Nicola, first off we are so glad you could contribute to our project, we love your work. What first got you interested in photography?

I have always enjoyed photography and taking pictures, but it became an addiction when I found the old camera of my father four or five years ago. Since then it’s been hard to enjoy beauty without being able to immortalize it.

If you could travel to one place for a year, where would you choose to go?

This is hard because I really want to go everywhere. But if I had to stay at one place for a year it would be Canada. With it’s infinite woods, high mountains, turquoise lakes and wild rivers it offers everything I long for in nature. And still there are metropolises like Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. It just seems to be the perfect country and I want to go there so bad.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/a.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="670" height_o="446" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/a_o.jpg" data-mid="15358119" border="0" align="left"/>

Film or Digital?

I started with film, improved with digital but returned to film last summer. It just seems to be more ‘real’ when I take a picture with my analog camera than with my digital one.

What kind of camera do you shoot with?

Nikon F65 and Nikon D40.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/Te Paka Peak 033.jpg" width="670" height="445" width_o="670" height_o="445" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/Te Paka Peak 033_o.jpg" data-mid="14567125" border="0" align="left"/>

Walk us through a normal day in your life, from waking up to going to bed.

I wake up and go to a school for children with mental deficiency, where I work until summer before I’ll go to University in autumn. In the afternoon, when the weather is nice, I like to go on a cruise though the local area with my sister and take photographs. In the evening, during the week, I am either at home or go out to meet some friends.

What are 5 things you could absolutely not live without?

The people I love
My camera
My guitar
My passport
My iPod

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaa.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="670" height_o="446" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaa_o.jpg" data-mid="15358122" border="0" align="left"/>

Who are some of your favorite photographers/artists that inspire you?

I really admire the work of Jocelyn Catterson. The way she captures nature is simply outstanding!
Just as Jeff Luker, his photographs are also truly inspiring!
Besides these I admire various artists such as Ryan McGinley, Sally Mann, Nirrimi Hakanson and Neil Krug, to name just a few.
And I recently stumbled upon the work of Prashant Ashoka, his work is one of a kind!

What's your favorite food?

Wiener Schnitzel.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaaaa.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="670" height_o="446" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaaaa_o.jpg" data-mid="15358125" border="0" align="left"/>

Favorite songs/bands at the moment?

I’ve been listening non-stop to the Australian band ‘Pond’ for the last couple of weeks. ‘Allergies’ is definitely a favorite! And I love ‘Dead Deer’ by Evening Hymnes, this band is just fantastic!

Pond - Allergies

Evening Hymns- Dead Deer

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aa.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="670" height_o="446" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aa_o.jpg" data-mid="15358120" border="0" align="left"/>

Do you see photography being a possible career path for you?

No, not as a full-time job. Photography is something that I need to do in order to breathe. It makes me feel as if I’m able to stop time and that is what I try to do when I take a picture, to capture the moment. I wouldn’t want to have the thought of money in the back of my head while shooting.

What's your favorite movie?

I really love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Everything in these movies is perfect, from the music to the shooting locations. Although they play in a fantasy world, this world becomes real the minute you watch it. A movie couldn’t do better than that.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaaaaa.jpg" width="670" height="445" width_o="670" height_o="445" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2865580/aaaaaa_o.jpg" data-mid="15358127" border="0" align="left"/>

Thanks so much for taking the time to contribute to our project, any final words?

Thank you for having me included!

What first got you interested in photography?

My parents were always supplying me with disposable cameras during trips or day hikes as a kid and I always had a lot of fun with them. It's the only hobby that's really stuck I guess. Plus it's hard to find an activity that caters to your interests and lifestyle. I can hike, explore beautiful places, get stoned, learn a bit of natural history, and document it all at once. It's the best.

A few things you couldn't live without?

Weed, my dog Buster, and Dick's Drive-In Deluxe Burgers.

<img src="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/5256911561_196f2b9d39_b.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/5256911561_196f2b9d39_b_o.jpg" data-mid="15252898" border="0" align="left"/>

Do you have a dream job?

