Sometimes a newspaper's two dimensional layout can make the reader feel removed and out of touch with what is actually taking place. In Lee's latest series of newspaper burnings he invites the reader into each story by capturing the emotions of those involved. Lee has actually burned an image on top of the words of a news story. Some of Lee's images relate directly to the article they are burned upon. Some images are in direct contrast of the articles they are burned upon. Either way, the viewer is invited to take a part in the story. All burnings are done free-hand using only a wood burning tool and a piece of newspaper. was sparked by the movie, “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till.” The movie documented the racism and hatred that led to the brutal murder of a 14-year old African American boy living in Mississippi during the year 1955. Till’s case along with countless other civil rights murder cases have been left unsolved. Each painting below reflects an actual murder case in which no person was ever brought to justice. The paintings are meant to represent the pain and suffering of those murdered and are intended to haunt the viewer with the burden of injustice.
