Posters and type explorations

ClientPersonal Projects

RoleConcept and Design
This is a selection of some personal posters I've been working on lately. Most of the time they are just an excuse to have some fun and make some (hopefully) cool stuff while exploring different techniques and styles.

In tipo veritas . I - That's rope

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/poster_small_970.jpg" width="890" height="1168" width_o="890" height_o="1168" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/poster_small_o.jpg" data-mid="26239668"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/poster_detail_970.jpg" width="890" height="489" width_o="890" height_o="489" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/poster_detail_o.jpg" data-mid="26239679"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
This is the first execution of a broader project that will evolve in the first few months of 2013 (promised). The project is called 'In typo veritas', and it plays with typos and miscommunications that happened to me since I moved to Amsterdam. For someone that is not a native English speaking, sounds and expressions sometimes comes not that clear, especially when they are new. So what an expat can do, it's just to fill the communication gaps with some imagination and irony... and whatever happens, always nod and smile. Most of the time the result is pretty funny, so I wanted to celebrate these little mistakes giving them a new meaning through the type treatment.
'That's rope' comes of course from the expression 'That's dope!'... Kinda rope, isn't it?

Not to scale

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/nottoscale_890_970.jpg" width="890" height="1134" width_o="890" height_o="1134" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/nottoscale_890_o.jpg" data-mid="25935413"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/nottoscale_detail_970.jpg" width="890" height="570" width_o="890" height_o="570" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/nottoscale_detail_o.jpg" data-mid="25935621"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Not to Scale worked as a cover for a portfolio of an architect at the beginning of her career. The line was a statement and an invite to look at the contents of the book not in terms of experience, rather in terms of ambition, visions and dreams, as the latters were much bigger and important.

A/R Photo exhibit poster

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/A3_970.jpg" width="890" height="1260" width_o="890" height_o="1260" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/A3_o.jpg" data-mid="25948383"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/detail_970.jpg" width="890" height="578" width_o="890" height_o="578" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/detail_o.jpg" data-mid="25948384"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
A/R is the title of a photographic exposition that took place in Italy. A/R is the italian for 'round-trip', where A is for 'Andata', literally going, and R for 'Ritorno', the flight back. The symmetry of the lockup reflects the comparison between USA and Italy the photographer was exploring with his work.

The 5 steps plan

&#60;img src="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/Immagine 2.png" width="639" height="897" width_o="639" height_o="897" src_o="http://payload127.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4852856/Immagine 2_o.png" data-mid="25950931"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

If I'm not wrong this came from a Seth Godin's quote. It was inspiring, hence it deserved a type treatment! I did it few years ago actually, but its content still sounds as a commitment. </description>

One Win Leads to Another

ClientWomen Win

AgencyThe Kennedys
W+K Amsterdam

RoleConcept / Art Direction / Digital Design
Women Win is a nonprofit organisation that funds sports programmes for women and girls in developing countries. It's a simple idea, but an effective one. Sport provides a safe space for girls, gives them confidence, community, mentorship.
It's a cause everyone can get behind, but Women Win were struggling to translate their method and mission into words anyone can understand.

Our Task
Women Win is a W+K's pro-bono client. As part of the Kennedys team, we have been asked to help them to increase awareness of their cause.

In order to achieve our goal, we developed a whole integrated campaign together with a communication toolkit there to be downloaded by whoever desires to support WW even further.

One Win leads to another
Our solution was One Win Leads to Another, a campaign that raises awareness of Women Win while providing people with the tools they need to meaningfully express solidarity.

&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4676377/sign_9_970.jpg" width="890" height="434" width_o="890" height_o="434" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4676377/sign_9_o.jpg" data-mid="25850745"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

At first we introduced a sign, that could work both as a logo and as hand signal to stand for the cause and declare solidarity.

Then we spread this sign through the Chain of Wins, a Facebook application that allows users to join photos of themselves doing the Women Win hand sign with others, to form a chain of solidarity.

Two videos explaining the Women Win philosophy were available together with other comms assets to allow ambassadors to spread the word.

Wink for EYE

ClientEYE Film Museum Netherlands

AgencyThe Kennedys
W+K Amsterdam

RoleConcept / Digital Art Direction / Development

Eye Film Instituut Netherlands, the Dutch center for Film, culture and heritage came to us with a challenge: moving from their former home in Vondel Park to the new Amsterdam location on the IJ river, they asked us to create a campaign that could generate national awareness around the opening, fill the new logo with meaning and draw a larger film audience to their new Film Museum building.
Our idea was to use the three months blackout period, prior to the opening, to launch the 'Wink for EYE' campaign containing three different phases:
1. Make an EYEdent
2. Wink for EYE
3. EYE is Open
The campaign asked for film makers and public collaboration by starting online, and finishing with OOH Posters, Billboards, and a national TVC, directing all the people towards the museum opening.