For years my dream job has been to become a Park Naturalist in a national park. That's still something I'd like to do, but really anything that involves environmental or conservation science in some way is perfect for me.

Biggest pet peeve?

People who are rude for shock value.

<img src="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/4928077908_4303a7248c_b.jpg" width="670" height="449" width_o="670" height_o="449" src_o="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/4928077908_4303a7248c_b_o.jpg" data-mid="15252897" border="0" align="left"/>

What kind of camera do you shoot with?

Usually I'll use my Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim when I'm shooting film, it's light weight and has a bit of a wide angle lens which I love. I don't use digital very often but when I do I use a Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

<img src="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/5945358366_1d9d4818ba_b.jpg" width="670" height="448" width_o="670" height_o="448" src_o="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/5945358366_1d9d4818ba_b_o.jpg" data-mid="15252900" border="0" align="left"/>

What are three of your favorite songs right now?

What artists, visually, musically, have influenced your style of photography as you grow?

Most of my inspiration and influence comes from the places I photograph, not really any artists in particular. When I was growing up however, my parents had these huge Art Wolfe books and I'd spend many nights flipping thought them. I think that's partly where my interest in nature photography came from.

We ran three red lights today, so now we are curious, what's the last law you broke?

Well, I am smoking bong bowls as I answer these questions. That's almost always my latest offense.

<img src="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/6209488439_7768c589d3_b.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload34.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2993282/6209488439_7768c589d3_b_o.jpg" data-mid="15252904" border="0" align="left"/>

If you could take a trip anywhere right now, where would you go, and why.

Glacier National Park for sure. In my opinion it's the most beautiful park in the country (sorry Rainier). The lakes and rivers are breathtakingly blue, all the mountains feature colorful strata, and though the park gets a lot of traffic during the summer, it's easy to find solitude. It's a geology nerd's ultimate fantasy.

Favorite band right now?

Smog/Bill Callahan

Rachael. we are really glad you were down to do this little interview, thanks so much. Any final words?

Safety first!

Your photo locations are amazing, we're guessing you live in Narnia, is this correct?

Thank you. I wish I lived in Narnia, but unfortunately not. I am from Slovakia. It is a small country in the heart of Europe. We do have a lot of beautiful places which I admire and visit a lot. I can always find peace, beaty and inspiration there.

Film or Digital?

I only use film. It has got an atmosphere and most importantly, the colours are original. Film is a great colorful crayon with which I draw my photographs. Digital photography can also be pretty, but it depends on the idea, the author and how he has worked the photograph itself.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/006.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="750" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/006_o.jpg" data-mid="14061777" border="0" align="left"/>

Walk us through a typical day for you.

My typical day? I go to work, or sometimes I work from home. Sometimes I cook, clean and play with my pet rabbit Maya. If I have time, I meet my friends and of course I never forget to take a lot of pictures, watch films, look at pictures, read books, listen to music. Obviously I spend a lot of time with my boyfriend too.

What are some of your favorite songs/bands at the moment?

Emmanuelle Parrenin. She is an artist – folk musician from France. She plays the hurdy-gurdy, various harps, thump piano, spinet des Vosges, dulcimer, singing bowls.
It is as a musical fairy tale.

Emmanuelle Parrenin - Voyage Migrateur

S. McLoughlin and A. Cooperwinter - Winter

Orion Rigel Dommisse - Capricorn

Susan Christie - Rainy Day

Jan & Lorraine Number 33

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/003.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="748" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/003_o.jpg" data-mid="14061759" border="0" align="left"/>

You have a photo with a real owl in it, be honest with us, did you steal that Owl from a Zoo?

Yes, they are photographs of real owls. They are not owls from Zoo but from the Falconner’s Court which is right next to the castle in a small Slovak village Červený Kameň (Red Stone in English). It is very different there to a Zoo. Even though the owls live in captivity, they have got more freedom as they can fly anywhere and they always return back as they know they get fed there.

We noticed there are a few little children that are in some of your photos, who are these little ones?

