambigrams. An ambigram is an word or image that - if you read it upside down - another (or sometimes the same) word or image shows. So, you can design something to say one thing, while simultaneously the opposite is also communicated: Do not Believe The Type.

In collaboration with (former trainee) Vincent de Boer we created three ambigrams:
Love / Hate
Friends / Enemy
Digital / Analog

The prints are available for purchase at the Autobahn Shop.

<description>Den Helder (NL) 1867, an old Frisian manuscript saw daylight again after almost 4000 years. It was a handwritten copy of a much older document that according to a preface dated from 1256 AD. It tells the story from the beginning of the world and the sinking of Atlantis, to the arrival of the Romans in the Netherlands.

Cornelis over de Linden (1811-1874), a ship carpenter boss on the national naval shipyard in Den Helder, brought out a manuscript that soon was to be entitled “Thet Oera Linda Bok”. The book was kept for years in his family, according to Cornelis over de Linden. The book tells of a long tradition within the family “Oera Linda” or “Ovira Linda” or Over de Linden. The current original manuscript is copied on paper by Hiddo oera Linda in the year 1256 AD. He did this because the book had become wet by a huge flood and threatened to wreck the book. Cornelis over de Linden could not read the strange script and wanted to have it translated.

Translator Ottema was convinced of the authenticity of the manuscript. According to him it was an ancient chronicle, written in an unknown writing of runes, a language that may be purer than the oldest known Fries. He discovered that not the Greeks, the Romans or the Phoenicians, but the Frisians founded the Western civilization. The manuscript told about a strange primal Friese civilization, more than 4000 years old, which was based on the almost modern, democratic ideals of freedom and equality.

In 1876 philologist J. Beckering Vinckers did a linguistic analysis and revealed the falseness of the Oera Linda book. The language is “a ridiculous anachronism [...] the whole Oera Linda book from beginning to end just a huge anomaly”.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I have re-designed the unique handwritten letterfroms used in the Oera Linda book and I'm now in the process of making a 'stamp-set' from limewood (Lindenhout). The letters are lasercut from 3mm limewood and affixed to 40 x 40 mm limewood blocks. All letterblocks are then gathered in a box.

The publication about this font, its history and the stamp-set.