I. Make an EYEDENT
The Campaign begun with an EYEdent web platform asking local film directors to participate by creating 20 seconds movies, celebrating Film. The Platform contained a downloadable toolkit, allowing each film maker to brand a film, while highlighting their participation with EYE. Each Film maker could then upload the film directly to EYE for curation.

&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/01_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/01_o.jpg" data-mid="24900405"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/02_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/02_o.jpg" data-mid="24900406"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/03_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/03_o.jpg" data-mid="24900408"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/04_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/04_o.jpg" data-mid="24900409"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The EYEdent invitation was followed by a countdown website, taking hover the EYE Film Instituut home page, highlighting and displaying the number of days until the opening. As the opening grew closer, several new sections were added to the site. An EYEdents video section were added, allowing users to view and share the UGFilms that had been uploaded.

 &#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/01_1_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/01_1_o.jpg" data-mid="24900456"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/02_2_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/02_2_o.jpg" data-mid="24900493"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/04_4_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/04_4_o.jpg" data-mid="24900500"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

I've developed both the front end and the back end of the websites in PHP+HTML/JAVASCRIPT

&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/eydents_970.jpg" width="890" height="507" width_o="890" height_o="507" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/eydents_o.jpg" data-mid="24900757"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
You can take a look at few of the eyedents we received here

II. Wink for EYE
Several weeks before the opening, we added the wink for EYE section asking the users to Wink to support the EYE. Using their webcam, they could upload a picture of their selves winking, which could them be shared across the several social media platforms.

&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/03_3_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/03_3_o.jpg" data-mid="24900495"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/05_970.jpg" width="890" height="534" width_o="890" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/0/30895/4673522/05_o.jpg" data-mid="24900503"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Video Invite

III. EYE is Open
Finally, hundreds of posters and billboards highlighted the opening culminating in a special 55 meters building banner next to the new building.
The logo was brought to life during the evening hours as winks and EYEdents were projected into the EYE logo for all to see.
Across the river from Amsterdam Central Station and ferry line the building banner was viewed daily by thousands of tourists and daily commuters.

From vision to brand.
Developing a coherent tone of voice and look and feel for a quite unique fashion brand.

ClientR.I.M.A.

RoleArt Director / Digital Designer / Developer

AgencyThe Kennedys
W+K Amsterdam

Revolution in Material Apparel (R.I.M.A) is a new concept in sustainable fashion created by Rima Freeman, a costume and fashion designer from Los Angeles. R.I.M.A works with vintage and deadstock garments and fabrics to create new garments with a playful, yet wearable, sensibility.

As part of the Kennedys' team, we collaborated with R.I.M.A to create a new corporate identity to introduce the brand to the fashion scene. We developed a complete set of communication assets and guidelines to give the brand the credibility it deserved.

Brand's belief

ODE TO SLOW
When was it that you took the time to let it all sink in last?
Walking to the rhythm of your own heartbeat.
Closing your eyes, breathing deeper and slowing down.
The world moves fast but do we have to follow its pace?
They say time is money, but really time is life itself.
Time spent thinking about what will be instead of what is, is time squandered.
Slowing down and giving your own self undivided attention.
Taking time to savior each instant, the way you would appreciate morning coffee.
Aimlessly wandering the streets instead of walking them.
Letting the raindrops fall on your visage.
Inhaling as if each of your breaths could be the last.
Living in the moment, being in the moment.
Slow down not to let your life pass you by.

Visual Identity
Inspired by R.I.M.A’s ethos and aesthetic, we created a visual identity for the brand consisting of a logo, brand design manual and print lookbook. We used a custom slab serif typeface and colour palette drawn from R.I.M.A’s organic, vintage, unexpected pieces.

Website
Details are what make RIMA's designs unique. To represent this idea in Rima's website, we created a series of small looped animations focused on barely perceivable yet very evocative movement of Nature.

To develop the front end and the back end I used HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPT + AJAX/PHP to manage the request to the database.

Event
We collaborated with Rima Freeman to host a showcase of her work as the concluding event of Salon/2, a fashion and design festival in Amsterdam. The showcase took place at the historic Huize Frankendael, a manor hour in the outskirts of Amsterdam.
We typed four original short stories on to 150 sheets of tracing paper and set them fluttering from the ceiling of the main hall, hung a dense forest of patterns in the carriage house, and let models wander and socialize as guests enjoyed R.I.M.A branded cupcakes.

The Real Street Fighter - Interactive Youtube Video

ClientPersonal Project

AgencyN1lab Collective

RoleConcept / Art Direction
This project started when I noticed that pressing the numbers on the keyboard while a youtube player was on play, I was able to jump form one point of the timeline to another without any relevant buffering.

After few experiments based on sort of an analogical drum machine, I came up with the idea of an Interactive Street Fighter featuring me kicking the ass of a buddy of mine. Give it a try!

PROJECT

The Interactive video went pretty viral, in fact in just one week from its release, the video counted about 90000 hits from all over the world, and it has been featured in several different blogs. No seeding has been planned for it.
It won a couple of random golds too as best use of media, being the first example of such a use of the youtube player in the universe.