Those are my friend’s children. Little Filip (8 y. o.) and little Dianka (7 y.o.). I like taking pics of them, especially Dianka out of all the children I know. She is my little big muse. She is very nice, cute and she likes when I take pictures of her.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/013.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="750" height_o="498" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/013_o.jpg" data-mid="14061788" border="0" align="left"/>

Dream job?

Travel and photography. I would also love to publish children’s books and work with children to help them to be educated in the right way, especially in the environmental direction as they are our future.

What are three things you couldn't live without?

Family (my boyfriend falls under this category and so do my friends), camera, nature.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/004.jpg" width="670" height="449" width_o="745" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/004_o.jpg" data-mid="14061769" border="0" align="left"/>

Is the world going to end on December 21st 2012?

Let us get surprised, shall we?

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/011.jpg" width="670" height="445" width_o="750" height_o="499" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/011_o.jpg" data-mid="14061782" border="0" align="left"/>

What's your favorite movie?

I have got a lot of favorite movies. But the most recent ones that I watch was Another Year by Mike Leigh. He is a British director and he has directed a lot of movies that I like at the moment. I also like Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring by Kim Ki Duk. It is some sort of a picture poetry with a big meaning.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/023.jpg" width="670" height="448" width_o="747" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2771261/023_o.jpg" data-mid="14061797" border="0" align="left"/>

Thanks for putting up with our shenanigans. Any final words?

My big wish is for people to finally respect the earth so they deserve to live on it. I wish for them to not hurt animals for no reason or other people, for them not to violating our environment. I wish people would not be aggressive, jealous and materialistic. As Eckhart Tolle said “If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within; secondary reality without.”

Favorite song/band at the moment?

I'm really digging this band called Balmorhea from Texas.

Future Plans?

I'm getting into analog film making and want to shoot a couple short films this year. I've started bringing a 'Super 8' film camera on my adventures lately.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6120246033_fa23304c9a_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="449" width_o="800" height_o="537" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6120246033_fa23304c9a_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061317" border="0" align="left"/>

Last song you listened to, tell us about it?

Last thing I listened to was the soundtrack to the third Omen movie, composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Nice dark, suspenseful, creepy orchestral music. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but great when you're in the mood for that kind of thing.

The Omen III Soundtrack, Electric Storm
The Omen III Soundtrack, The Monastary

Who and/or what inspires you?

So many things. The awesomeness of nature. People who are true artistic or intellectual geniuses or just make the world a better place through their positive actions.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6192310043_fd3d2d1753_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="448" width_o="800" height_o="536" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6192310043_fd3d2d1753_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061327" border="0" align="left"/>

What are you doing with your life currently?

I am studying plant biology at a university in Vancouver, Canada, and having lots of adventures exploring the mountains, beaches, and forests of western North America. I also spend a lot of time learning to cook new things and reading books.

Favorite animal?

Caribou.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6204689217_ab758ba322_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="800" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6204689217_ab758ba322_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061331" border="0" align="left"/>

Do you have any complaints about the world today?

Well, I have some complaints about the world but they pretty much all boil down to contempt for the economic and social systems that are destroying the natural world and increasing human inequality and suffering.

Last movie you watched, tell us about it?

"True Grit"... about a crazy old mumbling drunk and a teenage girl who hunt bandits in the Wild West. It was kind of funny.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6222162082_afe3e1e765_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="449" width_o="800" height_o="537" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6222162082_afe3e1e765_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061334" border="0" align="left"/>

Do you see photography being a career path for you?

No, I am happy that it is just a hobby. I wouldn't want my love of taking pictures to be ruined by the compromises and pressures that would come with trying to make a career out of it.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/5952326561_0cd643c86d_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="800" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/5952326561_0cd643c86d_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061312" border="0" align="left"/>

Are you one of those people who spend hours editing photos to look just right?

I'm into the old school, film and negatives and prints.

<img src="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6604788545_884f07d57a_b_905.jpg" width="670" height="449" width_o="800" height_o="537" src_o="http://payload23.cargocollective.com/1/4/128487/2762903/6604788545_884f07d57a_b_905_o.jpg" data-mid="14061341" border="0" align="left"/>

Final words

Be excellent to each other.
